Twenty-first Annual
Retirees Golf Tournament
By Guy Moore
It’s time to again put your teams together for the
Annual Retirees Golf Tournament — our Twen-
ty-first. As always, it will be held at Dwan Golf
Course in Bloomington. The date is August 18.
If you don’t have a full team, sign up as three-
some, two-some or single and we will find a great
group for you to play with.
At the recommendation of some of our long time
participants and realizing that not all of our mem-
bers desire to play 18 holes any longer, we will
try something different by adding a 9 hole seg-
ment to the tournament. The format will be the
same as the past 20 years. There will be Mixed,
Gent and 9 hole flights — in a scramble format.
There will be team and individual prizes. You
don’t have to be a great golfer to enjoy this one.
A flyer with the entry form is enclosed with this
newsletter (page 11).

Sweet Land By Nancy Dostal
On a Sunday afternoon in May, a group of retirees saw the play Sweet Land at the
Minnesota History Theater. Sweet Land is the story of Inga and Olaf in 1920, just
after the end of World War I. Inga, who speaks no English, arrives in Minnesota
in 1920 to marry a young Norwegian farmer whom she has never met. When
the couple go to the church, the minister refuses to marry them because Inga is
German and she does not have the proper papers. Inga and Olaf then go to the
county clerk to marry them - he also refuses. After WWI sentiment against
Germans was very high.
Inga then must live with neighbors until she and Olaf can marry. During this
time she struggles to learn about life in America and to speak English. Inga and
Olaf slowly come to know each other and they fall in love. Still unable to marry,
they live together openly despite the scorn of the neighbors and the disapproval
of the local minister.
When a neighbor’s farm is threatened by foreclosure, Olaf and Inga take a stand
to help and the community unites around the young couple, finally accepting
Inga as one of their own. The play was produced as a musical with some light
humor, very entertaining, and it made us think of the prejudices that existed 100
years ago, many of which still exist today. An enjoyable afternoon.

Broadway Songbook - Ordway
By Tom Moore
On a cool and rainy Sunday afternoon, 33 stalwart Ceridian retirees attended “Hollywood and Broadway,” the fourth season of Broadway Songbook, a retrospective of the first 10-0 years of American musicals.
Charming and bri8lliant writer, James A. Rocco, took us through this history lesson with beautifully arranged songs and stories, performed by a talented case of sing-ers/dancers/performers and musicians.
Rocco writes "musicals create a hyper reality, blowing up a story’s emotional excitement and expanding our vision of the world. When the story’s urgency becomes so great, the only thing a character can do is to explode into song and dance—right in front of us! Ulti-mately these songs inform and delight us and remain favorites.”
Ordway’s New Concert Hall is just the right place to experience the music and drama of these wonderful, familiar songs. “Blue Skies” “Cheek to Cheek” “City of Stars” “Over the Rainbow” The only thing missing was a few shared sing-a-longs. We knew all the words.

Daniel O’Donnell
By Nancy Dostal A group of Retirees recently spent a Sunday evening at the State Theater enjoying a Daniel O’Donnell concert. We all enjoyed his songs, jokes and dance moves and he encouraged us to sing along on many of his songs. Daniel is an Irish singer/performer who tours in the U.S. frequently and also performs in Branson. He is known for his close relationship with his fan base and his charismatic and engaging stage presence, and is arguably better known for his gentle, soft-spoken personality and clean cut image than for his music. After each performance he has a “meet and greet” session for autographs and photos with his fans, and he acknowledges by name many of the fans in the audi-ence that follow him. At this concert, he came out into the audience to talk to a couple he had met previously who were celebrating their 70th anniversary - I know of no other performer that does this. His music has been described as a mix of country and Irish folk and he has sold over 10 million records to date. He has received many awards in Ireland, including Irish Entertainer of the year in 1989, 1992 and 1996. A very enjoyable evening.

CRITICS CORNER
American in Paris By Gary Polaczyk It was an afternoon of toe-tapping music, dance and absolute splendor enjoyed by our group of Ceridian Retirees and guests attending the performance of “American in Paris” at the Ordway Theater in St. Paul on June 17. We were treated to Gershwin melodies, graceful dancers and imaginative choreography. This Tony Award winning show was here as part of its National Tour after recently finishing an 18-month-run on Broadway in New York City. The performance, based on the 1950’s movie starring Gene Kelly, was set in Paris at the end of WWII. It included songs like “I Got Rhythm,” “The Man I Love,” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.” The dancing scenes, costuming and set designs were exquisite and a joy to behold with the story line full of love and interspersed with comedy! A beautiful and heart-warming way to spend an afternoon.

HOUSEHOLD TIPS
1. Keep brown sugar soft by storing with a couple of marshmallows. 2. Install a regular coat rack low down the wall to store shoes safely off the floor. 3. Create a thrifty watering can by puncturing holes in the top of a used milk bottle. 4. Remove pet hair from furniture and carpets with a squeegee. 5. Flip a toaster on its side to make an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich. 6. Water straight from the tap becomes cloudy when frozen. To make crystal clear ice cubes, allow a kettle of
boiled water to cool slightly, and use this to fill your ice cube trays. 7. Use a large muffin tin to cook stuffed peppers in the oven - it will help keep them upright. 8. To prevent potatoes budding, add an apple in the bag. 9. Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to the water when hard-boiling eggs to make the shells incredibly easy
to peel off. 10.WD40 can be used to remove crayon marks from any surface. 11.To tell if eggs are fresh, immerse them in a bowl of water. Fresh eggs will lie on the bottom; stale eggs will
float to the surface. 12.To clean a wooden chopping board, sprinkle on a handful of Kosher salt and rub with half a lemon. Rinse
with clean water and dry to ensure it is clean and germ-free. 13.Use ice cubes to lift out indentations made by furniture on your carpets. 14.Prevent soil from escaping from the holes in the base of flowerpots by lining with large coffee filters. 15.To sharpen scissors, simply cut through sandpaper. 16.Use rubber bands to help open a jar easily. Place one around the far lid and another around the middle of
the glass. The rubber provides friction to prevent your hands from slipping. 17.To prevent your eyes watering while chopping onions, wipe the chopping board with white vinegar (which
won’t affect the taste of the onions). 18.Store bed sheets inside their pillowcases for easy storage and access. 19.Drop a couple of denture cleaning tablets into the toilet bowl at night to clean off stubborn stains. 20.Use inverted cupcake papers to cover drink glasses in the summer and prevent flies from dropping in. 21.Use egg cartons to store delicate Christmas tree decorations. 22.Use a can opener to open those endlessly-annoying blister packs and avoid cutting yourself. 23.Use a cut potato to easily remove a broken light bulb. 24.Use chalk to remove grease stains from clothes. Simply rub white chalk on the affected area and wash as
normal. The chalk will absorb the grease and be washed away in the cycle. 25.Freeze grapes to chill white wine without watering it down. Frozen grapes are great even without the wine. 26.Use a rubber band to rescue a stripped screw.
27.Wrap rubber bands around the ends of a coat hanger to prevent dresses from slipping off.
