Electric Bus Service & Car Share
for Coochie The Progress Association has been
incredibly busy working on solving the
problem of transport and parking issues on
the island and at Victoria Point. At the
time of print the latest Fact Sheet issued
by Progress was as follows – provided by
Russell Austerberry:-
Bus Service Progress is aiming for an all-electric 12-
seater vehicle operated by volunteers. The
service will operate like a taxi by meeting
all peak-hour ferries and also offer door to
door trips via bookings.
To bring this bus to the island, Progress
will need Operator Accreditation; …/2

Artisan Collective By Rachael Krinks & Lianne Counsell
Our human impulse to express
ourselves takes many forms. Painting
canvases, designing and building
unique homes, photographing the
natural beauty of our island, our sea and
sky and the creatures that share our
world, to building and customising
vintage and replica hot rod cars, to
making each coffee a customised work
of art. I attended the launch of a new

Progress Association Fact
sheet: Bus Service and Car
Share Cont’d from page1
..all drivers will need Driver Authorisation, and the
bus itself must be a road-registered vehicle inspected
twice yearly to ensure it’s in good nick. We’ll need
plenty of volunteers for driving, admin and
maintenance; some of these may come from Work for
the Dole scheme.
To get a ‘good vibe’ all-electric option which drops
running costs and doesn’t pollute or make much
noise… will cost more. This means buying the bus
will likely be a combination of grant money (eg
Gambling Community Fund) and some investment or
support from locals. (See the survey).
To run the bus we’ll need to charge a full fare at
somewhere between $1.50 and $2.50. Initially it will
operate in morning and afternoon peak through the
week, and if enough drivers come on board we would
then introduce weekend service.
This will all take a while – first the survey, then
funding, accreditation, volunteers, commissioning and
electric fit-out – over a year to organise all that. If
there’s interest – we’ll get cracking. For further info
please call Roger 0488 528 863 or Russell 0423 860
848.
Car Share Club If you use a mainland car 3 x a week or less, it is likely
cheaper to hire a share car. Aaron from SMBI Car
Club (https://smbicarclub.com/v2/) could expand to
the Victoria Point Jetty lower car park. Follow the link
for more info, and send him an email to express
interest.

Written by Heather Smith; Secretary
It was wonderful to be able to present the First
Responders with a cheque for $2500 towards the
next defibrillator for our island. The money has been
raised thanks to you all who bought raffle tickets or
attended our Quiz nights Thank You.
Other news includes a request to Council for more
bench seating along our foreshore which has been
acknowledged, and our parking dilemma which
needs to be understood by all concerned both
residents and council.
The Easter market had an information display to
discuss these issues and provide feedback enabling
us to present opinions to council. We hope you took
the time to note your thoughts.
All Progress meeting are open to anyone who wishes
to express their thoughts on issues that would benefit
the island, meeting dates are on the community
notice board. See pages 1 & 2 for Bus News.

On mornings when the Shed is open, men can often be
found with a coffee in hand (rather than a drill), simply
talking quietly and sharing stories about the challenges
and joys of manhood.
In fact, looking back to the genesis of the Men's Shed
movement, this model of men engaging with men was a
large component of the birthing of the Men's Shed
organisation. It was seen as a partial solution to the
growing sense of isolation reportedly experienced by
many men and to the rising tide of male suicide, a
phenomenon which has certainly touched most people,
especially in smaller communities such as
Coochiemudlo Island.
Now that we have a place and a space, men of all ages
are welcome to become members. No skills are required,
apart from the capacity to respect others.
Finally, the Shed is alcohol and smoke free, but there's
always coffee, there's always soft-drink, and there's
always companionship.
Isolation is over right now, if that's how you want it.
You can find contact details and other information
at our website at coochiemensshed.com.
Men’s Shed News By Peter Kroll
The Coochie Men’s Shed has now been completed,
we have finally moved in, and there are various
activities taking place on the premises. There are
things being renovated, wheelchairs and other items
undergoing maintenance for the Coochie Progress
Association and other activities are arising as we
become more comfortable with our new home.
While there are limitations, we will slowly discover
what is possible within the space, taking into account
that the conditions of occupancy for the site include a
total prohibition on the use of power tools.
One thing that has been possible is for us to
coordinate a Sausage Sizzle on the days that the Op
Shop opens for business. Although this is not
of enormous financial benefit to the Shed, yet it has
been useful as a support for the Op Shop and in
providing an opportunity and a reason for men to
gather and engage with our community.
One welcome development is that the Shed is be-
coming a drop-in destination for men on the island.
Op Shop Report By Marion O’Garey
We are now off and running in our new premises and we
thank the Redland City Council for supplying this great
site. Also would like to thank the Redland Foundation –
Councilor’s Small Grants for funding of shelving, mats
and other little bits and pieces that helped to get the
show on the road.
There are numerous volunteers that need to be thanked
for all their time and effort in making the Op Shop the
success that it is and will continue to be a success
because of them, you know who you are and we
THANK YOU.

Why island life?
Almost 16 years ago, Adam and I were
pregnant with our first son Joel and decided that
the Gold Coast was no longer the place for us to
live and raise a family. We knew we wanted to
be by the water but we didn't mind (too much)
the location. We looked from Cairns to Coffs
Harbour but we just couldn't find the right
place that ticked all the boxes.
Adam’s brother Mark at a similar time was also
home shopping and knew that we were too.
One day Mark rang Adam and said "Mate, you
have to come and check this place out! It’s a
little Island called Coochiemudlo and you can
only get there by boat. It’s so cool".
Needless to say we were here in a flash, booked
Denise Foley in for a tour of the Island to see
what was available and low and behold
we found our home. It was looking a little sad
when we originally bought it but over the last
15 years there has been lots of love put into our
home and lots of renovations (which are still
ongoing - 15 years later). It was one of the best
decisions we ever made.
Best thing about living on Coochie?
That's a tough question because there are so
many great things about living on Coochie.
One of the best things though by far are the
amazing people that live here. We're a pretty
special bunch. …../8

This community has been here and supported the
boys and I through some of our toughest times. I
know that if I didn't live here, the last 4 years would
have been a lot tougher than they have been.
Besides that, other benefits would have to be the
beaches, the wetlands, paddling around the island,
and walking around the island. The social circles
formed, the Friday night dinners, summer BBQ's and
winters in front of the fire with a glass of red wine
(even if it is only for about a month)....the list goes
on and on.
Best thing about parenting on the island?
Would have to be that my children are fortunate
enough to have grown up here and since they were
babies have had an amazing childhood. There are
not many places left (I think) that allow children to
be children in a safe environment. My boys get to
climb trees, get red, muddy feet from squishing
through the low tide at red rock, swim in the water,
go
crabbing, fishing, ride their bikes/skateboards and
scooters up the street, run in the rain and enjoying the
way they spend their days.
I love the saying "It takes a village to raise a child" and I
truly believe that Coochie is an amazing place to raise
children for that reason. There are always people
watching and caring.....I've had the phone calls saying
"Hey Jodie, are you aware that Joel/Reef is doing
...............? 'Just thought I'd let you know". I say "thank
you" to those people who are helping me keep my
children safe. So parenting here is pretty good.
Hardest thing about parenting on the island?
Getting them home by dark in the summer time.
I’m most proud of ...
Joel and Reef. Their resilience, strength and courage is
heartwarming.
I’m most grateful for...
I have a lot to be grateful for. I have a great family, I
have amazing friends, I live in a supportive community. I
have a roof over my head, I can feed and clothe my
children, we are healthy. I love my job and people I work
with. I've lived an incredible life, travelled the ……/15

Fishing News
By Michael des David
Fishing report: What a summer it’s been with an
abundance of fish being caught around
Coochiemudlo. I am looking forward to the cooler
weather and catching snapper and tailor. The beach
fishing has improved in the evenings and good size
snapper are being caught on a rising tide. The best
bait for catching snapper is a piece of fresh squid.
Use the smallest sinker you can to cast out the bait.
Don’t use a swivel but run the sinker above the hook;
this will allow you to improve your casting distance.
The tailor will be making their presence known and
an unweighted pilchard on a set of gang hooks will
deliver a fish or two off the eastern beach of
Coochiemudlo. When the westerly wind blows - it is
tailor fishing time so even if it’s blowing 15-20 km
knots, you can still go out fishing. A fresh fillet of
tailor tastes good if the fish is well bled. Always
bleed out any tailor you intend to keep for the table.
The bigger bream will also be around our shores and
give a good account of themselves when caught. I
tend to release all bream I catch because they are a
slow growing species and it takes about nine years
for a bream to reach the legal size limit. So, if you
can please limit your catch of bream so that the
overall population will increase in size and that
means the younger fishers can catch a legal size
bream to take home for dinner.
So to wrap up, this month’s target species are
snapper, tailor and bream. Best baits to use are
pilchards and squid.
Catch up on the latest fishing action on the
Coochiemudlo Squire Facebook page
So, tight lines ‘til next time...
Early morning, when fishing is at its best.

John Sharrock
By Rachael Krinks
John Sharrock is a charismatic and rather cheeky fellow
and a self-taught artist. Working mainly in acrylic he has
lived on Coochiemudlo Island for around 3 and a half
years. I caught up with John at the recent launch of the
Coochie Artisan’s Collective, of which he is one of the
founding members. John told me about his approach to his
art.
“I have an emotional thing for colour. It’s a form of
meditation for me to paint. I’m a little bit disturbed about
what’s happening in the world and I seek out community
spirit.” John paints abstracts he says. “I like to paint off
beat hilarity; I like to create something different. I’m trying
to project happiness.”
John at a recent exhibition on Coochiemudlo Island
John says “I get a lot of feedback from people that the
colours in my paintings they find very joyous.” …./11

.. creative makers on Coochie can work together to
contribute their skills and develop channels to display
and sell their work.
Lianne Counsell provided the following info on the
Collective:-
The Coochiemudlo Artisan Collective is a new initiative
for artisans who live on Coochiemudlo Island. This
initiative was organised recently, as a response for the need
to “bring together artisans who live on Coochiemudlo
Island in a supportive, inspiring and dynamic environment
where diversity is celebrated and opportunities are created
for sharing, skill development and promotion of talent.”
Following on from the success of the Bay FM
Coochiemudlo Showcase on Sunday 31 March, we
envisage keeping the momentum going and have some very
exciting short and long-term goals that include
opportunities to exhibit and sell your work.
If you create, and you live here, we would like to invite you
to join the group on Facebook. A series of gatherings are
being planned that will provide opportunities to share,
develop and materialise a collective vision for the arts on
the island.

Poetic Licence
The poetry morning was quite entertaining
The topics varied and diverse
On rusty boats and stormy seas
Some in prose and others in verse
The venue was an outdoor setting
Walls of gauze round a garden room
Surrounded with flowering gum and wattle
Two tall grevilleas in orange bloom
A dozen or so small honeyeaters
Caught my eye as the poems were read
Verse and voices faded to a murmur
As I focussed on those flighty creatures instead
They landed on blossoms high or low
Some upside down on their leafy swings
Curved little beaks plunged deep for the nectar
Pale grey bodies creamy under the wings
Laughter at the table brought me back
I’d missed out on some poetic pun
How pleasant it was on a Monday morn
Enjoying poetry friends and a bit of fun

Book Review: Say
Hello
Author, Carly Findlay
Review by Kylie Purdie https://www.facebook.com/littleblackmarks/
Any book that takes you inside the world of someone
who lives a reality you don't can be uncomfortable
and confronting to read. A book that asks you to look
at your behaviour, whether past or present and
contemplate if you have behaved in a less than
desirable way can make you squirm. Any book that
asks you to put your experience to one side and
simply listen to another’s experience without going
"yes but..." can be hard to read.
Carly Findlay asks you to do all of these things with
this book. But then she takes you by the hand and
explains why. Why the way we talk about disabilities
and disabled people needs to change. Why we need
to check our language, our assumptions, our
judgements and listen to those who are living their
life. We need to hear them when they say - this is
what you don't see, what you don't think about and
why that makes it harder for us to access things you
take for granted or discourages us from being able to
go out into the wider world.
Carly Findlay makes no apologies for her views on
ableism, feminism or any other ism you want to
mention. She has learned over time if she doesn't
speak up for herself, no one else will. She has learned
her words have power and if people don't like her
using that power, if people don't like her asking for
things that make her life easier or better, then that is
their problem not hers.
I had the privilege of not only hearing Carly speak
about her book, but to then sit across the table from
her at dinner. I will freely admit before reading her
work, listening to her talk and talking to her at
dinner, I would have been one of those people who
unthinkingly asked "what happened to your face?"
Carly taught me the power of hello, of thinking
whether I need to know the answer to a very personal
question and how much more I can learn if I focus on
the person, not their condition. (Like I now know
how to make Peking duck wraps that don't fall apart!
Thanks Carly!!).
Film Review: Hotel
Mumbai
Review by Rachael Krinks
After a big week I decided to blow off some steam with a
friend so we road tripped into Coorparoo to see Hotel
Mumbai at the Dendy. I'd read reviews saying it was
powerful, inspiring and magnificently filmed. I knew it
was about the terrorist attack on the hotel but from the
review didn't really think the WHOLE film would be the
attack in the way that it was. An earlier movie about the
downing of a plane in Pennsylvania during the 9/11
attacks was a full on piece too but it had a lot more cutting
away to people trying to help outside the action.
Hotel Mumbai, once the action starts is Full On. My heart
rate and adrenaline were pumping for the whole film. For
the last hour I sat terrified as they tried to escape. I had
both my hands placed palms flat over my chest and heart.
When the film ended and the lights came on me and my
friend just sat there and the older man next to me sat
deflated in his seat. He looked like he'd been in a …/14

Muscle Cars, Hot Rods
& Superformance
By Rachael Krinks and Grant Malseed
It was an absolute pleasure to interview Grant
Malseed, a Coochie resident and Director of
Superformance, a company that builds hot rods and
some of the sexiest muscle cars I've seen in real life.
I've always loved muscle cars. I just love their curves
and swagger. My visit to Superformance didn’t
disappoint, with staff working hard on a wide range of
cars, including an orange 1969 Dodge Charger (just
like the car from Dukes of Hazzard!).
A Redlands institution for more than 40 years at their
location of 539 Redland Bay Road Capalaba, these
good folks are known as Australia’s preferred
performance store.
Superformance has been building cars, engines,
transmissions, differentials and supplying parts since
1978. They cater for Hot Rods (also known as Street
Rods), Muscle Cars, Pickup Trucks, Australian
Classics and Drag Cars. They’re also a specialist
importer of parts and cars from the USA.
Operating on the site of almost two acres for 40 plus
years, Superformance has seen major changes since
2005 under the new ownership of Grant Malseed.
Grant is only the second owner of this Redlands icon.
Renovations have seen three new workshops built, a
fabrication shop, mechanical workshop and engine clean
room. The largest of the workshops is 600m2
and these
new workshops complement the existing large work-
shop area.
Superformance has just been invited again to compete in
season three of the TV show Rides Down Under
Workshop Wars which is aired on Channel 7 Mate and
internationally. This will be the third time in succession
an invitation has been offered to Superformance.

in the way I've learned to from watching movies, ie
head chest, left right, and the first thing I said was
"I'm probably never going to travel again. And I
just thank God that I am Australian and we live
here." Yes, I know anything can happen anywhere
and things happen here, but I am generally (and
particularly after that film) very aware of the
privileged position we as Australians have in terms
of safety and responsiveness of our emergency
services, and I am fundamentally grateful to be
Australian for this one precious life I have been
given.

car accident, just wrung out and shocked. We went to the
bar to get a scotch/wine/anything. We weren't able to eat
for a bit, just had to sit quietly. We told the barman how
we were feeling and later he came over and said another
man had come up to the bar still holding onto his chest
with the same response to the film.
Having said all of the above I recommend it. It was
magnificently done showing the whole spectrum of
humanity from the murderous worst to the self sacrificing
best - the absolute worst and the absolute best that we, as
humans, are capable of. It was like bearing witness and I
am glad I saw it though incredibly saddened it happened
in reality.
The other thought that came to me during the night
afterwards, or in the early morning, as the film played in
my head, was the incessant encouragement of the young
men by their handler, to continue during and right to the
end of the rampage, he communicated with them by
phone. And their last mad stand before dying, was similar
to the last scene of Gallipoli, where the men, also
encouraged by the hierarchy, were encouraged to go to
their suicidal deaths by raising their heads and charging
guns drawn. It was a similar scene at the end for the last
remaining two young terrorists and I wonder if it was ..

From the Editor’s Desk The biggest joy I experience publishing this newspaper is
starting conversations with people to find out what makes
them tick, and being amazed at the wide ranging talents
and passions I discover lurking inside each person I talk
to. This issue of Coochie Island News features a range of
ways Coochie residents express their creative selves, from
painting on canvas, building muscle cars and hot rods and
solving our transport problems with innovative solutions.
Re the Federal election, I asked the candidates for
Bowman to respond to issues Coochie residents said were
of importance. However because of our print deadline not
all candidates were able to respond in time. I decided it
was not fair to those who had little time to respond to run
the article. This was my fault. I only had the idea of
approaching candidates for their policies in the week I
went to print. Lesson learnt! Apologies for not delivering
the promised policy summaries.
Look out next month for our new How We Met Column!
Guaranteed to put a smile on your face! Thanks for
reading Coochie Island News! It means a lot to me, and to
our sponsor and advertisers who together make
publication of this newspaper possible.

Building Self-
Confidence Through
Exercise
By Helen Symes Too often exercise is only seen as one part of a weight
loss program but it is also an important part of
improving our confidence and self-esteem.
In addition to boosting our energy levels, oxygen
capacity, muscle tone and flexibility, regular exercise
can also boost our self-confidence. It gives us a positive
outlook towards life in the way we view ourselves and
the world around us. The success of just sticking to an
exercise plan allows us to enjoy a sense of achievement.
We not only feel better physically but also mentally
giving us a renewed sense of self-confidence.
Joining a gym for the first time can be a little
overwhelming and even intimidating with all its high
tech and innovative equipment, heavy machines and
weights. With guidance and support, however, we can
overcome our fears by taking action, assuming control
and achieving results.
As a Personal Trainer, many times I hear people say “I
cannot do that.” My response is always “Have you
tried?” More often than not, it’s our fear and inhibitions
holding us back. With encouragement and support and
by having a go, we can incrementally achieve things we
previously thought we could never do.
The new Coochie gym is an amazing asset to our
community and is now fully open for business.
If you would like to join, please email us at
[email protected] for membership details.
Once you join, you will receive a free comprehensive
orientation to all the new innovative equipment with
professional guidance and support.
What’s happening at
our Gym?
By Helen Symes
After much discussion with Council and a strong
commitment by our community, the new Jock Allan
Memorial Gym opened its doors on 22 February this
year. This brand new facility is fully equipped with the
latest technology. A wide array of new cardio and
weight machines as well as other equipment was
purchased through a government grant of almost
$25,000.
The gym has been powering ahead since it opened. In
the last few months, we have signed up 67 members
ranging in age from 16 to almost 80 years young! A
free, comprehensive orientation was given to each
member so they can access the facility and use the
equipment in a safe and effective way.
The government grant has now been acquitted and we
are awaiting advice from Council about an official gym
opening. In addition, a survey of stakeholders was
conducted to include in a business case to Council to
extend the gym’s hours of operation. Currently the gym
is available to members from Monday to Saturday from
6.30 am to 6.30 pm but closed on Sundays and public
holidays. We are hoping that, in the future, members
will be able to use the gym 7 days a week and from 5.30
am to 7.30 pm. Watch this space!
A Working Group manages the gym’s operations and
comprises David Brown (Chair), Graham Keech
(Membership Coordinator) and Helen Symes (New
Member Orientation and representative on the
Recreation Club Committee).
If you would like to join the gym, please email us at
[email protected] or contact one of us directly.
Our contact details are listed on the inside back cover of
this newspaper (p. 19).

Arranging a Tribute
Seat on Coochiemudlo By Keith Stebbins
On the passing of my parents, my two sisters and brother
decided that they would like to have a tribute seat erected
near the beach in their memory. As I was the only one
living near a beach I was asked to see if I could have a seat
erected on Coochiemudlo Island.
First I went on line and found the Redlands City Council
(RCC) guidelines for having a Tribute park seat erected:
The web page is:
https://www.redland.qld.gov.au/info/20121/cemeterie
s_and_tributes/104/tribute_seats_plaques_and_trees
The web page advised: “Tribute park seats Contribution -
$2,110.50 including GST. Tribute park seats carry an
inscribed plaque with your tribute text. In return for your
contribution, we provide the following for an initial 10
year term:
park seat
tribute plaque with inscription
installation
maintenance
graffiti and damage repairs and replacement.
After this term, you may renew the arrangement with
another financial contribution (as required by Council
policy at that time). All tribute park seat requests are
subject to Council approval. You can download the Tribute
Park Seat Application form here.”
Request a tribute
To request a tribute, contact RCC Civic and Open Space
Asset Management on 07 3829 8265. Tell RCC where you
would like to place your tribute and include two
preferences for alternative locations.
Once a location is agreed, RCC will ask you to provide:
written confirmation that you agree to the terms
and conditions
wording for your plaque inscription
your payment contribution.
You will also receive a PDF proof of your plaque before it
is inscribed.

Much love from family and friends
I took photos of three possible sites and when the council
approved the Laurie Burns/Recreation Club site I discussed
the site with Denise Foley and we agreed that it could be a
seat for Recreation Club members waiting for a lift or
enjoying the park view.
The whole process took approximately 3 months and RCC
was extremely helpful.

Golf Club News By Jacqui Christensen
Every April a group of golfers from the Isle of
Coochie Golf Club compete in the Bay Island
Challenge held on Macleay Island.
It’s a fabulous day of golf and the Macleay Island
hosts excelled this year. The course was in
excellent condition and the lunch was
scrumptious.
Martin from Coochie Boat Hire ferried everyone
over and as usual took good care of the players
and their clubs.
But in the end, Isle of Coochie Golf Club was the
victor and brought home the shield! The overall
winner of the day was John
Horton. Congratulations Coochie & John!

The Impact of Changing Negative Gearing
Property investors bring many benefits to the real
estate market, which is a point to be considered
during the current debate about negative gearing,
ahead of the Federal election in May.
The policy is not simply a tax minimisation scheme for
the wealthy, but also assists all households by providing a
solid supply of affordable rental accommodation. It is
also the means by which many retirees fund their later
years.
More than 2.5 million dwellings in Australia are leased
and attract an average weekly rent of $450, according to
latest figures. These are not all luxury palaces but
ordinary homes, just like ours.
There is a risk that the proposed changes to negative
gearing will discourage long-term investment in
residential property and reduce the number of rental
options for those unable to afford to buy their own home.
A recent report from SQM Research found that, if the
proposed changes to negative gearing are implemented,
investors would demand higher rental yield; with rental
prices potentially increasing by between 7 - 12% from
2020 to 2022, assuming there is an interest rate cut.
Retaining negative gearing for new properties has been
designed to keep the construction sector active, but some
hold the view that it could do the opposite. The proposed
changes combined with recent increased financial
regulation has generated some nervousness for those
considering purchasing off-the-plan.
Investors will no longer be confident of a `quick exit’
because they will be limited to who will want to buy it.
Another investor will not be able to enjoy the benefits of
negative gearing, for the same property, so it eliminates
that crucial secondary market.
A large number of new developments rely heavily on
investors - sometimes up to 60% of sales - before they
can even commence construction. When you hit one part
of the supply chain, you really hit the whole supply chain.
By Catherine Goldwater, LJ Hooker Cleveland
Abolishing negative gearing may not encourage
new housing stock because investors need to know
there is potential for future capital gain, but at the
moment they have no idea what their property will
be worth on the other side of the change.
If the market experiences a slow-down in new
housing, on top of what is currently being
experienced, it could be another factor driving an
increase in rental prices because there will be a
limited number of properties available to rent.
Regional areas are also likely to be impacted if
investors drop out of the market. There are many
small and medium sized towns which attract little
new construction but have a population that relies
on rental accommodation. This is likely to have a
real affect on the Coochie market.
Historically investors have made up around 30% of
housing finance commitments and over recent years
it has peaked at almost 55 percent in NSW. During
this period, rents have remained relatively flat, in
real terms.
So, we can see benefits that a strong housing supply
AND investors add to the property market. It not
only allows ordinary Australians to invest in real
estate, but more importantly provides stability and
peace of mind for those who rely on rental housing
stock for everyday living.
