VISIt to SunDer nurSerY
an educational tour to Sunder nursery, nizamuddin new Delhi was organized by School of architecture and
Planning (SOAP) on 23rd October 2019 for the 4th year students as a part of their curriculum of Site Planning & Landscape Design. The aim of this visit was to make the students understand the concept, planning and materials of the place. The faculty accompanying the students was Ar. Shivani Singh. The Nursery has eventually become a 90-acre (36 hectare) city park with distinct heritage, ecological and nursery zones, as well as all the expected facilities. It was originally established in the early 20th century when the Imperial Delhi complex was being planned and constructed. It was used as a place for propagating
trees and other plants to be used in the new capital city, and also
for testing species brought from other parts of India and from
overseas, to pick those which successfully thrive in Delhi’s
harsh climate. the aim of the Landscape Master Plan has been to establish design relationships between these three major
uses by weaving a meaningful visitor experience through them,
traversing the site in a way that encourages and enables
appreciation of all three aspects and also offers opportunities for recreation, education and discovery. Sensitive site planning
and landscape design would create spatial identities that overlap and intersect but the distinctive identity of each component far from being compromised, contributes vigorously to the whole. The students were divided in groups and allotted with the above mentioned topics and are told to prepare individual sheets for representation
based on various landscape design elements & principles. they observed various major elements such as levels,
Persian gardens, sunken gardens, 6 aSI protected monuments; children play area, variety of native trees, shrubs
& bushes, grasses of Delhi. Overall, it was a great learning experience for students through which they got opportunity to enhance all the senses in a short while.
