Character :

Jack : Jack is five years old. He was born and raised in Room. He’s so shock when he finds out that there is more to the world than Room.

Ma : Ma is twenty-seven. I never know her real name because Jack only calls her Ma. She kidnapped by Old Nick when she was nineteen and spends eight years inside Room. She has two children while in Room: the first, a daughter, who is stillborn, and Jack.

Old Nick : He is the man who kidnapped Ma when she was nineteen and locked her in a room in his backyard. He rapes her regularly. I never know his real name, but Jack calls him Old Nick because of something he saw on TV about an evil man named Old Nick.

Grandma: She is Ma's mother. Although her daughter had run away, she always believed that she was still alive.

Steppa (Leo): Leo is Jack’s step-grandpa, whom he calls Steppa. Steppa is a good man. He gets along well with Jack.

Paul: Paul is Ma's brother. Since she disappeared, he's married Deana and had a young daughter, Bronwyn.

Grandpa: He is Ma’s dad. Grandpa has a more difficult time dealing with his daughter's return. He can’t accept the fact that Jack exists because his daughter was raped.

Dr. Clay: Dr. Clay is the doctor who helps Ma and Jack adapted with the Outside world. Noreen: Noreen is the nurse who helps Dr Clay to take care of Jack and his Ma.

Plot :

Jack and his Ma spent the last five years inside of Room. They lived with other objects like Chair, Rug, Skylight, Door, and more. Jack consider ‘them’ as his friend. Every night, Jack went to sleep inside Wardrobe because most nights a man called Old Nick comes in, get in bed with Ma, and made ‘some creaky noises’. A lot of things weren't right here. Room was also a place where Ma has been kept ever since she was kidnapped by Old Nick seven years ago. She gave birth Jack in the Room.

When Ma discovered that Old Nick lost his job, Ma was afraid that she and Jack would starve to death. So, she came up with a plan to escape: Jack will pretend to be dead and get rolled up in Rug. Old Nick will bury Jack far from the house. Jack will escape when Old Nick stops at a stop sign.

The plan actually went well. Old Nick almost caught Jack, but a man walking his dog and young daughter scared Old Nick away and called the cops. The cops found Ma and caught Old Nick. After that, Ma and Jack try to adapted with the Outside World and the society. They stayed at a Clinic where they are treated by Dr. Clay and his nurse, Noreen. Ma also reunited with her mother and new stepfather. Ma and Jack also get to know Ma's brother, Paul, and his wife and daughter.

After an emotionally talk-show appearance, Jack went to the mall with Paul and his family. When they returned, Ma has attempted suicide by ODing on pills. Jack to Grandma's house and grandma took care of him until Ma recovered.

When Ma has been recovered, she and Jack moved in to an apartment. Jack wanted to go back to see Room and Ma agreed. Jack says goodbye to it. He is ready to start a new chapter of his life with Ma.

Room is a great novel to read because the plot of the story is so unexpected and unbelieveable. The more I read it, the more I curious about the end of the story because the author write it with simple sentences with complex meanings and didn’t tell what the story mean directly. What I liked best about this book is its plot because we can’t really guessing about what’s happen next in the story so we have to read it until the last page of this book.What I liked least about this book is that I couldn’t understand it directly because the book has a twisted plot and also I’m lack of English vocabulary.
