ADVANTAGES OF A PLANETARY GEAR DESIGN

THE IMPORTANCE OF A NON REVERSIBLE STEERINGSYSTEM FOR INCREASED SAFETYWith Ultraflex Non-Reversible steering helms T73NRFC, T74NRFC, T83NRFC theloads applied to the steering system are no longer a problem. A special patented deviceallows the helm shaft to lock until turned by the driver, maintaining the boat direction andneutralizing the feedback loads on the steering cable. The mechanism is engaged whenthe driver is not turning the wheel and is automatically disengaged as soon as the driverapplies pressure on the wheel to change direction of the boat.

The drawingillustrates how aboat equippedwithout a non-reversible steeringsystem, starts acircularuncontrolledmovement if thedriver is expelledinto the water,putting him in avery dangeroussituation.

Ultraflex mechanical steering helms T71FC, T73NRFCas well as their dual cable versions use a PlanetaryGear Design. A Planetary Gear Design has threesatellite gears that rotate on their axis and at the sametime rotate around the central helm axis. This allows forequal distribution of engine torque over three points ofthe central gear, dividing and balancing the systemloads. The benefits of this special design are increasedsystem longevity, increase efficiency & less enginefeedback compared to single pinion gear helms.

Use and MaintenanceThe steering cable must be installed avoiding excessive and/ortight bends. This will provide the driver with easy handling at allspeeds; reduce system inefficiency, & excess play in the system.Marine corrosion may cause the materials to deteriorate affectingmanoeuvring efficiency and in the worst case, system failure. Byfollowing the engine manufacturers specifications, the steeringcable end fittings and engine cable support must be cleaned andgreased periodically.The steering cable must be regularly inspected. If steeringbecomes hard, inconsistent, cuts on the conduit surface arenoticed, or any other component found damaged the cable mustbe replaced immediately. When storing your boat for an extended period of time werecommend removing the steering cable end fitting from its engineside support and cleaning adequately.

Suggestions and Warnings whenSelecting a Mechanical Steering SystemSelection of the appropriate mechanical steering system is animportant factor for the safety and functionality of your boat. Thecombination of engine power, hull type and boat speed influencethe correct selection of the steering system. The load on thesteering system increases with the boat speed and engine power;the torque generated by the propeller rotation in high poweroutboard applications can make it hard to steer. Big boats with displacement hulls & inboard or stern driveengines, can generate high rudder loads: in these cases amechanical steering systems will be inadequate and we suggestthe use of hydraulic steering.We always recommend consulting qualified personnel whenselecting, installing and maintaining a steering system for your boat.

• Speed, hull, horsepower, engine type, displacement and size are major factors in boat performance and handling characteristics. The above selection guideshould be used as a general reference only.

• One of the major factors in selecting a steering system is proper cable length. Due to a specific routing in each boat, these approximate lengths will vary.Final selection should be made with the assistance of a qualified installation mechanic.

• Ultraflex mechanical steering systems should not be used on boats equipped with engines that exceed the maximum horsepower rating of the boat.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR NEW STEERING CABLE INSTALLATIONAdd: A + B + C and subtract 10cm (4'') for each 90° bend in the cable. For installation through theengine tilt tube, add 30.5cm (1ft) to the measure calculated above. Aquafax stocks M58 and M66steering cables in foot length, to order divide by 30.5cm (1ft) and round off to the next whole foot.

When the torque necessary to manoeuvre a boat is not specified by naval architect nor bythe shipbuilders yard, it can be calculated as follows:-It must be known that the torque necessary to manoeuvre a boat depends on:• The speed of the water flowing on the surface of the rudder at a certain angle• The rudder size• The total sweep of rudder (& a part of the boat) when rudder shaft is not perpendicular• The compensating surface

A hydraulic manual steering system consists of threebasic main components: a) The helm pump b) The cylinder c) The hose or tubing required to connect the cylinder

to the helm pump

To select the type of cylinder and the size of the helmpump best suited to your boat, take into considerationthe following variables:

1) Type of boats (planing or displacement) 2) Type of engine (outboard, inboard, sterndrive) 3) Number of engines 4) Total power of the engines 5) Space available in the splashwell & dash areas for

the steering components

When making your choice, specify the following options: 1) Number of steering stations 2) Additional features such as autopilots

Number of Turns in Relation to Steering EffortWhen choosing the responsiveness of a steeringsystem, remember that the steering wheel effort isproportional to the number of wheel turns: the quickerthe steering, the harder the effort.

The number of wheel turns lock to lock depends onthe volume of the cylinder and the displacement of thehelm pump.

Other factors that can influence steering effort are thevessel speed, rudder size, propeller selection, oilviscosity and hull type.

Assume a rudder with:Height of 0.5m (h)Overall width of 0.35m (a)Balance of 0.10m (b)Maximum boat speed = 22 knotsPort to Starboard = 70º

The maximum torque on the rudder blade is given by:T = S x [(0.4a)-b] x V2 x kT = S x (0.4a-b) x V2 x 15.89T = (0.5 x 0.35) x [(0.4 x 0.35) - 0.10] x 222 x 15.89T = 0.175 X 0.04 x 484 x 15.89T = 53.9kgm

Assuming twin ruddersMaximum steering torque = (53.9 x 2) = 107.8kgmTherefore the appropriate cylinder = 4-48034 (max torque rating of 111kgm)

ULTRAFLEX SILVERSTEER™ HIGH PERFORMANCE OUTBOARD STEERING SYSTEMThe Silversteer hydraulic steering system is designed for use on high performance boatssuch as sports ribs. The helm pump operates at a higher pressure than the standard helms. (Relief valvesetting at 105 bar (1500psi) instead of 70 bar (1000psi) on the standard helms). Adjustable 45º stainless steel helm pump fittings and Kevlar stranded high pressurehoses can be supplied in a range of lengths to make the connections between the helmand cylinder. The combination of the higher pressure helm pump and technical features on the UC128-SVS cylinder make the system particularly fast and stress resistant.

The AV hatch lifters are electromechanical products, especially designedfor marine use on pleasure boats. They allow full or partial opening andclosing of heavy engine hatches, peak tanks, hatch beams etc.By activating a switch, it is possible to lift the hatch to any desiredposition from closed to full open; an internal self locking mechanism willmaintain the position preventing any accidental hatch closing. In case ofa power failure an emergency device allows for manual opening.

• According to load required the AV hatch lifter can be mounted individually or in twin cylinder installation for heavier loads. It is also possible to install more than two AV actuators in multiple applications.

Components • Hatch Lifter - 1 x Actuator for single installation (Fig.1) or 2 x

Actuators for dual installation (Fig.2). External diameter: 48mm.Length in the closed position: 377mm (14.8") + stroke. Max. oscillation range: 125°.

• Actuator - 1 x Actuator for single installation (Fig.1) - no dualinstallation. External diameter: 34mm (1.3"). Length at closedposition: 308mm (12") stroke. Max oscillation range: 180º.

• Voltage supply cable - 1.5m (5ft) is supplied.Warning: if a longer cable length is required, do not substitutethe existing harness, but make a junction following theinstructions supplied.

• Control box (optional) - A control box is required when usingmore than one hatch lifter or when one touch operation isdesired. 12V: 4-47714 & 24V: 4-47715.

• Switch (optional) - 1 x 3 way single pole momentary switch 4-47717• Switch (optional) - for use with single ram & no control box: 8-28222• Battery (optional) - see Section 8

InstallationThe following equation will help you to calculate the maximumstrength (Fmax) required from the hatch lifter to open your hatch,knowing the dimensions and weight of the hatch and the position ofthe mounting brackets.

Fmax = P x d x L 2 b a

P = weight of the hatch in Newtonc,a,b = dimensions in metres indicated in Fig.3 & Fig.4L= hatch lifter length when in closed position

Maximum load (Fmax):• AV Hatch Lifters: 1200 N (120kg - 265lbs) single installation,

2400 N (240kg - 530lbs) dual installationNOTE: When the load exceeds 2400 N (240kg - 530lbs), it ispossible to install more than two AV actuatorsUlysses Actuators: 650 N (65kg - 144lbs) single installation only,both pull & push.

Gas springs are pneumatic force accumulators mainlyused to lift, hold open and smoothly lower hatches,cover lids and doors.• Working temperature: -30C to +80C• Supplied in aftermarket packaging• Further lengths, strokes & output forces available to

special order onlyLateral loads & tensile forces exceeding the output forceas indicated for each single spring should be avoided.
