2.4 How else can you help the Referee?

• Support his decisions• Keep his confidence up• Keep his concentration• Be decisive• Be prepared to accept being over-ruled• Look after him before and after the match

Pre-Match Duties



2.5 (a) Pre-match Communication

• Referee will contact Assistant Referees in the week before the match to confirm:– Kick-off time and desired time of arrival– Colour of kit to be worn


2.5 (b) Stud Check• Referee will agree a convenient time with both captains• Assistant Referees will examine both teams’ studs• Players should be asked to change illegal and

dangerous studs• If in doubt, ask the Referee to check


2.5 (c) Assistant Referees’ Brief

• Referee will inform Assistant Referees of what he requires of them during the match

• Each Referee’s brief will be different in places• Remember your principal responsibilities i.e. Touch, Touch in-goal

and Foul Play• Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you are unclear


2.5 (d) Captains’ Brief

• You will be invited to attend the Captains’ brief • Remember that you are an integral part of the “Team of Three”• Opportunity for the referee to build rapport with Captains


2.10 Dealing with Foul Play

• If foul play is observed, Assistant Referee should open up his field of vision and look for retaliation

• Assistant Referee must then signal foul play• Assistant Referee must then continue with his normal duties• Assistant Referee must concentrate on what he has seen to form the

words he will use in his report to the Referee, including a sanction if asked for one.

2.10 Reporting Foul Play

• Assistant Referee may be invited onto the field of play by the Referee to report his observations

• The Assistant Referee should not report to the Referee until asked to do so

• The following should then be reported:– Who – Number(s) and team(s) committing offence(s)– What – The nature of the offence(s)– Where – The place of the offence(s)



• Concentrate on WHO did WHAT to whom WHERE• It may be a minute or more before you are able to report to the

Referee• If you are not sure, DO NOT MAKE IT UP



• When reporting foul play, the Assistant Referee’s verbal communication should be:– Calm, Accurate, Concise (CAC),

• His non-verbal communication should be:– Relaxed, Assured, Confident (RAC)



• The Referee may ask the Assistant Referee for a recommended sanction, which will be either:– Admonishment– Caution or– Sending from the field of play

• Please be aware that the Referee may decide upon a different course of action



• Remember that you are only advising the Referee of the incident and that it is his responsibility to make the final decision.

• If the Referee has not seen the incident, he will invariably be influenced by the Assistant Referee’s report

2.11 Advisory signals• Can be given for:

• Should only be given when the Referee is looking at the Assistant Referee
