Overview of FA strategy

• To determine, transition, and advance appropriate and applicable codes, tools, and systems to enable DoD HPC scientists and engineers to do their job faster, easier, and more accurately.

• To train DoD HPC scientists and engineers how to use those codes, tools, and systems.

FA Technical OverviewOverview of Efforts for Contract Year 1• Appointed to replace Reagan Moore (SDSC) about November 1, 2001.

• Met with many HPCMO and PET people at SuperComputing 2001 to try to begin to understand my job.

• Scheduled visit to ASC ASAP to talk with the Component 2 TA, Jeff Graham, about desired directions; meeting occurred on Dec 18, 2001.

• During that day 3 focal issues were identified:• ASC/MSRC desire to assist SIMAF

• Ruth Pachter (ASC MSRC Chief Scientist/Government CCM Lead) desire to see some bio-informatics work initiated

• The fact that only 3 ET projects had been funded

engineers who had 1 funded ET project and 1 pending-final-approval ET project (Agrawal, Saltz, Machiraju, and Kurc)

• Convinced them to contact Tim Menke et al to see if they couldn’t modify their pending project to assist the SIMAF.

• The meeting was arranged with the assistance of many at ASC and the results seemed to be positive. However, ET011/012 was never funded and Agrawal’s white paper for a Yr2 project has been rejected.

• Dr. Pachter’s bioinformatics and toxicology interests were communicated to a capable scientist, but the scientist never made contact.

additional ET projects (beyond the first 3) got lost somewhere between Jeff Graham and the program office.

• Efforts were made to get all 4 funded, but due to the NOW effort and the budget reductions, only 2 got funding, and 1 of those was subsequently cut considerably.

• In consultation with Jeff Graham, created a UAP (Jan/Feb 2002)

• Developed a new ET Strategic Plan (Jan/Feb 2002)

• A second (first at ARL) ET-onsite was to be hired (at ASC), but weeks after OSC got the position approved and advertised, the budget reduction froze the position.

Technical (Metrics)User Contacts and Assistance• Tim Menke – assistance in trying to develop common repositories for test data, data

mining techniques, tools for comparing historical data with new simulation and analysis records, and intelligent remote access

• Dr. Ruth Pachter – tried to assist in finding someone interested in bioinformatics and toxicology

• Joe Crepeau, DTRA – assisted slightly with getting some SHAMRC data visualized with Ensight by the ERDC on-site staff (Richard Walters)

• NRL/SSC (Wallcraft, Blain, Keen, et al) – assisted in trying to figure out why their ability to utilize the NAVO/MSRC vislab resources had been curtailed and what would be mutually-beneficial to both groups

• NAVO/MSRC Vislab – delivered VizServer software optimized for low bandwidth connections

• James Rigney, Steve Haeger, Dr. Rob Lorens, and Dr. John Blaha (NAVO) – discussed how they could exploit PET ET for their efforts.

Summary

• Much time and effort spent trying to get pending projects approved and funded

• Funding issues have made planning difficult• Projects going well

– ET005 suffered from non-funding of ET011/012– ET017 and ET022 going very well– ET003/004 and ET019 approved late, yet have

produced results already (and ET003/004 has been cut)

• Onsite at ARL is working closely with DoD users; need onsites at all MSRCs

• Diversity of ET blurs focus and splinters resources

Enabling TechnologiesEnabling technologies involves advancing the state

of the tools, algorithms, and standards for generalized run-time and pre- and post-processing

analysis on enormous datasets. At a minimum, this function will entail visualization, data mining and

knowledge discovery, image analysis, grid generation, problem-solving environments, and computational techniques and methods for the

intelligent extraction of useful information from data.

ET003/004 ResultsFor a test of UTPROJ, a mass-correction of a single TABS-3D velocity for the RIPRAP model, which has a prism mesh of about 16,0000 cells, was run.

The original code took 140 minutes, and the current code took 10.4 minutes.The current code had the following profile on the Cray T3E at NAVO:
