The Classical Citation as e-Citation

The “translation” of this classical citation to an URL address uses the journal short title as domain, and vol., first page and publication year as folders.

The classical citation

Ann. Geophys., 22, 3–13, 2004

results in the e-citation:

www.ann-geophys.net/22/3/2004/

* The Copernicus Gesellschaft uses .net domains

The Resolver to prevent Linking Errors

• Full citation: www.ann-geophys.net/22/3/2004/ points to the abstract /angeo-22-3-2004.html

• Forgotten year: www.ann-geophys.net/22/3/ also points to the abstract /angeo-22-3-2004.html due to its uniqueness

• Forgotten page: www.ann-geophys.net/22/ points to the “Volumes and issues” overview

• Forgotten volume: www.ann-geophys.net/ points to the home page of the journal

* The URL with long notation www.annales-geophysicae.net also points to the home page of the journal and is used for advertisement (because it is easy to memorise).

The Advantages of the new URL Structure for e-Citations

• The unique & permanent link is self-explanatory. No need for a resolver like for DOI numbers!

• Finding a citation e.g. in the reference list of another article allows the reader to find the online version directly.

• Search engines, data bases & archives can generate the links by their own because the links only consist of typical

bibliographic data.

• The URLs are independent from any society or publisher. After selling the journal any new publisher will get the domain and

can keep all links!
