    ThankyouforchoosingtoinvestigateEasternMichiganUniversity’s(EMU)CoordinatedProgramsinDietetics(CP).Weareveryproudofourhistoryasanaccreditedprogram,preparingstudentsforexcitingcareersasregistereddietitians(RD)/registereddietitiannutritionists(RDN).

    WeofferBachelorofScience,2ndBachelorofScienceandMasterofSciencedegreesinDieteticsleadingtotheRD/RDNcredential.Weofferbothacampusprogramandadistance-onlineprogram.

    Thedistance-onlineProgramwasthefirstfullydistanceCPaccreditedbytheAccreditationCouncilforEducationinNutritionandDieteticsoftheAcademyofNutritionandDietetics.

    ThegoalofthisInformationPacketisnottooverwhelmyou!ThegoalistoprovideasmuchinformationaspossibleinONElocation.Readingthroughthisoncewillgiveyouthebasicidea.Weencourageyoutoreadthepartsthatdonotmakesensemultipletimes.TheProgramco-Directors,ClinicalCoordinator,advisors,andfacultywelcomeyourquestionsandadvisingappointments.

    What’s New? Recent Change for the Dietetic Program

    CDR’sactiontochangethedegreerequirementfordietitianregistrationeligibilityfromabaccalaureatedegreetoagraduatedegreewillbeeffectiveJanuary1,2024.Forfurtherinformation,pleaseseetheCommissiononDieteticRegistration(CDR)cdrnet.org/graduatedegree.

    CheckwithyourCHHSorDieteticsadvisorforinformationaboutpotentialchangesfortheEMUprogram,pendingfurtherapproval.

    Nine Steps from Initial Contact to Coordinated Program Start

    1) Reviewthisdieteticsinformationpacket,thePhysicalandMentalRequirementsForm,theappropriatecoordinatedprogramapplication(distance-onlineorcampus),andallotherinformationontheEMUCatalogwebsite.

    a) EMUUndergraduateCatalogDieteticsMajor(BSand2ndBS)

    b) EMUCatalogDieteticsGraduate(MS)

    2) ApplytoEMU.*a) ProspectiveBSand2ndBSapplicantsforCP:ApplytoEMUasabachelor’sstudent,transferstudentor

    secondbachelor’s(ifyouholdacompletedbachelor’sdegreealready),dieteticintentmajor.ScheduleadvisingandtranscriptreviewasdirectedbyEMUAdmissionsaftertheynotifyyouofyouradmissionstatus.

    b) ProspectiveMSapplicantsforCP:ApplytoEMUasanon-degreeseekingstudent(withDieteticsIntent/IDTC)astheirmajor*,andonceadmitted,Admissionswillprovidefurtherdirectionforatranscriptreviewandinitialadvising.Ifgraduatecourseequivalencyisrequired,[email protected],toreceivetranscriptreviewformsandanexplanationofthegraduate-levelequivalencydeterminationprocess.

    c) StudentscannotbeacceptedtothegraduateschoolwithamajorindieteticsuntilacceptedintotheCP.Ifyoualreadyholdabachelor’sdegreeinDietetics,[email protected].

    d) EvenifnotplanningtotakeanycoursesatEMUpriortoapplying,studentsmustbeadmittedtoEMUpriortotranscriptreviewandpriortoapplyingtotheCP.

    3) PlanremainingcourseworkandvolunteerexperiencewithrespecttoCPapplicationdeadlines,acceptabilitybyEMUandtheDieteticsProgram,financialaidrequirements,etc.

    4) Continuetoreviewwebsiteandprograminformation(seeStep1)atleasttwiceperyear.ConnectwithCHHSAdvising(bachelorsandsecondbachelor’sCPseekingstudents)orProgramco-Director(MSCPseekingstudents)asneeded.

    5) Beginvaccineseriesfor5requiredvaccinestoapply,completeallseriesbyAugust1stpriortoprogramstart.

    6) ReviewandcompleteCPapplication(updatedversionpostedinsummereachyear)inordertobegintheprocessofcompletingtheapplicationand(ifonline)searchingforpreceptors(thisonlyappliestodistance-onlineapplicants).Thepreceptorsearchshouldstartatleast6-9months(ifnotearlier)beforeapplyingtotheCP.SubmitcompletedCPapplicationasdirectedonthewebsite.SeeCatalogfordetailsanddates.Rollingapplicationprocessbeginsafterthedeadline,untilcohortspotsarefilled.

    7) SubmitcompletedCPapplicationonorbeforeJanuarydeadline–seeapplicationforspecificdates.Notethatthereismorethanonetwopartanddeadline.

    Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Credential

    ThereareseveralroutestobecomingaRegisteredDietitian(RD)/RegisteredDietitianNutritionist(RDN).Toviewallroutespleasevisit:

    TobecomeaRD/RDN,astudentmust:

    • Completetheminimumofabachelor’sdegreeindietetics/nutritionorrelatedfieldfromAccreditationCouncilforEducationinNutritionandDietetics(ACEND)accreditedprogram,suchasEMU’sCoordinatedPrograminDietetics.

    • Completeaminimumof1200hoursofsupervisedpracticeexperience.

    • PasstheCDRRegistrationExaminationforDietitians/DietitianNutritionists.

    Instatesthatrequirecertification/licensure:

    • Applyforstatecertification/licensure(processvariesstatebystate).

    EMUoffersaCoordinatedProgram(CP)inDieteticsleadingtotheRD/RDNcredential.TheEMUCPoffersthedidactic(theory)courseworkconcurrentlywiththerequired1200hoursofsupervisedpracticeexperience.UponsuccessfulcompletionoftheCPatEMUandconferralofanEMUdegree,thestudentisissuedaverificationstatement*makingthemeligibletowritetheRegistrationExaminationforDietitiansthroughtheCommissiononDieteticRegistration(CDR).

    *VerificationStatement-ThisisthestatementprovidedbytheDieteticsProgramDirectortoCDRandtothestudentthatallowsthestudenttositfortheRegistrationExaminationforDietitians/DietitianNutritionists.ThisisonlyissuedafterthestudentsuccessfullycompletestheCP,receivestheirdegreeandachievesallskillsneededtobeanentry-leveldietitian.

    TheCommissiononDieteticRegistration(CDR)actiontochangethedegreerequirementfordietitianregistrationeligibilityfromabaccalaureatedegreetoagraduatedegreewillbeeffectiveJanuary1,2024.Forfurtherinformation,pleaseseetheCommissiononDieteticRegistration(CDR)website.

    Program Overview

    Business Entrepreneurship Concentration.

    TheEasternMichiganUniversityCoordinatedProgramsinDietetics(CP)haveaBusinessEntrepreneurship(BE)concentrationdesignedtobegindevelopmentoftheentry-leveldepthnecessaryforfutureproficiencyinbusinessentrepreneurship.TheProgramchosetheconcentrationarea15+yearsagobecauseEMUisdedicatedtocommunityoutreach.Dieteticsstudents,underthedirectionofanRD/RDN,staffthecampusEagleNutritionServices(ENS).Distance-onlinestudentsgainexperienceinbusinessentrepreneurshipbycompletingsupervisedpracticeexperiencehourswithaprivatepracticeRD/RDN.AllCPstudentsareabletogainvaluable

    skillsrelatedtobusinessmanagementincludingcustomerservice,publicspeaking,education,counseling,codingandbilling

    TheProgramintroducestheBEconcentrationduringDTC371andDTC571NutritionTherapyIIExperience,exploresthetopicin-depthinDTC459andDTC659DevelopmentoftheEntrepreneurialDietitian,andreinforcesthetopicduringDTC432andDTC631CommunityNutritionExperience.TheProgramdevelopedDTC459andDTC659DevelopmentoftheEntrepreneurialDietitianasthein-depthcoursesrelatedtotheBEconcentrationandrequiresitinthesummerbetweenthefirstandsecondyearoftheCP.Thecourseincludesthewritingofabusinessplan,interviewwithanutritionentrepreneur,reactionpapers,andweeklydiscussions.Inaddition,DTC659includesthedevelopmentofawebsitewiththreeblogentries.

    TherearemanyBEopportunitiesforRDs/RDNsandtheBEconcentrationfillsaneedforstudentswhoaspiretobeentrepreneurs.Inadditiontocoursework,theCPhasincorporatedadditionalopportunitiestolearnaboutentrepreneurship.Forexample,EMUhastheCenterforEntrepreneurshiponcampuswithanannualconference,businessplancompetition,andelevatorpitchcompetitionforstudents.TheProgramhasalsosponsoredentrepreneurialworkshopsandspeakers.

    ThetwoBEcompetenciesareasfollows:

    BECRDN6.1 Studentswillcustomizeproducts,programs,andservicestosatisfycustomerneedsanddesires.

    BECRDN6.2 Studentswilldevelopabusinessplanthatincludesstart-upcosts,operatingcosts,estimatedincome,andsalaries.

    Technology Support and Online Course Information

    TheProgramrecommendsthatallpotentialapplicantsreviewtheEMU’swebsitefortechnologyrequirements.StudentsapplyingtothecampuscohortwillhaveatleastoneonlinecoursepersemesterwhileintheDieteticsProgram,andthedistance-onlinecohortwilltakeallProgramcoursesonline.

    CanvasistheEMUonlineplatform.AtutorialisavailableonceCanvasaccessisprovided.

    StudentsarerequiredtohaveuseofacomputerwithInternetaccess,additionalwebcam,computermicrophoneaccessories(ifnotwithincomputer/notworkingwithincomputer),andscanningequipment,inadditiontorecordingandphoto-taking/uploadingdevices.

    Answerstocommonlyaskedquestions:

    1) Distance-onlinestudentsALWAYSpayin-statetuition,nomatterwheretheylive.Onlinecourseshaveanextrafeepercredit.UtilizetheEMUtuitioncalculatorontheStudentBusinessServiceswebsiteemich.edu/sbs/basics/tuition/calculator.phptoestimatetotalcost.StudentscanfindadditionaltuitioninformationinthisdocumentandontheEMUwebsite.

    2) OnlinecoursesatEMUareprimarilyasynchronous.Thismeansthat,generallyspeaking,studentswillnotneedtobeattheircomputeronaspecificdayataspecifictime.However,thisisatthediscretionofthecourseinstructor.

    3) Eachinstructorchoosestheirmethodofpresentingmaterial.Examplesinclude:podcasts,recordedvoiceoveraPowerPointpresentation,andlecturevideos.

    TheDieteticsProgramfacultystronglyrecommendsthatstudentstakeatleastoneonlinecoursepriortoapplyingtotheCoordinatedProgram.

    Curriculum Information

    Full Time Status (BS and MS Degree)

    TheCPatEasternMichiganUniversity(EMU)arefull-timeprogramsonly.ThisappliestoboththeBachelorofScienceandtheMasterofSciencedegrees.

    TheProgramDirectorandCPfacultysequencedthecoursestoallowforprogressionoflearningintheleastamountoftimenecessarytocompleteallcompetenciesandskills,andtomeetthe1200hoursofsupervisedpracticeexperiencesrequiredbytheAccreditationCouncilforEducationinNutritionandDietetics(ACEND).StudentscancompletetheBSdegreein20monthsandtheMSdegreein24months.

    Eachsemester,studentsarecompletingdidacticcourseworkconcurrentlywithsupervisedpracticeexperiences.Studentsareintheirsupervisedpracticeexperiencesitesasfollows:

    FirstYear-Fall(24hoursperweek)Winter(16hoursperweek)

    SecondYear-Fall(16-24hoursperweek)Winter(32hoursperweek)

    Thesehoursareinadditiontoafullloadofclassesof12-15credithours.Supervisedpracticeexperiencehoursaregenerallyduringnormalbusinesshours(7:00am-7:00pm)however,theyareatthediscretionofthepreceptorandmayvary.Studentsneedtobeflexibleintheirscheduletoassurethehourscoincidewiththepreceptors’abilitytosupervisethestudent.Studentsarerequiredtohaveuseoftheirowntransportationandareresponsiblefortheirownappropriateautoinsurance(whichcoversthemtoandfromsupervisedexperiencesites)andareresponsiblefortransportationto/fromallpracticeexperiencesandmeetings.

    Itisdifficulttoworkfull-timewhilecompletingtheCPatEMU.Ifstudentsdesireemployment,theneveningsandweekendsworkbest.

    Thethesisoptioninvolvesaresearchstudythatisplanned,executed,andwritteninthesisformat.Thisoptionincludesthreeclasses(sixcredithours).Eachstudentmusthaveacommitteeofatleasttwopeople;thethesischairmusthaveaPhDandbeEMUfaculty.Morespecifically,thethesisconsistsofaresearchstudythatrequires5chaptersdetailingthestudy.Statisticalanalysisistheresponsibilityofthestudent.Chapters1-3areaproposalofthestudy,writteninThesisI.Chapter1istheintroduction,chapter2isthereviewofliterature,andchapter3isthemethodology(howyouwilldothestudy).ThesisIIinvolvesdatacollectionandstatisticalanalysisofthedata.Chapters4(Results)and5(Conclusions)arewritten.ThesisIIIinvolvesdisseminationoftheresearchthroughaposterpresentationoranarticleinapeer-reviewedjournal.

    Non-ThesisResearch(6hrs)

    Theresearchoptionisathree-classseries(sixcredithours)workingwithoneEMUprofessoronaprojectthatthestudentandprofessoragreeon.Morespecifically,youmayfollowthesameformatasthethesiswithoutthestatistics.Youmayalsochoosesomethingcompletelydifferent.Forexample,onestudenthasdesignedamoduletotrainfuturestudentsonautism.Inaddition,studentsareguidedtowardsubmittingmanuscriptstopeer-reviewedjournals.

    Aconsortiumagreementisawrittencontractbetweenoneormoreeligibleschools,allowingqualifyingstudentstocompletecoursesatdifferentinstitutionsduringthesamesemesterforthepurposeofcompletingadegree.Theagreementallowsastudenttoregisterforclassesata“HOSTSCHOOL”andhavethosecreditscounttowardthatstudent’sdegreehereatEMU(the“HOMESCHOOL”).

    Theconsortiumagreementisonlyusedforthepurposesoffederalfinancialaid.EMUisthe“HOMESCHOOL”andiswherethestudentmustbeinadegree-seekingprogram.EMU’sroleintheagreementistoadministerthefinancialaidprocessbycertifyingthestudent’scombinedenrollmentstatusandCostofAttendancefortheconsortiumsemester.

    WesupportmembersoftheUSmilitaryandwelcomeapplicationsfromthoseinthemilitaryorinmilitaryfamilies.Dueto[3] possibilityofrelocationatshortnotice,studentsinthemilitaryfacechallengeswhensecuringpreceptorsforSupervisedPracticeExperiences.Wedoourbesttoassistmilitarystudentsintheeventofamove,butthestudentmustcompletetheprograminamannercongruentwithouraccreditationfromACEND.Wehavehadsomestudentsinmilitaryfamiliessuccessfullycompleteourprogram.Specialconsiderationsinclude:

    1. Whenapplying,studentsneedtosecurepreceptorsfortheentirefirstyearandsecondyearclinical,evenifunsureastowheretheywillbelocatedwhentheprogrambegins.Itisbesttobestraightforward

    2. Preceptorsatamilitarybasehospitaland/ormedicalcenterareexcellentchoices.TheycanbestatesideorlocatedatUSmilitarybasesoverseas(whereitisconsideredUSsoil).WehaveaffiliationagreementswithafewUSmilitarybases/hospitalsinthiscountry.Wedonothaveanyyetoverseas.AmilitaryaffiliationagreementbetweenthefacilityandEMU’sLegalAffairscantakeayeartobefinalized.Incaseofamove,whenasemesterisduetostart,tryingtogetintoanothermilitarysiteforExperiencesisnotpossible,unlessEMUalreadyhasanagreementwiththefacility.Therewillnotbetimetocompleteanewaffiliationagreement.Instead,thestudentneedstoseekotherstatesidesites.

    3. AllExperiencestypicallycannotbecompletedatamilitarybasesitealone.Specifically,thismayincludeExperiencesneededinDTC371LongTermCare,DTC431-WICandPrivatePracticeandthefinalDTC451FoodserviceSystems.Iflivingoverseas,thismeansthestudentwouldhavetocomestatesidetocompletetheseExperiences.WearenotaccreditedforoverseasstudentstocompleteanyExperiencesoffUSsoil.

    4. Whenmoving,itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytoinformDianeReynoldsASAPandsecurenewpreceptors.Thiscanbestressful,especiallyifasemesterisunderwayandthestudenthasacourse-loadtokeepupwith.Wecanprovidealistofsiteswehaveagreementswithinthenewlocation(ifthereareany),butthatdoesnotmeanthepreceptoriswillingandabletohaveanotherstudentcompleteSupervisedPracticeExperienceswiththem.Inaddition,thestudentneedstodeclinetheiroriginalpreceptorsinaprofessionalmanner.

    5. Inordertoassistthestudentwhoneedstoarrangenewpreceptors/sites,DianeReynoldscancommunicatebyphonewithpotentialpreceptorsthestudenthasmadecontactwith,togivemoreinformation.ProvidingpotentialpreceptorswiththerelatedcoursematerialsoftenhelpstheRDmakeadecision.Mostconversationsofthisnatureendpositively.
