Coorg Tourism for Backpackers

Traveling on a tight budget without the freedom to spend huge amounts of money is what backpackers aspire on their trips. Most of the backpackers prefer locations that are offbeat, away from the touristy places, but somewhere that is picturesque, culturally diverse, packed with local delicacies as well as offers plenty of opportunity to walk or hike. Coorg tourism offers all of this and much more through its small district, which is also known locally as Kodagu.

The district headquarters and capital of Coorg is Madikeri. This is also where all the tourists can start their exploration of this beautiful region. Backpackers can get themselves budget accommodations that would cost them between INR 250/- to 500/- for a night. One can book accommodation beforehand to save time or land and be stranded. However, if one wishes to be more adventurous then it is advised to reach the city early and search for accommodation.

Walking around the vicinity is easy as Coorg tourism is very famous for its hospitality to the visitors. The locals are very friendly and always ready to help a traveler in need. The coffee plantations in the district give a very scenic view of nature and it provides a good opportunity to see how those working in the plantations carry on with the various aspects of coffee harvesting. The smell of roasted coffee beans being crushed is very refreshing, and we recommend having a cup of coffee at one of the restaurants in Coorg. One must never forget to do two things while they are in this beautiful place, first is to not miss a hot steaming cup of filter coffee and the second is to take back home at least a pack of coffee beans or powder.

Once the accommodation has been taken care of, the travellers typically go in search of good hygienic restaurants in Coorg. Mentioned below are some of the best eateries that fall in the budget eating category suitable for any backpacker,

1. Athithi: This is considered as the one of the finest restaurants in Coorg that serves the real south Indian delicacies in the district. It is not at all expensive and the price for a good meal is less than INR 100/- . This works well for any traveler on a tight budget. Food is served on fresh banana leaves, which give it a very indigenous touch of the area. One must try the dosa, vada, idli or all the three and finish the meal with a hot cup of freshly made filter coffee.

Do try some of the local delicacies, you will not regret it.

2. Popular Guru Prasad: The name may sound a bit different but their “Veg-Thali” is a true value for money as it is priced around INR 50/-. The place also serves breakfast, snacks and the meals at very reasonable rates.

3. East End Hotel: This is among those few restaurants in Coorg which serves an assortment of vegetarian staples of south India along with an option of local mutton and chicken dishes. A full mean platter can be had at less than INR 100/- here.

Now that food is also taken care of, time to go explore the town.
