SCHOOL CAPTAINS’ LEASCHOOL CAPTAINS’ LEADERSHIP DAYDERSHIP DAY The role that we have been given as captains has come with many benefits and opportuni es. On Wednesday the 4th of May, we along with Mr Reap‐er le for Sydney, where a leadership day would be taking place the next day. A er checking into our hotel and mee ng with 2 students and a teacher from Murrumburrah High School, we took a short walk to circular quay for dinner, and to take in the sights of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
The next day we found out that the Sunrise studio was only just around the corner from where we had stayed. A er waving crazily through the window trying to make it on screen, the program eventually ended and the Sunrise crew came outside for a quick chat and a photo.
From there we then headed to Sydney’s parlia‐ment house, where we then were introduced
to several members from around the state, along with the school captains from other schools all over the state. A er a discussion with the Members, we then were taken into the lower house to watch a debate take place. A er this we then were taken to the upper house to see how the ideas of the lower house would be then further discussed and decided on.

YEAR 10 WAR MEMORIAL EXCURSIONYEAR 10 WAR MEMORIAL EXCURSION
On Friday the 6th of May, Year 10 travelled across to Canberra for a day at the War Memorial to help us with our study of History.
It was very interes ng as we saw primary and second‐ary sources throughout the memorial. Real life histori‐cal recrea ons provided us with an experience of war. The interac ves displays that we watched really brought to life what the soldiers had to go through. It was very heart‐warming to know what the soldiers had to go through to protect our country. It was touching to find out that the youngest soldier who went to war was only 14 years old.
It affected all of the students from Cootamundra emo‐onally going into the ‘Unknown’ soldier’s memorial,
knowing full well that the iden fica on of this person will never be known. It also was intriguing to find your

surname on the wall of memory knowing that it could be a rela ve of yours who fought so long ago. When we were at the war memorial, we got to see firsthand what it was like for the soldiers in the war. We had the opportunity to see an array of exhibi ons which covered World War I, World War II, Korea, Vi‐etnam, Afghanistan, as well as other conflicts that Aus‐tralia has been involved in.
SORRY DAYSORRY DAY
Na onal Sorry Day is an Australian wide observance that acknowledges the Stolen Genera on, held on May 26 each year. This day gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards heal‐ing for the Stolen Genera on, their families and communi es. Stolen Genera on refers to Indige‐nous Australians who were forcibly removed from their families and communi es. Na onal Sorry Day gives people the chance to give their commitment towards reconcilia on. This year Cootamundra High School will commemo‐rate ‘Sorry Day’ with a varia on on last year’s main features:
Students to wear FULL school uniform on the day,
Map of Australia mowed into grass on top oval, enclosing the word ’SORRY’
Everyone is to be on the Top Oval beginning of Period 6 for a brief school assembly, including Welcome to Country, explana on of ’Sorry Day’, then school and community placed onto the map of Australia, enclosing highlighted ’Sorry’.
The cherry picker is going to be used again to capture this, with Amanda Willoughby kindly offering to take pictures.
Cootamundra High School would like to extend an invita on to the community of Cootamundra to a end this occasion.

(WHERE EVERY STUDENT COUNTS) (WHERE EVERY STUDENT COUNTS) MATHS SUCCESS
Students who are successful in other subjects often have difficulty with maths. Reasons vary from one person to the next. Some suffer from maths anxiety or have a maths phobia, but for most it’s a matter of

not knowing how to study maths. Maths anxiety is one of the most frustrating obstacles to maths success. A student may do all the "right" things—work hard, pay attention in class, do home-work—and still not perform well on tests and quizzes. An internalized notion of "I can’t do maths" prevents these students from being success-ful. MathsPower.com has some excellent tips and information about how to cope with maths anxiety. A major reason many students don’t succeed in maths is because they lack good study skills. Stu-dents tend to study maths the same way they study other subjects. But maths requires the use of analytic reasoning and critical thinking skills. It’s not enough to just read and understand concepts—students must also be able to apply those concepts to solve prob-lems. PurpleMaths.com is an excellent online re-source that provides some very specific guidelines about how to study maths and do maths homework. Good organization and preparation are also essential for success in maths. For instance, the best way to prepare for a maths test is to keep up with all home-work and assignments as they are presented. As test time nears, all you have to do is review concepts and work some practice problems. Working with a competent tutor is a good solution for some students struggling with maths. The extra one-on-one time and attention can help facilitate under-standing and boost confidence. Good candidates for maths tutors retired teachers in the community, and peer tutors. Online paid tutoring services are also growing in pop-ularity. Two of the best known are Tutor.com and Brainfuse. One key to overcoming frustration with maths is to realize that it’s completely normal and that persis-tence usually pays off. Don’t give up the instant you realize you’re having trouble understanding a prob-lem. Read the problem again, several times if neces-sary. If there are terms you don’t understand, look them up. Be determined, and take advantage of easy access to online help. There are many good sites that provide help for most any maths topic. For example, to look up those terms you don’t know, use MathsWords.com. It gives the definition of maths terms used in prealgebra through to calculus.
