the tin Shed RattlersSince 1971 The Original Downside and District Municipal Tin Shed Rattlers (With Vocal Refrain) have been entertaining crowds from the Riverina area and beyond, with a wonderful selection of folk songs, entertainment and music, from Ire-land, Scotland, England, America and of course, Australia. fa-cebook.com/pages/The-Tin-Shed-Rattlers/377696119011289.

The Tin Shed Rattlers provide a top night of fair dinkum bush dancing. All dances are called and no prior experi-ence could be an advantage! It is always an action packed and friendly night of bush dancing, socialising and fine music. In winter, there are open fires blazing. Tea and coffee are always available and someone generally brings along some freshly baked scones or other delights. So bring friends, family or just come solo, for a great night. The hall opens 7pm, and the first dance is at 8pm. We hope to see you there, if you're in the Wagga Wagga region on the first Saturday of the month!

There are directions for getting to the Downside Hall in the 'About' section of the Facebook page. Enq, Noel 6928 5541 (H) or 6925 4800 (W).

Coolgrass Very cool band delight audiences with their hilarious take on bluegrass, are favourites throughout Australia & New Zealand.

They've been featured at Australia’s National Folk Festi-val, the Auckland Folk Festival, Port Fairy, the Harrietville Bluegrass Convention, the Redlands Bluegrass Festival, the Fairbridge Folk Festival, the Tamworth Music Festival and many more, plus many folk clubs, wineries, town halls, arts councils, pubs and so forth across Australia and New Zealand. They've recorded four CDs – Toad Rage (2004), Jaguar Break-down (2006), Never Put The Banjo Down (2009) & Most Peculiar (2012).

Jim Golding (banjo, vocals) challenges the traditionalists with bebop-banjo, rock’n roll-banjo, bossa-banjo, Mozart-banjo, etc and he also belts out many a fine bluegrass break. Among Jim’s other claims to fame are his extraordinary parodies and other comic numbers, such as “The Banjo Picker from Hell”. Jim is also frequently called upon to conduct workshops on the banjo at conventions and festivals around the country.

Bruce Packard (mandolin, vocals) has recorded and trav-elled widely with “New Dogs Old Tricks”, folked-up jazzers “Straight Ahead” and trad bluegrass band “Sleight of Hand”. He’s equally comfortable on double bass and mandolin, and plays mandocello in Melbourne’s mandolin orchestra, Concor-dia. He has composed and recorded music for film and stage, and also finds time for a bit of acting and sound engineering.

Angus Golding (double bass, vocals) is the youngest member of Coolgrass, but he already has a wealth of music experience under his wing, including leading the a capella group D’Caf, singing in the Da Capo Singers, playing keyboard in heavy rock groups, & doing music-for-children shows around the state. An-gus brings extra strength (& mischief) to the vocal harmonies.

Doug Wallace (guitar, dobro, vocals) has one of the longest histo-ries of any Australian (well, Scottish) bluegrass musician, having been part of the Hayes Brothers (generally regarded as Australia’s first bluegrass band) not to mention many other top outfits over the past few decades, including “The Promised Band”, “The Mel-bourne Bluegrass Band” & the “Blue Grass Souls”.

Appearing at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Folk Club, 19th September.

turning Wave says ‘Yes to Yass’2012 saw the Turning Wave Festival move to its new home in the NSW country of Yass, NSW and what a great festival it was. A big line-up of great acts from the four corners of the country filled the concert venues kept audiences enthralled and the pubs were fairly ringing with sessions. Banjo Paterson Park was filled to overflowing with market stalls, festival goers and the blackboard stage provided a musical backdrop to the festive atmosphere. Quite frankly, Yass didn’t know what had hit it at first but very soon warmed to the vibe and joined in with gusto.

19-21 September this year will see the festival return and Yass will again come alive to the sound of music when the 9th Turn-ing Wave festival brings folk enthusiasts flocking from far and near. The air of excitement in the lead-up to the 2014 festival is palpable and the level of support from both Council and the townsfolk has been wonderful and grows stronger all the time. Turning Wave is now officially supported as one of the town’s major events by both the Council and the Business Chamber.

Yass has a strong connection with Irish Australia and so truly reflects the ethos of the festival. A significant number of local families have links to the Irish orphan girls brought out in the wake of the Great Famine.

The town - only 40mins from Canberra and under 3 hrs from Sydney - is an ideal location for the festival with all the action taking place within a couple of blocks. A wealth of character-filled venues brings real atmosphere to the concerts, workshops and sessions which fill the town over the weekend. The old Lovat chapel at St Augustine’s church (recently refurbished) with its beautiful stained glass windows, slate roof and original tallow-wood floors dates from 1838 and will be an outstanding venue for the 2014 festival. Aesthetically, the town has come a long way from being an infamous bottleneck on the old Hume Highway and is now an impressive showcase of heritage buildings, tree-lined streets decked out in spring blossoms and all the warmth and bustle of a thriving country community.

The town boasts five motels and three hotels but there is also plenty of camping space with the Council granting use of Joe O’Connor Park and its facilities for campers. The park lies on the banks of the Yass River, just a short walk over the river weir from the festival hub. The Yass Valley Visitor Information Centre (02 6226 2557) keeps tabs on what’s available and can advise who has vacancies. They can also advise on places to eat in Yass which offer a great range of cuisine.

This year the town’s three pubs will play host to sessions and workshops, while the Memorial Hall, Soldiers’ Club and the historic Lovat Chapel will host concerts, ceilis and master classes with this year’s top performers including overseas guest artist, Tricia Hastings. This year’s festival will also include a Junior Fleadh (music event) which will give kids both the opportunity to learn music from more experienced players and to perform what they have learned on stage as part of the festival program.

The festival runs concurrently with the Spring School of Irish Music, which offers master classes where musicians can improve their techniques and learn new tunes from top festival artists. (Registration for this is separate to the main festi-val and does require a moderate level of skill.)

Already the festival has announced year’s artists including singer-songwriter Gallie - all the way from Dublin. Senor Cabrales, Saoirse, Sunas and the Rebecca Moore Band together with a host of others will travel from all points of the coun-try to Yass to be on the program as well as local performers, Vague. There will also be blackboard venues where anyone can register to perform and be part of the festival entertainment.

A truly fabulous weekend is ensured with a great line-up of acts, markets, sessions and a truly sup-portive community who are looking forward to the event.

Ticket information, registration for the Junior Fleadh and further information is available at turningwave.org.au or find us on Facebook!
