CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DELIVERY

Duration All one day courses involve a day’s tutor delivery, with additional time for breaks and lunch. This varies slightly between courses.

Venue For practical courses a room with plenty of indoor space that also has access to chairs, tables, a projector and screen, such as a school hall is ideal. For a theory course, a classroom, projection facilities, a screen, wireless internet access and a flipchart will be required.

The format of all of our courses provides numerous opportunities to share and develop ideas in collaboration with other practitioners.

Delivery Our courses are organised and administered by the purchaser. The recommended number of delegates is 15-25 delegates per event. Additional charges will apply for over 25 delegates to cover the cost of additional tutors.

The Youth Sport Trust will supply the tutor, content and resources for your course. Any other costs of delivering the course are to be met by the course organiser.

When requesting a course, we require a minimum of eight weeks’ notice.

Prices Youth Sport Trust cluster coordinators: £650 per course

Member schools: £1,125 per course

Non-member schools or organisations: £1,250 per course

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Member schools and Clusters of members are able to purchase additional benefits from Youth Sport Trust throughout the period of their membership, accessing the member rate where one is available. Please note that only YST Cluster Coordinators are able to access additional professional learning events at the heavily subsidised rate of £650 as a recognition of the partnership with the YST and ongoing work they do at a local level.

Members and Clusters Coordinators must comply with the terms and conditions associated with each additional benefit.

• Members and Clusters must pay any additional invoices promptly and YST retains the right to cancel any additional benefits, should payment not have been made.

• Members and Cluster Coordinators must adhere to the following terms when purchasing a membership professional learning event.

• Courses must be requested with a minimum of eight weeks’ notice.• Courses must be organised, administered and paid for by the Cluster for their schools.• The content and tutor will be supplied by YST.• The minimum number of delegates required is eight.• All delivery costs must be covered locally (e.g. venue and refreshments).• A course must be paid for 14 days prior to course delivery.• If a Cluster Coordinator cancels a course within 14 days of the delivery date, delivery of the

course will be forfeited. • If a course is cancelled by the member school or the Cluster Coordinator less than 14 days

prior to the delivery date and the YST are charged by the assigned Tutor, the member school or the Cluster Coordinator will be liable for this payment.

• If there are mitigating circumstances, a member or Cluster Coordinator can reschedule a course at least 14 days prior to the delivery date. A Cluster Coordinator is only permitted to reschedule a course once before delivery of the course will be forfeited.

• If YST are unable to service a course 14 days or more prior to delivery, YST will work with the member or Cluster Coordinator to reschedule the course.

• If YST are unable to service a course within 14 days of the delivery the course will be rescheduled if possible, or the full cost of the course will be refunded.

• All rescheduled courses must be delivered before the end of the academic year.• YST accepts no financial responsibility for any costs incurred when cancelling or

rescheduling a course.

HEALTHY MOVERS1.1

Healthy Movers is a one day course for reception teachers and early years practitioners in pre-school settings that focuses on how to develop the whole child through engaging, purposeful physical activities in the early years supporting the EYFS framework. It is also suitable for KS1 teachers and adults other than teachers who are looking to extend their practice.

It will provide theory and practical ideas using the Youth Sport Trust Healthy Movers resource alongside the Healthy Movers at Home resource which is a set of games and activities to get children moving at home. The activities are designed to develop balance, movement and using objects in a fun and engaging way, and feature PJ Masks superheroes Catboy, Owlette and Gekko.

available at an additional cost to the training.

TOP START (FORMERLY START TO MOVE)1.2

For the practitioner: For the children the practitioner teaches:

• Increased confidence and competence in teaching KS1 PE.

• Gain a clear understanding of how PE can support whole child development ie, thinking, social, healthy and creative aspects.

• Understand how to adapt and differentiate to ensure all children are supported through this approach.

• Focuses on whole child development (thinking, social, healthy and creative learners) through PE.

• Provides children with a strong movement foundation, allowing them to become increasingly confident and competent movers to inspire them to become the next generation of fit and healthy adults.

TOP Start is a one day practical course for reception, KS1 teachers and adults other than teachers who would like to develop their confidence in teaching PE to 4-7 year olds. It is a practical course that introduces delegates to the fundamental movement skills of stability, locomotion and object control that PE lessons for 4-7 year olds should focus on.

Through exploring the fun activities on the 28 TOP Start resource cards, delegates will be introduced to a wide variety of exercises that they can use to develop children’s stability, locomotion and object control in a fun and enjoyable way. Encouraging children to first of all explore movement before applying their new repertoire of skills into ‘games like’ situations.

Following attendance at a face to face training session, delegates have access to an online resources area that includes a downloadable pdf of the 28 TOP Start cards and a guidance document that will help delegates to use the cards to design a series of lessons.

Additional information For maximum impact it is recommended a class of KS1 children are available for the afternoon session to allow delegates to explore and develop the TOP Start approach with a group of children.

TOP PE – The Principles is a one day practical course for KS2 teachers and adults other than teachers who would like to develop their confidence in teaching PE to 7-11 year olds. It is a practical course that builds on the fundamental movement skills of stability, locomotion and object control developed through TOP Start and introduces delegates to the fundamental sports and activity specific skills that PE lessons for 5-11 year olds should focus on.

Delegates spend longer on a wide variety of exercises that they can use to develop not only children’s physical skills but also proactively develop their thinking, healthy, creative and social skills, through exploring the fun activities on the activity specific TOP PE resource cards. The cards and training also explore the use of higher order questioning skills within the delivery of a PE lesson to further challenge children’s learning and focus on ideas for adapting activities to include and develop all the children in a class.

At a face to face training session, delegates will receive a hard copy of a sample pack of cards used during the training.

TOP PE (Athletics, Challenge, Dance Games and Gymnastics) are five, one day practical courses for KS2 teachers and adults other than teachers who would like to further develop their confidence and competence in teaching 7-11 year olds the activity specific skills relevant to the course attending.

Delegates are introduced to a wide variety of practical exercises that they can use to develop not only children’s activity specific physical skills but also proactively develop their thinking, healthy, creative and social skills. The training also explores the use of higher order questioning skills within the delivery of the curriculum area to further challenge children’s learning and focuses on ideas for adapting activities to include and develop all children in a class.

Following attendance at a face to face training session, delegates will receive a delegate handbook (Athletics, Games and Gymnastics) and access to an online resources area (Gymnastics and Games).

For the practitioner: For the children the practitioner teaches:

• Ability to plan and deliver athletics, challenge, dance, games or gymnastics to KS2 children with increased confidence and competence.

• Differentiate using the STEP process to enable appropriate challenge for all children.

• Develop the whole child through a multi-skill approach to teaching to develop their physical, thinking, social, creative and healthy attributes.

High Quality PE is a one day theory course for all teachers and adults other than teachers who are delivering PE lessons and would like to review and challenge the quality of their practical delivery. Understanding the components of high quality PE and how to apply them to achieve high quality outcomes with children in PE lessons. It is particularly suited for delegates who would like to challenge the quality of learning in their PE lessons in line with Ofsted expectations.

Following attendance at a face to face training session, delegates will observe and review a number of video clips of PE lessons where they will be able to analyse the learning and identify key strengths and areas for development. Delegates will then have time to reflect and review their current practice and identify an area of focus for their return to school.

For the practitioner: For the children the practitioner teaches:

• An understanding of what high quality PE is and why it is important.

• An understanding of the Ofsted expectations of high quality PE.

• An understanding of how pace, differentiation, progression, pupil ownership and leadership can transform a lesson.

• Development of a positive attitude and commitment to learning and making progress, in and through PE that meets their needs and interests.

• An understanding of why PE is important, what they need to learn and how it impacts across different learning environments.

Builds generic skill development when participating in extra-curricular activities through a range of play activities that focus on locomotion, object control and stability.

TOP PLAY AND TOP SPORT

TOP Play (KS1 extra-curricular PE) and TOP Sport (KS2 extra-curricular PE) are two, half day practical courses for teachers and adults other than teachers who would like to apply their learning from attending a TOP Start (formerly Start to Move) or TOP PE – The Principles course to lunchtime and extra-curricular activities.

Through exploring the fun activities on the TOP Play and TOP Sport resource cards, delegates are introduced to a wide variety of exercises that they can use to develop not only children’s physical skills but also proactively develop their thinking, healthy, creative and social skills during lunchtime and extra-curricular activities.

The cards and training also focus on ideas for adapting activities to include and develop all children at a lunchtime and extra-curricular activity and can be used by young leaders who are helping with the activity. The activities included in the additional multi-skill festival cards could be set up twice a term and used as a simple assessment of children’s ability or individual activities could be set up each day for children to challenge themselves and to practice.

Many delegates have also used the ideas on the TOP Play and TOP Sport resource cards during their curriculum PE lessons. Following attendance at a face to face training session, delegates will receive a hard copy of a sample pack of cards used during the training.

TOP Transition is a one-day practical course for primary PE Leads and their feeder secondary school PE department.

TOP Transition has been designed as a series of Core Learning Tasks (CLTs) in physical education enabling practitioners in primary and secondary schools to collaborate and plan for a seamless approach to recognising pupils’ progress from upper Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 alongside support for their social and emotional wellbeing.

3.0 PE AND SPORT AS A TOOL FOR WHOLE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT

My Personal Best Primary is a one day course for primary school headteachers and the PE lead.

It is a whole school approach to teaching and learning in PE, where life skills and values, such as cooperation, responsibility and resilience are taught explicitly through practical PE. It explores life skills in practical ways in PE, helping children to recognise the skills and transfer them to other lessons, to life in school, and to their wider lives – now and for the future, so they can be the best they can be – in every way.

The approach was written in consultation with primary headteachers and practitioners in Lancashire and piloted in 30 schools across the county in 2017/18.

The day consists of two parts:

Part one for Headteachers and the PE Lead (approximately three hours) will:• Explain the importance of developing pupils’ life skills.• Recognise what ‘life-skilled’ looks like in your pupils.• Identify the potential to develop life skills through PE.• Describe how My Personal Best Primary could be embedded in your school.

Part two for the PE Lead will:• Demonstrate a life skills approach to teaching and learning in PE.• Plan how to implement a life skills approach in your teaching of PE.

ROLE OF THE SCHOOL GOVERNOR IN MAXIMISING THE IMPACT OF THE PRIMARY PE AND SPORT PREMIUM

Aims to give primary Governors information and advice about how to maximise the impact of the government primary investment in PE and school sport. This workshop will explore how to ensure high quality PE is offered to all students and why it should be the entitlement of every child. It will also expand on accountability measures and pose key questions for Governors to consider.

POWER OF AN ACTIVE SCHOOL BITESIZE

The Power of an Active School supports school to increase physical activity throughout the school day. This bitesize version will allow schools to look at their school context and identify area where activity can take place with some simple solutions. This should be done as a precursor to ‘Bringing Active 30:30 to life’.

Aims to give PE coordinators and practitioners support in planning an appropriate and challenging 4-7 years PE curriculum that meets the needs of all their learners by a stage not age approach and where physical activity and school sport can support this.
