Few things are as concerning as finding or smelling mold in your residence. For some people, mold can trigger an allergic reaction and lead to respiratory problems, especially for those with compromised immune systems. For you to have a healthiest home possible, it’s important for you to prevent mold and promptly control it if it appears.

Molds are living organisms that grow and thrive on moisture. To prevent their formation, keep your home dry. Promptly fix leaks and quickly eliminate any other source of wetness in your home. Use a dehumidifier or air conditioner to keep your home’s humidity level below 50 percent. Two areas that tend to be “wetter” than others are bathrooms and kitchens. Make sure these areas are properly ventilated.

Mold has a pretty distinctive musty smell, which can help you locate any problems. You can also look for mold in high-moisture areas, like around faucets or showers. Water stains, odd coloring or fuzzy growth on surfaces are also common signs of mold.

The amount of mold you find will determine your next steps. If you find mold in an area smaller than 10 square feet, you can usually safely remedy the situation yourself. To do that, fix water problems as quickly as possible. Completely dry all areas. Use detergent, water, gloves and a scrubbing brush to remove mold from hard surfaces and then dry the area. You may have to discard porous materials, like ceiling tiles, if they get mold on them as mold can grow inside of those surfaces. If your moldy surface is larger than 10 square feet, you should consult the Environmental Protection Agency’s guide, “Mold Remediation in Schools and Commercial Buildings,” which is available online at https://www.epa.gov/mold/mold-remediation-schools-and-commercial-buildings-guide. If you hire a professional to help you with mold removal, check references and make sure they follow government guidelines for proper mold removal.

Mold Prevention and Removal

The American Heart Association has recently come out with a new statement addressing the problem of inactive children, more specifically screen time and the frequency of childhood obesity.

According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, it is estimated that children and adolescents are sedentary, or not active, an average of seven hours per day. This survey also found that the amount of time children are sedentary increases as they get older.

During these sedentary hours, most kids are watching screens. Screen time or times that children are sitting, are among the most notable factors for obesity. Screen time was also seen to increase with children’s age.

Screen time has become a part of our everyday lives and has increasingly become a part of a child’s life. This study by the AHA found that screen time leads to weight gain and ultimately childhood obesity.

Although it’s not yet clear how much screen time we should allow children, there is enough evidence to suggest that sedentary behavior and screen time should be reduced however possible.

With this new information and statistics, it is important to encourage children to be active. We can start by suggesting different activities to our children, and perhaps put a limit on television or computer time after school.

Outdoor play and face-to-face interaction with other children is highly suggested. Overall, the more active our children are, the better their health will be.

I love my job! I know I have said it before but what a great opportunity to work with awesome people that support and dig in to work to support their community. The Extension Homemakers just finished a successful fundraising mission and it was done through teamwork. Such an amazing group. I also have the opportunity to give back to the community through continuing education and assisting with helping community members find and use the resources needed to improve health and quality of life. And then there are those terrific children at North Middletown Elementary that make me feel so special. Once again we discussed and practiced social manners, family manners, table setting and etiquette with Ms. Katie Sparks 3rd graders. As a culminating project they invited guest to an elegant breakfast where they had set the table, practiced their manners and mastered the art of appropriate conversation. Thank you for all these opportunities!

Happy April! As with each month of the year, April brings us many special events for our Homemaker Clubs.

I want to encourage every member to attend our Annual Bourbon County Meeting on Thursday, April 25th, at Legion Park. Our meal sounds delicious and there will be some very exciting things happening – so please come be a part of this event. I also encourage you to sit with different folks other than your regular club members! Make a new friend or two and let’s build unity among our members. I am sure Bourbon County has the finest group of ladies of any county in our state! I appreciate each of you.

We encourage every club to be very creative as they think of things to offer in our Helping Hands Auction. This is one of the easiest fund-raising events we do, but to keep it lively, we do need to ‘think outside the box’! We need your auction sheets by Monday, April 22nd.

There are many ways to volunteer this month, so look closely throughout the newsletter and help us as often as you can.

A very special ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone who helped make our March 2nd fund-raising event such a success. You gals are the best!

Have a blessed Easter as you celebrate this special season with family and friends. Bette Edwards, [email protected] Bourbon County Extension Homemakers President 859.707.9260

Cleaning for a Food Safe Kitchen

A critical part of healthy eating is keeping foods safe. Individuals in their own homes can reduce contaminants and keep food safe to eat by following safe food handling practices. Here are some cleaning tips to keep your kitchen food safe: • Clean sweep refrigerated foods once a week. At least once a week, throw out refrigerated foods that should no longer be eaten. Cooked leftovers should be discarded after 4 days; raw poultry and ground meats, 1 to 2 days. • Sanitize surfaces. Surfaces should be washed with hot, soapy water. A solution of 1 tablespoon of unscented, liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water can be used to sanitize surfaces. • Keep appliances clean. Clean the inside and the outside of appliances. Pay particular attention to buttons and handles where cross-contamination to hands can occur.
