CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT

What is Controlled Assessment?

As part of the previous government’s reform of 14¬-19 learning, Controlled Assessment currently replaces coursework for many GCSEs. Controlled Assessment differs from coursework in that the work is produced under supervised conditions. These will be treated like examinations – students will be expected to behave as if in an examination and will be subject to the same consequences should they not.

How important are Controlled Assessments?

In short, they are absolutely crucial to gaining good GCSE grades. The table below, which gives the ratio of Exam to Controlled Assessment for the GCSEs we provide, shows that for some subjects the Controlled Assessment carries more weight than the External Examination.

How and when will Controlled Assessments be carried out?

Each subject area has planned when Controlled Assessments in their subject will take place and these are shown in the tables on the following pages. In rare circumstances, students may be asked to complete assessments in periods other than advertised or after school.

All Controlled Assessments have to be completed in strict timed periods. It is very important that students are sensible and realise the importance of these assessments.

Where will Controlled Assessments take place?

Controlled Assessments have been designed to take place within the normal teaching timetable, so they will usually be done in the classroom. There may be occasions, however, when it is more appropriate or convenient to have all the students in a larger venue, such as the hall.

Student deadlines and attendance The Examination Boards have issued time guidance for the completion of Controlled Assessments. The limit for completion must be adhered to so good attendance is therefore very important. If your child is absent it is important that school is notified as soon as possible. If a student has a genuine reason for not being able to meet a deadline they must speak to their subject teacher about it. Loss of work due to computer problems is generally NOT an acceptable reason for not meeting a deadline. This is one of the many reasons for not taking student on holiday during term time. These times should be NOT be used to take students out of school for ANY reason. The following pages show the Controlled assessment dates over the year – it is extremely detailed and it shows how much time is needed to cover controlled assessments. Although not every lesson in the periods shown may be actually used for controlled assessment, many will be.

PLAGIARISM and using Sources: This is defined by the Joint Council for Qualifications as “Unacknowledged copying from published sources (including the internet) or incomplete referencing”.

Specific Subject Information: This booklet aims to give an overview of Controlled assessments in school. Many specific subject areas will send subject specific information to parents/carers and students regarding exact times of assessments and any additional information. MFL - students prepare for CAs in lessons 3-4 weeks before the actual CA week. The writing CA will take place in one lesson during the designated period. For the speaking CA, students will be taken out of a lesson for a maximum of 10 minutes within the designated schedule. On-going Controlled Assessments: The following subjects have a more on-going approach to controlled assessments and students are working on the assessments over longer periods in lessons: • Leisure and Tourism – all year (Year 10) • History – June of Year 10 to December of Year 11 • Music - Year 10 will be in Spring term (10 lessons) and Year 11 in the Autumn (12 lessons) • D&T – Food and Nutrition, Product Design, Textiles and Resistant Materials

Further Information It should be noted that not all students will have lessons and/or controlled assessment periods in all sessions indicated in this booklet – these are the times allocated for all students across different teaching groups.
