About Us Established in 1983, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation is a registered Canadian charity managed by a Board of Directors. As of December 31st, 2012, the Foundation has four Directors and one full-time employee. Since its inception, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation has raised over $10.5 million for Copernicus Lodge.

Mission Statement The Copernicus Lodge Foundation raises funds to maintain and enhance the comfort and quality of resident care at Copernicus Lodge by providing funding for major initiatives; new and expanding facilities; specialized equipment and services; and resident activities.

The Copernicus Lodge Foundation works with the Copernicus Lodge Board of Directors and Copernicus Lodge management to identify the highest priority needs to ensure that funds raised are directed to the areas of greatest need, while maintaining the mandate of the Foundation.

Dear Friends,

On February 11th, 1983, the Nicholas Copernicus (Toronto) Foundation was officially incorporated as a registered Canadian charity. Over the past 30 years, much has changed for the better, including our name. Now known as the Copernicus Lodge Foundation, we can proudly say we’ve raised over $10.5 million for Copernicus Lodge. It has been an honour to serve on the Copernicus Lodge Foundation Board of Directors for the last seven years. During my four years as President of the Copernicus Lodge Foundation, there have been countless challenges but just as many successes. Uncertain economic times have forced us to rethink our fundraising strategy, and most notably, cancel our annual Celestial Ball in 2009. It was a tough decision to make but it’s merely one example of many that have been made during my tenure. As our community continues to age, we have realized that our fundraising methods need to adapt to attract younger donors and compete with newcharities. With that said, you may have noticed the Copernicus Lodge Foundation now maintains a presence on several social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. In the coming months, we’ll also be unveiling our new website at www.copernicuslodgefoundation.com. Many of these changes started to occur in August 2012 when the Foundation Board made the decision to once again hire a full-time employee. If you’ve visited, called or emailed the Foundation office in the past five months, you’ve undoubtedly interacted with Jessica Wroblewski, our ‘new’ Administrative Officer. She takes care of the day-to-day duties at the Foundation office and reports regularly to the Foundation Board of Directors. As a result, we hope you have noticed a significant improvement in the way the Foundation functions and serves its donors.

Ultimately, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation exists to raise money for Copernicus Lodge and its residents. Everything the Foundation does should further this goal or we are simply not doing our job. Each dollar you donate to the Copernicus Lodge Foundation supports Polish-Canadian seniors and enables Copernicus Lodge to remain one of the best long-term and self-care facilities in Toronto. On behalf of the Copernicus Lodge Foundation Board of Directors, I would like to extend our sincere thanks for your generous support in 2012. Whether you made a gift in response to our annual Christmas appeal; made a donation in memory of or to honour a friend or relative; contributed directly; or supported the fundraising efforts of the Copernicus Lodge Auxiliary or the Knights of Columbus, we appreciate that giving to Copernicus Lodge is a priority for you. Over the past three years, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation has strived to keep expenses at an acceptable level while slowly shifting our focus from event-based fundraising to raising funds through direct mail campaigns, planned giving (bequests/estates) and project-based grants. This change in approach is due in part to a continued decline in the number donations (and consequently, a decline in overall revenue) that the Copernicus Lodge Foundation receives on an annual basis. Additionally, Copernicus Lodge itself is aging and requiring significant renovations to ensure the building remains safe, accessible and inviting for our residents, their families and their friends. In 2012, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation received and approved a $125,800 funding request from Copernicus Lodge. These funds were used to purchase essential items such as kitchen equipment, grounds equipment and hospital beds. The funds also assisted with the costs of various repairs around Copernicus Lodge. Thank you to all of our donors for your continued support. We couldn’t do it without you!

Donor Recognition Evening

On December 2nd, 2012, the Copernicus Lodge Foundation held its annual Donor Recognition Evening. Attended by over 200 Copernicus Lodge supporters, the event featured lively entertainment in Polish and English by John Gora & Friends and the Radość-Joy Vocal Dance Group.

Thank you to the Copernicus Lodge Auxiliary for their generous $50,000 donation at the 2012 Donor Recognition Evening. Since 1983, the Auxiliary has donated $1,099,465 to the Copernicus Lodge Foundation.

Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for their $10,000 donation at the 2012 Donor Recognition Evening. This money was raised at their highly successful annual Father Michael Smith Memorial Golf Tournament. Over 124 golfers took part in the tournament on June 16th, 2012 at Granite Ridge Golf Club in Milton, ON.

In recognition of the Marie Curie Sklodowska Association’s $30,000 donation in 2011, the Family Dining Room at Copernicus Lodge has been named in their honour. A plaque commemorating this donation has been placed outside the Family Dining Room on the ground floor of the Phase III building.
