But no donation isniecessary for those waating to hear about the Concepts and not with funds at present.

Those wondering why A.A. seems to rock along without too much conflict willlearn it is not by happenstance, that it is the result of intelligent planning andthe Concepts are one of the major contributing factors. One of our past Mew YorkTrustees describes our late Co-founder, Pill Wilson, as "an organizational genius".The Concepts are a product of his genius.

After understanding the Concepts one can be still more grateful that men ofsuch organizational genius and stature came along at the right time to devise away of life that saved ours.

Th® WfdTHE ONLY REQUIREMENT FOR

A.A. MEMBERSHIP IS A DESIRETO STOP DRINKING.

Isn't every organizationfor membership? V.'hythis privilege, to UThat's easy. Early members triad it the otherv/ay and it just didn't work. As toe Felloi/-s'vip \;as nearing its 10-year mark, tha officet .at served as headquarter "asked tha groups tolist tneir membership rules and send them in,"Bill W. recalled. "If all of these edicts hadbeen in force everywhere at once, iit v/ould havebeen practically impossible for any alcoholicto have ever joined A.A. About nine-tenthsof our oldest and best members could never havegot byl" So the rule books went out the v/indowand were replaced by one uncomplicated sentence:TRADITION THREE. But somebody may ask, isn'tthis Tradition itself a rule? It does stateONE requirement for membership. Let's readit again, and ask another question: VINOdetermines whether or not the nev/comer qualifies, whether he does want to stop drinking? Obviously, nobody except the newcomer himself:, everybodyelse simoly has to take his word for it. Infact, he doesn't even have to say it aloud. Andthat's fortunate for many of us who arrived atA.A. with only a halfhearted desire to stay sober. We are alive because the A.A. road stayed opento us.

ntltTe'; to havs ruleslid A.A. teclda to forego"inclusive..never exclusive'

. ''LIP SERVICE NOT ENOUGH""No man can consideRr himself a real

member of A.A. just because he doesn'tdrink. There is such a thing as havinga sober body, and a mind that retainsdrunken stupidity. The body will express lip service co the A.A. program, but the mind still wallows in an alcoholic quagmire. The physical sobrietyis used only as a cloak to cover thesame ccrruptive thinking and connivingthat was always present in the mind.Dishonesty of thought and action isjust as vicious in the sober man asin the drunken man. In fact, it hasmore foul odor, in the sober man.Becase the sober man has not the excuse of befuddled judgement.

Anyone addicted to this form ofhypocrisy is,still controlled byalcoholic thinking. He retains hisfalse pride. His complete selfishness, his super ego. He seeks no advise and rejects any that may be offeredHis moral and ethical standards arefabricated on a loom built to suithis own perverted specification, andthe cloak he weaves is as transparentas daylight. Mo one is deceived, except the deceiver, and even he musthave his moments when he must admithis life is a sham. The solution forhis problem is the same as it is forall of us."WE PRACTICE THESE PRINCIPLES IN ALL

OF OUR AFFAIRS."

Those interested please be at the Bldg. at 1:00 P.M.We need donations of Cakes, Cookies, ect. Central Office has tickets for sale. Manygreat prizes will be raffled off.

Harriet N. wished to correct Z* misstatements that were made at the March meeting. 1, The involving of an Audit service. 2. A law requiring the monthly audit ofa non-profit organization. The law requires a report and audit annually to protectour non-profit statis. Harriet read part of the Plans of Procedure regarding anyexpenditure that might involve reserve funds.

Joe W., chairman of the Business Committee also wanted to help set the recordsstraight. He did not make any such statement as to a law regarding a non-profit Organization. Secondly the outside auditing service was voted on several years agoand this committee is only following proceedures.

Dorothy H. stated the authority of Robert Rules of Order on Votes that areNull and Void. The vote of this cootvifi last month, granting a 157o raise to the OfficeManager, which might involve the use of our reserve funds, is in conflict with ourBylaws and therefore should be declared null and void. Dorothy made a motion thatthe vote be declared null and void and the raise be suspended until such time asthe approval of the groups is obtained. Seconded by Harriet M. Vote was then takenagain by council. Raise stands.NEW BUSINESS: A female member was elected to the Program Committee. Nancy L from No. Co

Harriet N. said "The cost of the monthly bookkeeping service has arisen ascompared to the once a year audit by an outside firm which is required by our bylaw, and which was the practice in the past years." Harriet M. made a motion that theBusiness CommTttee obtain three estimates from outside firms for the Annual Auditonly, and provide this information at the next Coordinating Council meeting. Dorothj? H.seconded the motion.

Cal asked Harriet if she would amend her motion to say thit "The Business Committeewould research an alternate means of obtaining economical means of bookkeepingservice and report back to this council. Harriet agreed to accept Cal's amendment.Joe Wc, Business Committee chairman would like what ever the council would likethe committee to do, put it in writing.

Pete M. objected to the use of the word auditing used, as it is a monthly accounting service. The audit is something different. He works for this type of firm andthey charge a large fee for an annual Audit as it takes two to three weeks to-complete.

TRADITION SEVEN*********

"Every A,A. group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contribtions."

Probably no A.A. tradition had the labor painsthis one did. In early times we were all broke. When you add to tis the habitual suppositionthat people ought to give money to alcoholicstrying to stay sober, it can be understoodwhy we thought we deserved a pile of foldingmoney. What great things A.A. would be ableto do with iti But oddly enough, people whohad money thought otherwise. They figured that-sober- it was high time we now paid our own waySo our fellowship stayed poor because it had to. h//u

yot/jPd/,hai^e-fcc

Otfcin

A.A. went throught a growing period. Our reactions to money prove this. As A.A. emergedfrom its in-fancy into adolescence, we swungfrom the idea we needed vast sums of money tothe notion th A.A. shouldn't have any.

Despite these misgivings, we had to recognize the fact that A.A. had to function.Meeting places cost something. To save wholeareas from turmoil, small offices had to beset up, telephones installed, and a few fulltime secretaries hired. Over many protest, these thing were accomplished. We sawthat if they weren't, the man coming in thedoor couldn't get a break.

A.A. presents a strange and refreshingspectacle. It points out that the irresponsible had become responsible, and thatby making financial independence part of itstradition, A.A. had revived an ideal thatits era had almost forgotten.

"Cartoon reproduced with the permission ofA.A. World Services, Inc.,"

Even though there are no dues or fees for A.A.membership, we come to realize that thepractical side of life involves a certainfiscal responsibility. Usually those who areable, soon start putting something in the"hat" for the necessitijs of A.A. life forexample coffee, rent, utilities etc.

NOVEMBER:IS TRADITIONS MONTH

FOR MORE YEARS THAN MOST OF US HAVE BEEN SOBER, AA MEMBERS AND GROUPS HAVE OBSERVEDNOVEMBER AS "TRADITIONS MONTH". TODAY, MORE THAN EVER BEFORE, IT IS IMPORTANT THAT ALLAA MEMBERS UNDERSTAND THE PRINCIPLES EXPRESSED IN OUR TWELVE TRADITIONS. THE INCREASINGPUBLIC CONCERN OVER ALCOHOLISM COMBINED WITH THE RECOGNIZED SUCCESS OF THE AA RECOVERYPROGRAM, OFFERS MEMBERS WIDER OPPORTUNITIES FOR SERVICE. AT THE SAME TIME, WE FACEMORE TEMPTATIONS THAT CAN LEAD TO AA DISUNITY AND DISASTER. AA"S CO FOUNDER, BILL W.,PUT IT LIKE THIS: "WE ALCOHOLICS ARE THE BIGGEST RATIONALIZERS IN THE WORLD. FORTIFIEDWITH THE EXCUSE THAT WE ARE DOING GREAT THINGS FOR AA, WE CAN RESUME OUR OLD ANDDISASTROUS PURSUIT OF PERSONAL POWER, PRESTIGE, PUBLIC HONORS AND MONEY. "AT THESAME TIME, BILL FREQUENTLY POINTED OUT THAT AAs COULD PROPERLY USE THEIR INSIGHT ANDEXPERIENCE OUTSIDE OF AA IN THE FIELD OF ALCOHOLISM. MANY GOOD AA MEMBERS DO JUST THAT.THEY "WEAR TWO HATS", BUT CAREFULLY AVOIKD CAPITALIZING ON MISCONCEPTIONS OF AA TOGAIN PERSONAL PROFITOR POSITION. THEY ARE ABLE TO WALK THIS DIFFICULT ROAD BECAUSETHEY ARE AS FAMILIAR WITH AA TRADITIONS AS THEY ARE WITH THE PROCEDURES AND GOALS OFTHE AGENCY THAT EMPLOYS THEM. OTHER, HOWEVER, VIOLATE AA TRADITIONS THROUGH IGNORANCE,INDIFFERENCE OR AMBITION. INNOCENT OR NOT, SUCHVIOLATIONS OF PRINCIPLES WEAKEN PUBLICCONFIDENCE IN AA AND CREATE DISUNITY IN OUR FELLOWSHIP. DURING TRADITIONS MONTH WE MUSTREMIND OURSELVES THAT THE TRADITIONS APPLY TO EACH ONE OF US AS TO OUR PERSONAL GROWTHAND TO OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS SOBER MEMBERS OF ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS.

LIVING SOBER "Even the words "stay sober"- let alone 1ive sober - offendedmany of us when we first heard such advice. Although we had done a lot of drinking, manfyof us never felt drunk, and were sure we almost never appeared or sounded drunkWe knew lots of people who drank more than we did We were not like that.

HOWEVER, after we learned some of the facts about the illness called alcoholism, our opinions shifted

Not drinking at all...becomes the basis of recovery from alcoholism....Livingsober turns out to be not at all grim, boring and uncomfortable, but rather somethingwe begin to enjoy and find much more exciting than our drinking days. We'll show youhow.

BILL W. "The human drama that unfolds in these pages is memorable fortwo reasons - one public and one private. It is the story of a man whose discoveryor vision, has changed the lives of a million people throughout the world (AldousHunxley called him "the greatest social architect of ouf time.") The story ofBill W. is a stirring spiritual odyssey through triumph, failure and rebirth, withvital meaning for men and women everywhere."

It's been a long time since I have written a letter to you. More years than I reallycare to remember. I excelled at telling you all I wanted. I don't remember everasking what YOU wanted, whether it'd be too much trouble or whether you thought Ideserved anything. After all these years' that's why I'm writing this letter nowSanta. At last I have what I want for Christmas. I'M SOBER.

I don't go around telling everyone about it. I don't think some folks would care anda lot more wouldn't get the drift. But you, Santa, I think you'd understand, and Ithink you'd be glad that one who for so long was one of God's problem children hasfound happiness. I joined A.A There truly isn't anything else I want forChristmas, except to keep sober and live this satisfying A.A.WAY

I can believe in you again, just as I can believe in the Holiday Season whose PatronSaint you are. I can believe in and revere the Christ whose birthday this is, the Godas I understand him, who made mine a sober life at last.

Have a lot of fun Santa, take care of yourself, bring a lot of happiness and love to
