Lubricants for Conveyor SystemsIntroduction

Klüber Lubrication has developedspecial high-temperature lubricantsfor conveyor systems which provideexcellent lubricating properties, even at temperatures* from 160 to250 °C, and maximum operating re-liability whilst cutting maintenanceexpenses.

Klüber offers paint-friendly lubri-cants and can furnish referencesfrom all reknown car makers andmany paint manufacturers.

Klüber Lubrication not only sells lubricants but offers a LubricationEngineering Service for conveyorsystems which examines, for exam-ple, the condition of the lubricant indismantled load rollers and deter-mines the remaining quantity of lubricant as well as the texture of the used lubricant.

Depending on the results of such examinations, we determine the correct lubricant, the necessaryquantity and the relubrication intervals.

This Lubrication Engineering Ser-vice ensures high operating reliabil-ity and low maintenance expensesfor your conveyor systems.

The grease should be filled directlyinto the bearing free space with theinitial lubrication.

We recommend filling the loadrollers completely with Klüberplex

BE 31-502 if they are exposed toaqueous media and temperatures*are under 130 °C. This improves thesealing effect and provides goodprotection against corrosion.

Lubricants for Conveyor SystemsLoad Rollers on Power Chains

Relubrication intervals

The diagram Figure 4 shows guide-line values for relubrication intervalswith the load rollers of Power chains, which are lubricated with BARRIER -TA. They apply to conveyor systemswhose cooling length is at least 4times as long as the oven length andto 4 load rollers with cages. With fullball load rollers, the relubrication in-tervals are shorter. The appropriatevalues also apply to load rollers onFree trolleys.

Whether and when the load rollershave to be relubricated, can also be determined by the LubricationEngineering Service of Klüber, seepage 4 Introduction.

Determination of relubrication quantities

While there are guideline values for the quantities required for initiallubrication, those for relubricationmust be determined by trial:

1. Fill a few load rollers with a defined quantity of lubricant.

2. The load rollers must make atleast one conveyor circuit.

3. Remove the load rollers andopen.

4. If the balls and the races are notcoated with fresh lubricant, add afurther defined quantity of lubri-cant and go to step 2.

When the balls and the races arecoated with grease, the relubricationquantity has been determined.

Lubricants for Conveyor SystemsTurn Rollers, Chain Bearing Rollers, Guide Bearing Rollers

Turn rollers, chain bearing rollersand guide support rollers have asimilar design.

Turn rollers are primarily used onoverhead and underfloor conveyors, while chain bearing rollers and guidesupport rollers are primarily used onSKID conveyors.

Quantity for initial lubrication

With the initial lubrication, fill bothrows of balls or rolling bearings resp.with lubricant.

Quantities for relubricationRelubrication intervals

With chain bearing rollers andguide bearing rollers in SKID conveyors, the condition of the lubricant has to be checked every 6 to 8 months.

Relubricate if metallic noises can beheard when the roller is running. Incase of doubt, have the LubricationEngineering Service of Klüber Lubri-cation check the condition of the lubricant. With dryer temperatures*of about 220 °C, lubrication intervalsfrom 18 to 24 months can bereached.

Fill both rows of balls with lubricant.

The quantities required for the lubri-cation of turn rollers in circular con-veyors can be determined by trial.

With turn rollers (without grease nipple) used at ambient tempera-tures* of 150 to 250 °C, we suggestthe following relubrication proce-dure:

1. Remove the turn rollers after1000 to 2000 hours of operation.

2. Rotate the rollers so that the bottom row of balls is on the topand install the rollers again.

3. Remove the turn rollers again after a further 1000 to 2000 operating hours.

4. Remove the seals and fill bothrows of balls with lubricant.

Quantity for initial lubrication

With the initial lubrication, fill 60 to70% of the bearing free space withlubricant.

If the lubricant can creep out of thebearing (especially the upper), fillalso the intermediate cavities.

Quantities for relubricationRelubrication intervals

We recommend that the condition ofthe lubricant be checked

• every 6 months if the maximumtemperature* is 200 °C

• every 3 months if the tempera-ture* is higher than 200 °C.

Relubricate the bearings as needed.

Avoidance of Paint Defects

A4 10017

Fig. 10: Seals in a load roller

With insufficiently sealed load andturn rollers in overhead conveyors, lubricant may drip onto the materialtransported and cause paint defects.

Remedy:

• well-sealed load rollers or turnrollers

• dirt catch plates• small lubrication quantities.

Page 11: Conveyors lubricants.pdf

Lubricants for Conveyor SystemsChains

Lubricant consumption

It is most economical to always keep the chain “moist with oil”. To do this, apply very small quantities

of lubricant at relatively short inter-vals so that no excessive lubricantdrips out.
