COOL AND HIP AT ANY AGE!
A A HIPSTERHIPSTER DAY DAY OUTINGOUTING IN IN THE CITYTHE CITY(BRIDGING GENERATION GAPS IN A VERY HIP WAY!)
The Westside Local Restaurant, Roasterie Coffee Tour,
& Shopping at A Westside Storey
Every generation has it's own uniqueness and
subcultures that separates it a little bit from
the generations proceeding it. In the 1950's there
were the Beatniks and Greasers. The 1960's brought
us the generation of the Hippies which created the
subculture generation in the 1970's of Punk Rockers
and Discos. The 1980's brought us the Yuppies and
Techies, which spawned the subculture generation
of the Grungers and Alternatives in the 1990's. But,
in the era of the new millennium what subculture
has surfaced for this generation? What are their
interests? As with all of the previous generations the
subculture is created as a response to the
mainstream ideologies and cultural mores that
shape and influence the subculture. So, what is the
subcultural generation of the Millennials? The
Hipsters of course! You may be asking yourself right
now, what is a Hipster? Well, good chance if you
have grandchildren or great grandchildren between
the ages of 25 and 35 then you already know some
Hipsters, or at least you know someone that might!
For the purposes of not deluding ourselves, but for
the most convenient of definitions...a Hipster is: a
subculture of Millennials who associate with
independent/alternative music, a varied non-
mainstream fashion sense of vintage and... (please

SPECIAL EVENTS | THE BUZZ | OUT AND ABOUT AND MUCH MORE!
ThrivingNo doubt during dinner time, during
Happy Hour, or at the Resident
Birthday parties you have heard the
majestic melodies being tickled
across the ivories by the talented
pianist, our own Resident Bill
Harkins! Bill is a very talented
musician and accomplished pianist.
He has studied music in some well-
known music schools in New York
City and has studied musical theory
and improvisation as well. In addition to his illustrious music
career he has also spent some time selling pianos for a living also,
but he must admit that he enjoyed his time as much or more
playing some wonderful pianos on the sales floor like the
Bösendorfer and Steinway pianos, which he would call two of the
most wonderful instruments ever created! Undoubtedly Bill Harkins
is a very gifted and talented musician, but most of all we all have
come to appreciate the opportunities when he shares his musical
proclivities with all of the Residents and Associates. The
opportunity to set and relax to some wonderful tunes and melodies
with Bill is a great time indeed, as many Residents would whole
heartedly agree! This opportunity for him to keep tickling the
ivories is just another rehearsal for him, but for the rest of us it is a
great occasion for us to listen and enjoy live music. You can hear
an ol' favorite tune or melody on a cd, tape, or radio, but nothing
ever compares to hearing the music live, and for that we are truly
thankful to have a wonderful Resident like Bill Harkins. This month
we would like to acknowledge you for your gift and generously
sharing it with us all to enjoy. Thanks for thriving through music!

"A HIPSTER DAY OUTING IN THE CITY" (Continued...)
thrift store-bought clothing, possessing progressive
political views/civil rights issues, organic food eating,
sustainable local food sourcing, anti-consumerism, and
interested in minimalist living. These are just a few of
the many issues that define the Hipsters. Many
Millennials relate directly to the Hipster subculture
either entirely or in part. How do you identify a Hipster
you may ask...well not as easily as a Hippy or a Punk
Rocker, but rather they dress with a nostalgic/eclectic
sense of fashion that are made by local independent
commerce or come from thrift/second hand stores. The
Hipster culture is primarily concerned with reusing,
repurposing, recycling, and reducing our carbon
footprint that is created by mass consumerism and
waste. Eating healthy and organic is essential to
Hipsters, which this has spawned an interest in the
local Farm-to-Table Food Movement, which is adopted
by many restaurants, even in Kansas City! Why have
we spent two pages talking about Hipsters...here's
why! We are going on February 18th Thrift Store
shopping and it is our hope that many will join us in
buying clothes to dress up as Hipsters on our January
25th outing, which will include an outing to Kansas
City to visit some of our local Hipster culture favorites
like: A Westside Local Restaurant (a farm-to-table
restaurant sourcing all of its food from local Missouri
farmers), A Westside Storey (a completely local store
with items made right here in Kansas City), and a tour
of The Roasterie Coffee (a local fair trade and
organic coffee roaster), great coffee is essential to all
Hipsters...sorry ma...not your Folgers! On January 25th
join us dressed as Hipsters to tour the city in a hip and
cool way! This is a great way to connect with a young
generation and be hip at any age! Have fun with us!
