March 2012
Copley High School
Smoke signals
March is upon us and it is a busy month at Copley High School. However, this is also the time of year when
our students typically have the most difficult time staying focused as we are stuck between the grey skies of
winter and the promise of spring and all of the events that go along with the final quarter of a school year.
This month, students will be busy finalizing their course selections and scheduling for the 2012-13 school year.
In addition, March is a significant month for our tenth graders as they prepare for the Ohio Graduation Test
(OGT). To help our sophomores prepare for these required tests, we have had nearly 90 students sign-up
for our after school OGT Prep class and we are offering Study Tables each day after school for any student
interested. This is in addition to the OGT prep work being completed in all 10th grade classes, as well as
academic supports available during the school day through our Academic Assist and OGT Lunch Prep sessions.
The staff at CHS has been working extremely hard to prepare for the OGT and we are confident that
everyone’s hard work will payoff in more prepared, confident and successful test takers.
If you would like to work at home to prepare for the OGT, materials are also available online at the Ohio
Department of Education’s website (http://www.ode.state.oh.us/). Go to the testing link on the right side of
the page to find previously released tests under the link for released test materials or download workbooks to
assist students under the link for Ohio Graduation Test and then Resources for Ohio Graduation Tests. Another
great OGT resource can be found at Ohio’s Statewide Testing site (http://ogt.success-ode-state-oh-us.info/)
where you can set-up a free account and have your child practice using an on-line test/tutorial that will assist
in not only accessing practice questions, yet learning as they go as to which of their answers were correct or
wrong and the reasons behind the answer. Please contact me if you are looking for additional review
materials for your child.
The OGT will be administered to all sophomores and any juniors or
seniors that still need to pass a section of the test from March 12th
through March 16th. Freshman will be taking a practice OGT during this
time. Our upperclassmen understand the importance of this assessment
in terms of it being a graduation requirement. However, please join us
in instilling this same level of importance to our freshman. Although it is
a practice test, we do analyze the results and those students scoring
below average will be required to participate in an intervention program
to improve the probability of their success on the OGT.
To establish an effective testing environment, Copley High School will
operate on a delayed schedule during the OGT week. Please read the
letter included in this addition of Smoke Signals for the specifics in
regards to OGT week and our delayed schedule. This letter was also
distributed to all students on February 24th.
February Students in the Spotlight. As is shared each month, I
would like to acknowledge our most recent student and athlete of the
month. For the month of February, CHS is proud to recognize

Jordan Ody as our Student of the Month and swimmer Madison Myers as our Athlete of the Month.
Congratulations to these outstanding Copley Indians!
As I shared in an earlier issue, we were very proud to have six students selected as semifinalists for the
National Merit Scholarship competition. Congratulations to Jessica Alexander, Denny Check, Nicholas
Geisendorfer and Carrie Goldstein, who have moved on in the competition as finalists in the 2012 National
Merit Scholarship Program. National Merit Scholarship winners of 2012 will be announced beginning in
April. We are extremely proud of these students and their accomplishments.
Our Speech and Debate team continue with their winning tradition. Nine students recently qualified for the
State tournament in March; Jason Makishi, Claudine Teberchani, Matt Reinke, Drew Harpel all in Public
Forum debate, Mary Jo Talley and Brandon Hofacker in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Angela Rejon in Oratorical
Interpretation, and Cory Sutter and Shana Zelenia in Student Congress Debate. The State Finals will be March
2nd and 3rd at Jackson High School in Canton.
Finally, we are very proud of the accomplishments of our winter athletes that have recently wrapped-up their
successful seasons. Our boys swimming team brought home a league title for the second year in a row. In
addition, Chris Lane and Madison Myers competed in the state swimming tournament, which is an
outstanding accomplishment for these two athletes. We also still have four wrestlers still in contention as
they move on to districts. It should be an exciting few weeks for these athletes and our basketball teams as
we conclude our winter season and prepare for spring sports.
In March, we will also be bringing in Joel Penton (http://joelpenton.com/) for an assembly on March 6th in
which he will share with students the importance of not just making commitments, but following through and
keeping commitments; the fact that ordinary people can accomplish great things by simply following through
with the commitments they have made. In addition, we will be working with the Ohio Department of
Transportation to host a Distracted Driver program on March 8th. Students can participate during their study
hall or lunch period to go through a simulation and learn the effects of texting and driving or drinking and
driving.
As you can tell, it will be a busy month at CHS. As always, thank you for your continued support of all that
we do at Copley High School. It is a privilege to work with you and your children on a daily basis. If I can
ever be of any assistance, please contact me any time at, my door is always open.
Sincerely,
Cameron M. Ryba

Dear Parents/Guardians:
During the week of March 12, 2012, our tenth grade students will take the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) that is mandated by the
Ohio Department of Education. Along with our tenth graders, any eleventh and twelfth grade students who did not pass one or more
portions of the OGT last school year will also be taking the applicable sections of the test at this time. A student must pass all five
sections of this test to graduate from high school with a diploma. In order to provide the best environment for the students who are
required to take the test, we will modify our school day from Monday, March 12, 2012 through Friday, March 16, 2012 as detailed
below.
Ninth Grade Students.
Freshmen should report to their assigned homeroom prior to 7:25 a.m. Students should refer to posters hung in the main lobby to
verify their homeroom location. Students in the ninth grade will take practice OGT tests as the schedule details below all week long.
Tenth Grade Students.
Sophomores should report to homeroom prior to 7:25 a.m. Students should refer to posters hung in the main lobby to verify their
homeroom location. Students in the tenth grade will take the required five sections of the OGT test as the schedule details below.
Testing will begin each day at 7:25 a.m. Students will have 2½ hours to complete each test.
Eleventh and Twelfth Grade Students.
Juniors and seniors who need to pass one or more sections of the OGT will be notified about which day(s) they need to report for
testing. Students who have passed all parts of the test should report to school as follows:
March 12th: Report at 9:45 a.m. as the first bell will ring at 9:50 a.m.
March 13th-16th: Report at 9:15 a.m. as the first bell will ring at 9:20 a.m.
Transportation.
There will be no special bus service for this testing process, so please take the next few weeks to arrange transportation for your
student if he/she is not part of the testing programs. Students who arrive prior to 9:45 a.m. on Monday or 9:15 a.m. Tuesday through
Friday should report to the commons.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us to provide an effective testing environment for our students. As always, should you have
questions, please contact me at any time.
Sincerely,
Cameron M. Ryba

L e t t e r f r o m t h e A s s i s t a n t P r i n c i p a l
As we begin the month of March, I would like to give a few reminders of our expectations for attendance and
punctuality, as well as student behavior. It is important as we transition into the warmer months and the
excitement for summer begins that continue to work towards our goals.
Student Behavior
With warm weather approaching, it is common students begin to catch “spring fever”! This excitement and
restlessness can lead to an increase in student behavior issues. I would like to take time in this issue of Smoke
Signals to reinforce the importance of working to follow the code of conduct. Often during this time of year, an
increase in class cuts, tardies, misconduct, and arguments occurs. Please encourage your student to remain
focused on their academics. As mentioned in last month’s article, discipline is down. Let’s keep up the hard
work and ensure that behavior only improves in the second half of the school year. As always, if you should
notice that your student is experiencing any problems at school or with other students from school, please do
not hesitate to let us know.
Tardiness
It is important that I take a moment to remind our families that at the beginning of the second semester your
tardy count returns to zero. It is important that students work to get to class and school on time. Not only does
tardiness lead to disciplinary consequences, but also it causes students to miss valuable instructional time.
Students miss important concepts and consequently earn lower grades when consistently tardy to a class. Now
that everyone has been given a fresh start, it is important to work to make certain that students are here on time.
The attendance policies of Copley High School have been established to set reasonable expectations for
attendance that will insure the appropriate, active involvement of students and help them to attain their
educational goals. Tardiness is defined as being less than 10 minutes late to any class. After 10 minutes the
absence from class will be considered a class cut. All students must be on time to school and class. If a student
is not on time, the following consequences will occur:
Tardy to School
3rd Tardy – Office Warning
5th Tardy – Friday Detention will be assigned.
10th Tardy – 1-3 days I.S.A.P.
15th Tardy and any subsequent tardies – Loss of Driving/Parking Privilege – Possible OSS
Tardy to Class
2nd Tardy – Teacher Warning
3rd and 4th Tardy – Teacher assigns a detention for each tardy
5th Tardy and any subsequent tardies to class – a Disciplinary Referral will be sent to the Assistant
Principal and a Friday Detention will be assigned
PTSA Rewards Partnership
Throughout this school year, it has been a pleasure to have had the opportunity to reward our kids for their
positive behaviors. Thanks to the generous support of or athletic boosters, various local businesses, our PTSA,
and other donors it has been possible to ensure the success of the PTSA Rewards Partnership. This quarter we
have been able to provide over 30 students with rewards ranging from Robeks to laptop computers for being a
good kid. This program appears to be making a difference in reducing tardies and discipline referrals. In next
month’s article of Smoke Signals, I will share specific data in comparison to last year. I would like to take a
moment to thank our kids for their good behavior.

REPORTING ABSENCES
When absent from school, a student is
to have his/her parents or guardian phone the school 330-
664-4823 before 9:00 a.m. on the day of absence so that
the reason for the absence will be known. The attendance
office routinely calls parents/guardians to verify absence.
Parents should not be offended by the call. The call is only
to ensure the location and safety of the student. Without
parent contact, a student will be presumed unexcused and
dealt with accordingly. NOTE: Doctor and dentist
appointments should be made after school hours when
possible. Regardless of the reason, if a student misses
more than 2½ hours of the school day, the student will be
charged a minimum of ½ day absence.

Academic Challenge Team
The Copley HS Academic Challenge team hosted its 21st Copley Invitational tournament on Saturday, February 25th. With 88 teams from 42 schools all over the state, the competition was fierce. Copley itself had 6 different teams participating. The
Varsity A team came in second in its bracket while the Varsity B team won its division. Other varsity teams compiled records of 5-2 and 4-3. In a first this year, teams from the middle school participated in the junior varsity division against other high school teams. They compiled a very respectable 4-3 and 2-5 record by playing varsity teams with varsity questions. The team wishes to thank the many community members that showed their support by contributing food for the readers and coaches buffet as well as to the parents of the team members who spent their entire Saturday helping out so that their students could play. As former HS Social Studies teacher George Kegg always used to say, "It's great to be in Copley!"
Indian Uprising!
It’s Tournament time in Copley.
Exciting things are happening at Copley High School in the world of Athletics. In swimming, our boys team captured the Suburban League title, two of our boys (Chris Lane – breast stroke, and Cooper Comstock – back stroke) were OHSAA Sectional Champs, seven boys (Chris, Cooper, Henry Signore, Kory Braman, Hikaru Canode, Manny Bloch, and So Ueyoko) advanced to the District Tournament, and Chris Lane qualified for the State meet in Canton. On the girls side, four girls (Madison Myers, Brenda Prifti, Gabi Rodriguez, and Emma Round) made the Districts, and ninth grader, Madison Myers qualified for the State meet in two events, finishing 7th in the State in the back stroke. Three wrestlers, Zach Walker, Matt Nedolast, and Isaiah Wheeler, were Suburban League Champions. Those three, and Austin Lewarchick, advanced to the Districts, and
Isaiah qualif ied for the State Tournament in Columbus. Damon Hickman became the first Copley Indian to ever qualify for the State Bowling Championships in Columbus.

office practice theory, business software
programs, and awareness of management styles
and actions. Both junior and senior year classes
along with the job requirement will give the
student 3.5 credits. If the student has the
credits and classes can be arranged accordingly,
early dismissal will be available, too.
Science Department The past year has been one of continued growth
and excellence in the science department. Nine
teachers lead and instruct 14 required and
elective courses offered to our students. These
courses are lab based, technology integrated,
and academically engaging so to provide our
students with an outstanding science
experience.
A popular elective in the science department,
Forensic Science focuses on the techniques used
by crime scene investigators and the science
behind their work. Students take their own
fingerprints and analyze them the same way a
forensic technician would. Another popular
topic is blood spatter. Students conduct experiments with simulated blood and use
spatter to determine what happened at a crime
scene. In April, two students who are interested
in Forensics as a career, have the exciting
opportunity to attend a CSI Day at Baldwin-
Wallace College where they will solve a
professionally staged crime scene. All of the
Forensic Science students will use the
knowledge they have gained for the culminating
video project in the fourth nine weeks. Students
act out their own staged crime scene and then
must show how to solve the crime using real
forensic techniques.
In all levels of biology, simple dissections have
now been implemented. Every student who
enrolls in biology has the opportunity to
examine a variety of specimen from the
earthworm to the grass frog. In physics,
students can now use an “App” designed for the
iPod to study motion. Students utilize the video
camera on the iPod to capture video of an
object in motion. The object is then analyzed to
examine the connection between position,
velocity, and acceleration.
In addition, several guest speakers and
professionals have visited our classrooms to
provide practical scientific experiences. Among
two include Dr. Martin Hellman and Dr. Eric
Baumgartner. Dr. Martin Hellman, from Akron,
spoke to our AP Biology class about bacteria
and viruses. He shared many experiences from
his work at Pittsburgh Children's Hospital
where he works as a Pediatric Emergency
Physician. Dr. Eric Baumgartner from Ohio
Northern University and formerly a 10 year
engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena, CA, spoke to our physics
classes. Discussions focused on his career in a
number of technical and management positions
including a critical leadership role on the Mars
Exploration Rover project that successfully
launched, landed and operated the Spirit and
Opportunity rovers on the Martian surface.
Furthermore, in the spring of 2011, student’s
scores in advanced placement biology,
chemistry, and physics c mechanics were among
the highest in school history, earning an average
score of “4” out of a maximum score of
“5.” Typically, scores of this magnitude can
earn a student up to a full year of introductory
level college credit in that particular science.
In the near future, we will begin aligning our
curriculum to meet the revised science education standards and model curriculum. We
will continue to implement and utilize the latest
technology in all of our courses. Finally, we will
continue to adopt a student-centered, inquiry-
based approach to learning so to elicit the most
appropriate science education to all of our
students.

TEN WAYS TO
TEST DRIVE A COLLEGE
1. Learn about the college before
you visit.
2. Evaluate the environment of the campus.
3. Visit the admissions office and participate in the
information session.
4. Tour the campus, with and without a guide.
5. Check out the dorms.
6. Arrange for campus meetings with department heads in the subjects that interest you, coaches
in sports where you excel, and former graduates from your high school.
7. Sit in on classes and check out the library.
8. Look into life beyond academics.
9. Have lunch in the student center and watch
student interactions.
10. After each visit, write down your impressions of
the college.
A CHECK LIST FOR CAMPUS VISITS
Timing Visits
While it is all right to unofficially visit when
you are still doing some general checking on colleges, when it comes time for a formal visit, be sure to
schedule it ahead of time with the Admissions Office of the college or university when you can arrange for
both a campus tour and an interview. Plan your visit
for a weekday when college is in session and avoid registration or exam periods. It helps to have walked
around the campus – to get a feel for the institution – before going for your interview.
Campus Tour
By all means, take the campus tour and don’t hesitate to ask questions of your
guide. If the tour doesn’t include them, try to visit some student rooms, the
library, and the department in which you
may major.
The Interview
Dress appropriately and arrive five minutes early. Be
prepared to answer such questions as “What makes
you interested in our college?” and “What are your special interests?” And ask some questions yourself,
but not about things which could be answered if you had studied the catalog. Act interested in the school
and reiterate your interest at the end of the conversation. Ask if all your papers are in order, if it
is that time of year. If you plan to file for financial
aid, ask how and when that should be done
Paper Work
Bring along extra copies of your resume or summary
to leave with the interviewer or others, if needed.
Use the interviewer’s name and title when you write to thank him or her for
the interview and to repeat your special interest in the school. Take along your
file of papers on the school, just to refresh your memory or provide any missing information.
Free Time
Spend some time on your own around the campus.
Take a look at the times on the bulletin boards, news in the school paper, and the building which you’re
most likely to use. How do you like the looks of the
students? Would you fit in? Try to talk to some of them. Ask the
prospective students with whom you took the campus tour about their
impressions and comparisons with
other schools which they have visited. Try to sit in on a class or
two, hopefully in the area in which you may major. This may be arranged by the admissions office or
perhaps by asking permission of the professor ahead of time.
Final Steps
When you get a breather, sit down and write up your impressions of the school. What did you like? Not
like? What questions remain? What actions do you
need to take?

Here are some tips to help you fill out a college or scholarship
application correctly:
Follow instructions carefully. If you are careful when you fill out your application, your interviewer will tend to think you would be a careful worker too.
Be neat. Print or write clearly so that it can be easily read.

Cheryl Wells - CHS PTSA After Prom Chair
The After Prom committee is looking for those great candid shots (past and present)
of your senior……the cuter and funnier the better.
As you are reminiscing through your pictures wondering how your senior grew up
so fast, be sure to make copies of some of those precious pictures and send them into
the school. A collage of submitted photos will be displayed in the Commons during
the 2012 After Prom for the kids to enjoy. The photos will remain on the wall
through Commencement and will then be provided to the senior class president to
save for future reunions.
Please send in any photos of your senior and their friends for the Senior Photo Wall
(put them in an envelope and send to CHS marked “Senior Photo Wall”).
Only send copies please – photos will not be returned.
