In 1896 Lahti Town was just a typical country village with about3000 inhabitants living in small wooden houses. The villagershad the idea of starting a local secondary school - an ambitiousplan at that time, but which was soon implemented attractingindustry, such as a brickworks, and employment to the village.Lahti Coeducational School has since expanded and been mod-ernised over and over again with a consistent use of copper,

and remains one of the most highly achieving senior secondaryschools in Finland.

A Lyrical Copper LibraryA new library building in Latvia makes extensive, ambitious and in-

triguing use of perforated copper technology both inside and out, in-

cluding a stunning graphic display of lyrics by the father of Latvian

    folk songs, Krisjnis Barons.

The Town o Ventspilsk in Latvia consists o two airly independent parts separated by theRiver Venta with a single bridge crossing it and the right bank is known as Parventa. Forthis reason, the town duplicates several cultural and sports acilities. Now Parventa hasits own new library with an exceptional curved aade composed o unique per oratedcopper cassettes. The Parventa library building was designed by INDIA, a Riga architec-tural o fce headed up by Ivars Kalvans and Peteris Jajars.

    Writing on the walls

Their vision sought to incorporate the heritage andtradition o Latvia into a modern design. As copperhas been used on some o the oldest churches, mu-seums and other important buildings in Europe orcenturies, the city representatives wanted copperwalls or the library. The material was ordered romLuvata Pori Oy, a Finnish company, renowned or itsskill and expertise in copper as well as its modernNordic Systems products. Individually per orated

cassettes were ideally suited to the architects ambi-tious idea o writing the lyrics o a Latvian olk songon the walls! Every cassette was separately manu-actured and unique. The biggest challenge was todesign the per oration layout to recreate the lyricsand verses o the olk song when laid correctly on topo one another.

    The librarys modern appearance

The abundant design potential o copper has been ully utilized in this thor-oughly modern building. The curved plan shape o the aade was easy toachieve thanks to the malleability o copper. The skill ul use o per orationtechnology creates a modern appearance to complement more typical uses ocopper. There are endless opportunities or creative architectural design, as

even the wildest ideas can o ten be realised with copper and Parventa libraryis a particularly exciting example.

Some 750 m 2 o 1.5mm thick copper was used on the aade. Luvata Pori Oysupplied ready-made specially per orated cassettes to the site and installedby Pilsbuve, the main contractor. Installation o the cassettes was a real chal-lenge but the combination o copper and glass creates a beauti ul result. Thetotal area o the library is 1500 m 2 on three levels. Construction began in April2008 and will be completed this summer.

The Clip House in Madrid, Spain designed by Bernalte-Len y Asociados is a highlysculptural design de ned by sinuous curving bands o copper cantilevered rom a verti-cal concrete spine and enveloping the main spaces. The design concept refects the in-ternational li e-style o its owner rather than making any response or concessions to itssuburban setting. Internal spaces or living, work and sleep fow reely, served by top-lit

    circulation within the concrete spine.

Expansive di used glazing in lls between the copper bands food the spaces with lightwhile clear glazed panels just to the narrow rontage and subdividing internal spacesallow views through. The dramatic copper bands, made up o numerous small pieces ocopper and lined internally with timber, orm a continuous skin o the house, shaping thearchitectural spaces, occasionally breaking through to the inside. They can also be seenas a graphic device - perhaps refecting the clients background in advertising and parto the simple language created by the interplay o di erent materials.

RESPONDINGTO HISTORYThe Archaeology Museum of Vitoria in Spain shares a courtyard with the historic Palace oBendaa, closing o the space and replacingthe backs o other buildings. The design makesextensive use o cast bronze elements to createcontrasting elevational treatments. From out-side, continuous vertical ns create an impen-etrable wall with a ew, deep-set windows, whilethe glazed courtyard acades are screened with astrong vertical matrix.

The overall e ect is o an ageless ortress in anurban setting, revealing more o its nature andgrowing increasingly open as you approach andenter the courtyard. The architects, Mangado yAsociados S.L, describe the building as a com-pact jewel box concealing the treasures that his-tory has entrusted to us. This theme is carriedthrough with conviction to the dramatic exhibitionspaces where white, glazed daylight prisms piercethrough the dark foors and ceilings, with thickouter walls containing the exhibition displays.

In Copenhagen, Denmark, the Frederikskaj Housing project makes the most o its harbour-side location with 152 light andspacious apartments overlooking the regenerated canal dis-trict. Apartment layouts are fexible, extending outside ontogenerous balconies, with ull-height glazing maximising day-light and views. Social living is concentrated around a new ca-nal and well-designed landscaping, creating a link to the har-

bour: the building literally has its eet in the water.

Theunderstated but beauti ully detailed copper skin gives the building asolidity in dialogue with its concrete rame that is entirely appropri-ate in this commercial area. The Mediacomplex 22@ project resulted rom a partnership between the city oBarcelona, 22@ an organisation or the development o new technologies - and acommercial company. Its pivotal location sees Barcelonas orthogonal grid inter-sect with the Avinguda Diagonal an area with an industrial heritage. The projectbrings together a diversity o activities including research, teaching, productionand creativity all associated with the audiovisual world.

The design, by Patrick Genard y Asociados and Ferrater & Asociados, responds di-rectly to the strong local urban ramework while meeting the complex programmeand is divided into two, polarized elements. The Factory is a solid, horizontal block,

aligned with an existing 19th century industrial building as a simple continuation. Incontrast, the vertically orientated Tower expresses in its plan the changes in streetpattern below. The Factory is opaque and smooth with panels o per orated copperltering the daylight while the Tower presents a strong vertical grid o deeply re-cessed, copper- aced screens shading the glazing. But both elements share com-mon proportions and extensive use o copper as a uni ying material.

Leaking roo s replaced with copperTe Phtitsa Convent has six churches still in active use. Te designsor the convent were originally drawn by Mihail imo eevichPreobrazhenskij, Academian rom St Petersburg, and the architecturaland constructional work was run by Alexander Poleschuk, born inSaarema. Since some o the buildings had been built in the previouscentury, the old sheet metal roo s had rusted and were badly in need o repair. Constant patching was extremely di cult, and only helped or

a short time, so re-roo ng was essential.

Te ordinary sheet metal that used to cover the roo was susceptible tocorrosion and needed constant repair and painting. At the same timethe domes also had to be painted, which was neither simple nor sa e.Copper was selected as it is durable and requires no paint, says MotherVarvara , Mother Superior o the convent or over orty years. Tis time, our o the six convent churches were re-roo ed with Finnish copper. Allthe buildings have diferent shapes and materials, some with painted

wood and stone on the aades. Tere ore the selection copper colourrequired care ul consideration. Te dark Nordic Brown copper waschosen or the Cathedral o the Dormition o the Mother o God,

Uspenie Church and the Church o St Elijah the Prophet in Vasknarva. In contrast, Nordic Green was installed on the Church o St Nicholasand the Church o St Sergius o Radonezh.

Installation o the roo s was carried out by a group o Russian sheetmetal workers and the architectural work was run partly by MrMelnikov, Manager. Te demanding two-year project has just beencompleted and convent li e has now returned to normal. Te conventis an interesting place to visit and the nuns diligence can be seeneverywhere throughout the vast a rea in the well-preserved buildings, beauti ully kept gardens and neatly stacked rewood.
