ELT For Young Learners
INTRODUCTION
Teacher's work is now much sought-after. to become a teacher is very easy, but convey
the subject matter that make students interested in the lessons we need to convey a special
way to share knowledge and expertise that we have can we distributed to our students to
perfection. Like when we're teaching elementary school children. We must have good skills
in delivering learning materials, especially English, because English is the language that is
new to them. Topics that I use in my paper is part of the human body, which aims to
introduce it to students in a way that as attractive as possible so that the students more
enthusiastic in following lessons. I will use it to students in grade 4, in encounters 2x each
meeting duration 2 x 35 minutes.
In presenting this material I will use three mediators: songs, stories and games. The third
mediator will cover how the four language skills (reading, speaking, writing and listening)
and the three components of language (grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary). The first
media I use is the song. The song that I would use in introducing the parts of the human body
is "I'm a Little Teapot". This song is very appropriate for students in grade 4, because in this
song the students will be taught is also some movement of the body that resembles an object
in the hope they will better understand and easy to remember the human body parts in
English. With lyrics that are fun and interesting movements when they sing it, the students
will more easily absorb the material presented. From this activity students will acquire two
language skills (listening and speaking) and a component of language (pronunciation) in the
same time.
The second is the story telling. I will use a short story entitled "The Most Important Part
of Human Body" to teach about the human body. I will be telling the students about the most
important body parts and explain the meaning of why that part is very important for every
person. So that the students would be more interested in learning, because in this story is also
pasted on the moral lessons derived from the human body. Then at the end of my activity will
give a few questions related to the stories they had heard earlier that we can know how big
their ability to remember. From this activity students will receive two language skills
(listening and speaking) and the second language component (pronunciation and vocabulary)
as well.
Then the last is to use the game to convey the material. First of all, I will prepare some
pictures of body parts along with complete descriptions, but in every description, not all the
letters I have written. I will eliminate some of the letters in the description, eg the word
'eyes', I would eliminate some of the letters to 'e_e_'. After all the missed words, I will
discuss it together. of this activity students will receive two language skills (reading and
writing) and a component of language (grammar)
DISCUSSION
Parts of the human body is a matter that can be used as a theme in a learning process.
Like when we teach elementary school children, especially grade 1-4, we can use it as a
theme, because to know the body parts in English, they would be interested to learn English
even harder. But before we start the lesson, it is good we know and understand the
characteristics of each of the elementary students. Because in those days they were our age as
a teacher would be very difficult to convey the material if we are not smart strategy to set the
pass. To convey my material to the students about the parts of human body, I will use 3
mediator of songs, stories and games to foster interest in learning for students.
First, I will use the song to convey the material. Here I will present my material using the
song. First of all, I will prepare songs that relate to the human body. Then I will sing first,
accompanied by a corresponding movement with the song, after which I will invite them to
sing along with demonstrating simultaneously. Then, after singing together I will explain the
meaning of the song. This activity may take approximately 35 menit.
I’m a Little Teapot
I’m a little teapot, short and stout
Here is my handle (one hand on hip), here is my spout (other arm out straight)
When I get all steamed up, hear me shout
Just tip me over and pour me out!
( as song ends, lean over and tip arm out like a spout )
I’m a clever teapot, yes it’s true
Here’s an example of what I can do
I can change my handle to my spout (switch arm positions and repeat tipping motion)
Just tip me over and pour me out
after singing the song above I hope the students are able to recognize the parts of the
body and know that their body parts can be likened to an object. and from this activity the
students will get two language skills (listening and speaking) and a component of language
(pronunciation) in the same time.
The second, I will use the stories in delivering the material. The first I will prepare a short
story, then membacakanya to the students. The story which I will use is "What is the most
Important part of the body?". After hearing this story I will give you a few questions related
to the story above, then discuss it together and explain the meaning of the story.
"What is the most important part of the body?"
My Dad used to ask me: "What is the most important part of the body?"
Through the years I would take a guess at what I thought was the correct answer. When I was
younger, I thought sound was very important to us as humans, so I said, "My ears, Dad."
Dad said, "Not Many people are deaf. But you keeps thinking about it and I’ll ask you again
soon."
Several years passed before he asked me again. Since making my 1st attempt, I had
contemplated the correct answer. So this time I told him, "Dad, it must be our eyes."
Dad looked at me and told me, "You are learning fast, but the answer isn’t correct because there
are many people whoa reblind."
Stumped again, I continued my quest for knowledge. Over the years, Dad asked me the same
thing and always his answer was, "No, but you are getting smarter every year."
Then last year, my grandpa died. Everybody was hurt. Even my Dad cried. I remember, because
it was only the second time I saw him cry. My Mom looked at me when it was our turn to say
our final good-bye to Grandpa. Dad asked me, "Do you know the most important body part yet,
my dear?"
I was shocked when he asked me this now. Dad saw the confusion on my face and told me,
"This question is very important. It shows that you have really lived in your life. For every body
part you gave me in the past, I have told you was wrong & I have given you an example why.
But today is the day you need to learn this important lesson."
Dad looked down at me, and said, "My dear, the most important body part is your shoulder."
"It is because it can hold the head of a loved one when they cry. Everybody needs a shoulder to
cry on sometime in life, my dear. I only hope that you have enough love and friends that you will
always have a shoulder to cry on when you need it."
Now I knew the shoulders are not a selfish one. It is sympathetic to the pain of others. People
will forget what you said... People will forget what you did.... But people will NEVER forget
how you made them feel. Get your shoulder ready..
.
After hearing the story the students will get a lot of things that will foster their passion for
learning much better. Because the story above contains a very good moral values, so in addition
will get two language skills (listening and speaking) and the second language component
(pronunciation and vocabulary) as well, they will also get the moral education of the stories we
read above.
And the last is to use the game. I will prepare besarta picture caption. But in a statement
that I would eliminate some of the letters, so students must complete to fit the image that is
then read it together after all the details and in accordance with the drawings.
Fill in the blank with the correct answer!
After finish this activity the students will get two language skills (reading and writing)
and a component of language (grammar)
CONCLUSION
Parts of the human body are very attractive when used as a theme in a learning, especially
for elementary students. But keep in mind that every child, especially elementary school children
have a very bebeda character sometimes we are also surprised to know the character of each of
them. Therefore in the present material we should understand it first, so that we can deliver our
material to them to perfection and with the right methods and they can be happy to receive our
material.
