Lesson 1 - ISDN Concepts  Integrated Digital Networks

As analog transmission and switching components were rendered obsolete bysuperior digital technologies, a new set of protocols was needed to benefit from thefull potential of the digital systems. ISDN provides a framework for the development of these components and protocols.

Telephone companies have largely converted their voice networks from analog todigital. They have made the resulting integrated digital network (IDN) directly

accessible for data communications by first offering digital data service (DDS), then T-carrier service.

ISDN represents a logical migration of voice-oriented IDN toward a network thatserves multiple purposes--voice, data, video, fax, and all other forms of electroniccommunication, regardless of the source. The ISDN Network Diagram illustrates theservices ISDN can transport.

ISDN Network

ISDN can be characterized in two ways:

 As a bundle of services offered for transmission of voice, data, and other forms of communication by means of the switched telephone networks of the world

 As a set of protocols that defines a standard interface to the network, making itpossible for many vendors to supply both hardware and software to takeadvantage of the services offered
