CONVERSATION ON MENTAL HEALTH
Parents - Please join us for a conver-sation about suicide awareness and mental health promotion on Decem-ber 4th 6:00-7:30pm in the Learning Commons. Although parents may be aware that children and teens are af-fected by suicide, we often do not think it could happen to our child or in our community. This discussion will help to better understand and re-spond to the prevalence of suicide and suicide attempts among youth, warning signs, risk and protective fac-tors, how to respond if you recognize your child or another youth is at risk, the schools response, and where to turn for help at school and in the community. If you have any ques-tions, do not hesitate to contact Sheelu Joshi Flegal or Karen Chininis. [email protected]; [email protected]

ASVAB - Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
Souhegan High School will host the ASVAB Career Exploration Pro-gram to interested 10-12 grade students on Saturday, January 19, 2019 beginning at 8:30am. The ASVAB is approximately 2 ½-3 hours in length.
The ASVAB Career Exploration Program, sponsored by our Depart-ment of Defense, is a public service provided to our nation’s schools at no cost and no obligation. The ASVAB, the world’s most widely used aptitude battery, is comprised of eight subtests that yield three Career Exploration Scores (Verbal Skills, Math Skills, and Science and Technical Skills). These three scores, combined with results of an interest inventory, will assist your child when exploring a wide va-riety of educational and career options. After the ASVAB test, stu-dents receive Exploring Careers: The ASVAB Career Exploration Guide with their test results. Time will be scheduled during the school day, several weeks following the assessment, to complete a work-shop to help students explore careers. To learn more about the stu-dent benefits of ASVAB CEP participation, please view the program website and visit “Info for Parents” at www.asvabprogram.com.
One of the scores of the ASVAB is the military ser-vices’ entrance score which your student can use to ex-plore career options in the military. Your child is not obligated to military service as the ASVAB is designed to allow exploration of both military and civilian jobs. Therefore, should you wish to explore further options with the military, you will need to contact the military branch of your choice. The school has elected not to release the scores to the military. Civilian education services specialists administer the ASVAB.
To register your child for the ASVAB, parents should contact Maren Petropulos at ext. 5309 or [email protected]. Please register by December 21st.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
From 12/03/2018 to 12/14/2018, Souhegan High School's Spanish Honor Society will be sell-ing hand-woven bracelets, or ‘pulseras’ in Spanish, to empower the artists who make them in Nicaragua & Guatemala. The sale was organized through the Pulsera Project, a Fair Trade nonprofit organiza-tion that empowers and educates people in the U.S. and Central America through pulsera sales.
Student and teacher vol-unteers raise funds that benefit fair trade jobs, worker rights, sustain-ability, and education, while learning about the culture, lives, and struggles of Central Americans. The Pulsera Project’s goal is to cre-ate a more just and colorful world by encouraging conscious consum-erism and social enterprise.
SOUHEGAN HIGH SCHOOL RAISES AWARNESS AND FUNDS FOR ARTISTS IN CENTRAL AMERICA
Have you ever struggled to think of a gift that would mean a lot to the
recipient? Or have you ever given your child a gift that they loved for a
few days, weeks, or months, but then forgot about not long after? As
children grow into teenagers, it’s sometimes hard to think of what to
give them that will be meaningful and special, especially when so
many teenagers these days already have devices, cars, and other
2018 “necessities.” Maybe this year you could consider the gift of
memories that will last a lifetime, all courtesy of a unique travel experi-
ence.
Over February vacation in 2020, a group of Souhegan students and
two teachers will travel to Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. This op-
portunity of a lifetime includes all transportation, lodging, admission
fees, breakfasts, and dinners. Organized and facilitated by the highly-
regarded educational travel company Explorica, the cost also includes
a tour director who is with the group full-time. In order to lower the
cost, Explorica even creates a fundraising page for each individual
student that can be shared with friends and family to solicit donations.
The cost can even be made in monthly payments. The gift of travel is something that your child will cherish forever - the sights, the sounds, the smells. Longer than a new phone. Longer than new sneakers. Longer than Fortnite skins. For more information, visit www.explorica.com/sign-up and enter code Gibbons-5668 or contact [email protected] and [email protected].
