The 36th edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festi-

val starts on Friday, July 4, and offers 10 days

of enjoyable jazz fest throughout Copenhagen

and Frederiksberg. With 100 venues and more

than 120 concerts a day, the Copenhagen Jazz

Festival is one of Europe’s largest jazz events.

Big-name international actsThis year the organisers of CJF are encour-

aging the public to buy their tickets well in

advance as they say that tickets are selling

pretty fast, mostly because of the many in-

ternational names on the line-up. Some of the

big-name acts you should look out for include

the likes of; Concha Buika (ES), The John

Scofield Überjam Band (US), Tinariwen (ML),

Manu Katché & Richard Bona (FR/CM), Chil-

dren of the Light Trio (PA/US), Stacey Kent

(US), Hiromi (JP), Thurston Moore & Mats

Gustafsson (US/SE), Christian McBride Trio

(US), Dave Holland’s “Prism” (UK/US), Joshua

Redman Quartet (US) and many more.

Besides the headliners, whom you can read

more about in this Supplement, the pro-

gramme also includes several local Danish acts

not to be missed – and Copenhageners are en-

couraged to go out and support our local jazz

scene. In addition these is also on offer; Open

Air concerts, children’s jazz, night concerts, and

this year’s special concert themes such as Jazz

by the Sea, Something Else, 21st Century Jazz,

Future Sound of Jazz, Jazz Remixed, Jazz

Meets the Street, among others. One of this

year’s newest themes is Wild at Heart, which

focuses on female instrumentalists and com-

posers at Copenhagen Main Library venue.

getting aroundCopenhagen is a small city and easy to get

around whether you are travelling by foot, by

bike or by the city’s widespread public trans-

port system. During Copenhagen Jazz Festival

we will make it even easier. In collaboration

with the traffic companies of the capital, Co-

penhagen Jazz Festival offers an Event Ticket

that lets you travel freely to and from the fes-

tival’s more than 100 venues.

The Event Ticket is bought online and delivered

directly to your phone as a SMS. The ticket is

valid for 12 hours and comes in two versions:

A day ticket valid from 08:00 – 20:00 and

an evening ticket valid from 16:00 – 04:00.

The ticket costs 20 DKK for zones 1-4 (cover-

ing Copenhagen including the airport) and 40

DKK for all zones (covering the whole capital

region). The tickets allows you to travel with

two kids younger than 12 years, free of charge.

african rootsVoted one of the world’s “50 Great Voices”

by NPR Music, Buika, born of African descent

on the island of Majorca, has emerged as a

true innovator, and is a must-see artist among

jazz aficionados. Buika is a creative survivor, a

poet, composer, music producer and considers

the role of “Mother” her paramount priority.

She credits nature and her life’s experiences

for her most profound lessons.

Her evident African roots and her cosmopoli-

tanism, developed in clubs in Spain and Amer-

icanised during a surreal stint in Las Vegas,

explain Buika’s rare self-possession. Having

performed in over 22 countries, language has

never been an obstacle. Her audience spans

the world and they adore her unique qual-

ities. In 2010, Buika performed 95 concerts

and the outpouring of appreciation in places

like France, Turkey, Argentina and Mexico

among others, stands out. Nothing can quite

explain her ability to connect with her audi-

ence, in spite of the fact that she sings nearly

exclusively in Spanish – Buika is simply one of

those rare and wonderful “one listen” artists.

It’s a quality that struck the renowned film-

maker Pedro Almodóvar, who cast her in The Skin I Live In, and jazz legend Chick Corea, who

featured Buika as a special guest during his

epic run at the Blue Note in late 2011.

award-winning soundBuika began in the music industry in 2001,

with her first album Mestizuo (2001 Produc-

ciones Blau S.L.), a presentation in the form

of piano and vocals. Since then she has had

several other successful and award-winning

albums. Her latest release is En Mi Piel (In My

Skin), an exhaustive two-disc compilation on

Warner Music Latina that showcases Buika’s

breathtaking diversity and range, and her

development as a total artist. The collection

begins with the two songs she performed in

the Almodóvar film: Por el amor de amar (For

the Love of Love) and a scintillating version

of Se me hizo facil (It Was Easy), the original

of which appeared on the Trago CD. En Mi Piel also features signature songs from her earli-

er releases and as well as tracks culled from

Buika’s guest appearances on projects by pro-

ducer/guitarist Javier Limón, singer Armando

Manzanero, Cuban pianists Bebo and Chucho

Valdés, and special editions of her CDs not

available in the U.S.

music under the starsThe desert is a place of hardship and subtle

beauty, a stark world that reveals its secrets

slowly and carefully. Life in the desert is re-

silient and strong, and the people are gentle

giants among the sand, storms, and sun. For

Saharan blues band Tinariwen, the desert is

their home, and their hypnotic and electrifying

guitar rock reflects complex realities of their

Homebase in North West Africa. Descended

from nomadic people who have wandered the

dunes for millennia, the music of Tinariwen

travels too, reverberating far from dusty plains

of Mali. Their 2011 album Tassili, was even re-

corded in the Algerian desert, in a tent and un-

der the stars.

In the late 1990s, they were discovered by

Western musicians and for the first time, the

nomads now travel the world, performing at

nearly every notable festival and venue.

gloBal influenceThe group’s latest offering, Emmar, is a richly

layered listen solidified by atmospheric tex-

tures and gritty guitar-work. Along with the

original members who founded the group in

the 1980s (vocalists and guitarists Ibrahim Ag

Alhabib, Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni, and Alhas-

sane Ag Touhami) and the younger generation

who grew up listening to the band and joined

in the 1990s (multi-instrumentalist Eyadou Ag

Leche, guitarist Elaga Ag Hamid, and percus-

sionist Said Ag Ayad), a group of American

musicians appear on the album. The album is

also accompanied by Red Hot Chili Peppers

guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Matt Sweeney from

Chavez, Nashville fiddler Fats Kaplin, and poet

Saul Williams.

accomplished guitaristJakob Bro is a Danish guitar play-

er and composer currently living

of Eden, ECM – 2006) and a cur-

rent member of Tomasz Stanko’s

Dark Eyes Quintet (Dark Eyes,

ECM – 2009). He has released

10 records as a bandleader, work-

ing with musicians including; Lee

Konitz, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian,

Cheek, Thomas Morgan, and

many more. Jakob is currently

tensen and Thomas Morgan. This

trio recorded for ECM records in

November 2013.

discovering jazz in copenhagen“I listened to Ornette Coleman

play at the Copenhagen Jazz

Festival some years back, and it

was mesmerising. All of a sud-

den completely out of the blue

something happened in that

music that changed me. Like a

gathering of energy that seemed

to be completely natural and yet

overwhelming and surprising – it’s

mysterious,” explains Jakob of

his love for jazz. From these un-

assuming beginnings, he has to

date received five Danish Music

Awards and has been accepted

into Jazz Denmark’s Hall of Fame.

The guitarist has played at the

Copenhagen Jazz Festival every

year since 1999, saying that every

year has been different and en-

joyable. “The Jazz Festival uses

the entire city of Copenhagen

as its venue, and Copenhagen

is a beautiful city. It’s got a very

welcoming atmosphere. You can

play avant-garde or New Orleans or whatever – the important thing is the love for music and for im-provisation,” he enthuses. Of the jazz scene in Copenhagen, Jakob says that there are so many inter-esting musicians, composers and bands; Copenhagen’s music scene is thriving. This year Jakob recom-mends that you not miss Jesper Zeuthen Trio at Koncertkirken on the 9th July at 22:00.

alex riel and the great danesAlex Riel has played with many of the greatest

tenor saxophonists of all time. Now he is one

of the legends others mention as a musician

they are proud to have played with. A legend

that generations of musicians worldwide have

listened to and been inspired by. It is exact-

ly 50 years since Alex Riel played an entire

month with Dexter Gordon, Tete Monteliu and

NHØP in this room. Jazz’s finest school. Along

with the terrific Italian pianist Dado Moroni

and super bassist Jesper Lundgaard, Alex Riel

will show why he is regarded as one of the

most important drummers of all time. Let us

pay tribute to a true master.

Montmartre’s musical director, Christian

Brorsen, says that the theme for the venue’s

programme this year is a focus on the many

great musicians in Copenhagen. “We call it

Alex Riel & The Great Danes (Tomas Franck,

Jesper Lundgaard, Carsten Dahl, Thomas Fon-

nesbæk, Henrik Bolberg) meets the New Mas-

ters of Jazz (Charenee Wade, Danny Grissett,

Dado Moroni, Abel Marcel, Gabor Bolla and Lee Pearson),” explains Christian.

Christian has participated in the Festival for about 30 years or so, and says that he start-ed to hang out around 1979, and his first gig was in 1983-84. “The meeting between Danish and foreign musicians at Montmartre excites me about the festival, perhaps one of the best rooms in the world to play jazz. To me this is the core of jazz – as Alex once put it: ‘That’s where you start, playing at clubs - having fun, then suddenly you sit on big stages, where you can’t hear or see who you are playing with’,” he explains.

Regardless, Montmartre remains the venuethat jazz artists from all over the world keepcoming back to perform at.

There has been much excitement in anticipa-tion of Alex’s performance. Christian says that much focus has been on the drummer, howev-er he does urge Festival goers to try and see as many local Danish performances as possi-ble. “I would suggest that you get your tickets to Tomas Franck’s set, as he is one of the most important tenor players in Europe at present. He is known worldwide and deserves more at-tention,” he urges.

american infused with danish jazzAmerican pianist and composer Aaron Parks

has a long resume as a musician, even though

he is only 30 years old. He has been a reg-

ular part of Terrence Blanchard’s group since

he was 18 years old, and has also played with

musicians such as Christian Scott, Gretchen

Parlato, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Joshua Red-

man. He has also published seven albums in

his own name as a solo pianist, with legend-

ary record label ECM, and has appeared on

several Danish records – including Donald

“AC” Christensen’s Dear Someone and Christian

Vuusts’ Urban Hymns.

Aaron Parks has visited Denmark before and

has been involved with Summer Session at

Vallekilde School, this is only part of the rea-

son why he now chooses to settle in Copenha-

gen over the summer of 2014, but rather to be

an active part of the Danish jazz scene, where

he will play concerts, record, giving master

classes as well as compose.

wild at heartAs part of the Wild at heart theme, the CJF

2014 presents the Danish singer and compos-

er Broken Twin, who goes by the real name

Majke Voss Romme. She released her debut

album May in April at the prestigious Amer-

ican label ANTI (including Tom Waits, Betty

Lavette, Tinariwen and others). The record has

already garnered praise throughout Denmark

and abroad, where Majkes unique voice and

stylish song writing is emphasised as being

more than out of the ordinary.

Broken Twin’s universe is at once both frag-

ile and strong. It is intimate and based on the

fine text of honesty and hope and a melodi-

ous musical starting point. Broken Twin uses

a setup of bass, piano, guitar, vocals and per-

cussion mixed with whirlwinds of creaking

piano chairs and floating vocals. Her music

has been compared to the musical universe

of Feist, Nico and Anthony and the Johnsons.

PITCHFORK (US), says this of Broken Twin’s

sound: “There’s something about the unaf-

fected clarity of Broken Twin that rings true

straight away: The tremor in her proud voice,

sure as an arrow in contrast to the lonely ped-

al steel caws that arc throughout the song, as

she sings of a break-up shivering down lonely

spines, stark in the moon’s reflection, over a

humble, clanky piano line.”

the other part of the duoThe Swedish saxophonist Mats

Gustafsson is one of Scandina-

via’s biggest musical personal-

ities. With bands like Fire! and

The Thing, he has created some

of the most relevant free-jazz in

recent memory, and his solo per-

formances also show an extreme

physical control and musical

openness. He has performed with

musicians such as Derek Bailey,

Peter Brötzmann and The Ex,

and in 2011 he was awarded the

Nordic Council Music Prize. When

Gustafsson recently visited Jazz

House with his great orchestra

Fire! He earned great praise from

critics, including six stars in Gaffa.

Mats Gustafsson and Thurston

Moore have crossed swords on

several occasions. As a duo, they

among others, have released We Är Alla God’s slaves and Play Some Fucking Stooges. And now they col-

lide together in Jazzhouse during

Copenhagen Jazz Festival. A tear-

ing lightning bolt at the crossroads

of experimental rock and free-jazz.

thurston moore:

jazz By the seaJoshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artistes to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. Born in Berkeley, California, he is the son of legendary saxo-phonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of music and began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to what became his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone,

one year later. Redman quickly began jam-ming and gigging regularly with some of the leading jazz musicians of his generation. To date he has been nominated for two Gram-mys and has garnered top honours from critics and readers polls of DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice and Rolling Stone.

Joshua Redman has been one of the key pi-oneering saxophonists over the last 20 years. Together with his quartet, he each time em-barks on a new adventure. He is a gifted per-former and inventive saxophonist, and the quartet provides excellent accompaniment.

Drummer Gregory Hutchinson has the knack of starting a solo unobtrusively and trans-forming it into an explosive rhythmic blend. Reuben Rogers anchors the music with his deep tone featuring echoes of gospel. Pianist Aaron Goldberg devises sparkling lines, and entices Redman with his ingenious harmonies.

On stage Redman is a true performer, where he sounds more unpolished, pricklier, as well as more agreeable. He loves performing, since jazz is above all improvised music. This is when he changes into a compelling story teller, and identifies the perfect tempo for the concert.

indie rocker turned jazz jewelKira Skov has one of Denmark’s

most powerful voices whether she

sings rock or jazz. She made her

breakthrough in front of Danish

rock act The Kindred Spirits but

has recently established an im-

pressive career as a soloist – in

part by her magnificent covers

of Billie Holliday on the record

Memories of Days Gone By (2011).

Kira’s most recent record, When We Were Gentle (2013), blew away

the critics and has been acclaimed

“the record of her life”. Kira has

recently been granted a three

year work grant by the Danish

Art Council.

Following an extremely respected

indie rock career, Skov took the

jump into jazz in 2011 and was

accepted with open arms by large

audiences when she released her

interpretations of songs associat-

ed with the legendary Billie Holi-

day. Kira’s new album is a fusion

between her rock and roll past

and her present, open approach

to music – with unmistakable

references to her inspiration from

jazz. In February Kira received

two of the prestigious “Steppeulv”

awards for the album, and in May

she received “Carl Prisen” as writ-

From the 00s onwards, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival

has taken on new and exciting types of urban spaces

within the city, and this year is no exception. Papirøen

at Holmen not only offers patrons studios and work-

shops, as well as from April 2014, the newly opened

street food market in the old paper storage halls, but now also jazz

festival sharp concert theme Jazz Meets The Street, presented in

collaboration with Copenhagen Street Food. The musical palette is

just as colourful, spicy and appetising as the food that is simmering

at the stalls. What’s more, there is free admission to all concerts!

copenhagen street foodCopenhagen Street Food on Papirøen is a new creative space in Co-

penhagen’s harbour district. The focal point is international street

food, spiced with music, art and culture and sustainability, and a

view of the water, the Opera House and the Playhouse. Previously,

the warehouses were used by the press Fællesindkøb for storing

paper. Now the food market offers food sold out of trucks, contain-

ers and stalls. Here visitors can enjoy street food in a casual setting

with a stunning view the harbour.
