TYPES SB-1, SB-9, AND SB-10

INTRODUCTION

The Type SB-1 switches (see cover i l l u s t r a t i o n and F ig . 1 ) a re m u l t i - p o l e r o t a r y switches w i t h cam- operated contac ts . They have t h e i r p o s i t i o n i n g devices o r r e t u r n sp r ings l oca ted between t h e f r o n t support and f i r s t b a r r i e r w h i l e t h e Type SB-9 (see F ig . 2) has t h e p o s i t i o n i n g dev ice o r r e t u r n s p r i n g l oca ted a t t he r e a r o f t h e swi tch . The Type SB-9 a l s o has b e t t e r i n s u l a t i o n t o ground, more s u b s t a n t i a l bear ings, and l ong l i f e cams.

The Type SB-10 switches (see F ig . 3 ) combine con tac ts operated by r o t a t i o n o f t h e s h i f t , as i n t h e SB-1 and 9 switches, w i t h contac ts operated by a l a t e r a l mot ion (push o r p u l l ) o f t h e s h a f t . Only two l a t e r a l p o s i t i o n s o f t h e s h a f t a re poss ib le . I n t e r l o c k s are u s u a l l y prov ided so the push-pu l l con tac ts can be oper- a ted o n l y i n s p e c i f i c r o t a r y p o s i t i o n s o f t h e switch, and a l s o the r o t a r y con tac ts can be operated i n o n l y one l a t e r a l p o s i t i o n o f t h e sha f t , e i t h e r push o r p u l l .

NOTE: I n s t r u c t i o n s f o r Type SB-1 switches a l s o app ly t o superseded Type SB-7 switches.

APPLICATION

The Type SB-1 , SB-9 and SB-10 switches a r e p r i m a r i l y in tended f o r t h e c o n t r o l o f e l e c t r i c a l l y operated c i r c u i t breakers, small motors, magnetic swi tches and s i m i l a r devices, and f o r t h e t r a n s f e r o f meters, i n - struments and re lays . The Type SB-1 sw i t ch i s s u i t a b l e f o r most a p p l i c a t i o n s , b u t where t h e sw i t ch i s sub- j e c t t o abnormal ly f requen t ope ra t i on (approximately 100 opera t i ons o r more per hour, more durab le cams a r e requ i red, i n which case t h e Type SB-9 sw i t ch should be ordered.

RATINGS

A l l swi tches a re r a t e d 600 v o l t s , 20 amperes cont inuous, and 250 amperes f o r t h r e e seconds.

The i n t e r r u p t i n g r a t i n g depends on severa l f a c t o r s ; namely, vo l tage, c u r r e n t , and inductance o f t h e c i r c u i t . It i s o f t e n necessary t o connect severa l con tac ts i n s e r i e s t o secure s u f f i c i e n t i n t e r r u p t i n g capac i ty . The i n t e r r u p t i n g r a t i n g s i n t h e t a b l e below a re based on t h e inductance o f t h e average t r i p c o i l .
