January 2018 Dear lifelong learner:

Happy New Year! I hope 2018 will be a year of learning and professional development for you all.

We were delighted by the interest in all our courses during first term and the response to the sessions held in Wolfville, Sydney, St. John’s, and Moncton. Your feedback is invaluable to us. Please continue to tell us what you liked, what you found most useful, and what you would like to see in the future.

This term we are pleased to offer courses in Fredericton and Truro, make learning opportunities available in these centres. We are also introducing a new initiative this year with the aim of making learning more accessible to an even wider audience. In February, Dr. Sachin Seth and Dr. Martin Gillis will deliver a live webinar, which will be available afterward in a taped format. The topic is PDBNS–Dental Record Keeping Guidelines. Watch out for further details.

As spring approaches, the 6th annual Bike and Learn will take place in Northern France and Belgium between March 31 and April 8. Please register early for this course because it sells out quickly.

Looking ahead to September, please put Homecoming 2018, September 27-29, on your calendars. Not only will there be a great line-up of CDE courses that weekend, but there will be tours of the newly renovated clinic, lectures, the White Coat ceremony, and other events to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Dalhousie University.

A big thank you goes out to all our participants and sponsors for their ongoing support. We look forward to seeing you at events this term.

With kind regards,

Catherine Lyle Manager Continuing Dental Education

Please display this catalogue in your office so that all members of your team have access to these continuing education opportunities.

An evening of CE for clinicians while supporting our students’ educationDENTAL CARE PROVIDERS AND UNIVERSITY MEMBERS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND

DENTISTRY STUDENT TABLE CLINICSThis year marks the 48th anniversary for student table clinics at Dalhousie University. A table clinic is a brief (5-10 minute) oral presentation on areas of clinical application and techniques, or they can be basic science, research, or oral health promotion. The table clinic exercise is a student-centred learning activity that is completed with the support of a faculty advisor. Students begin by selecting a topic they wish to present. They will thoroughly research the topic and provide a critical analysis, conclusions, and recommendations. Alternatively, students may conduct an original research project and present their results and conclusions. As part of their course requirements, students are required to present a topic on Student Table Clinics Night. The students can use display boards in their presentation. Clinical and research equipment and materials may also be displayed.

DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENT PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATIONSSecond year dental hygiene students select and research topics of their choice with the support of a faculty advisor. Groups of four students give 15-20 minute presentations focusing on the best practice standards of care. A brochure summarizing key information will be available.

Porcelain veneers from A to Z: A hands-on programDR. EFFIE HABSHA, BSc, DDS, Dip Prostho, MSc, FRCD (C)

Effie Habsha received her BSc and DDS from the University of Toronto. After graduation, she completed a one-year general practice residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and received her Diploma in Prosthodontics and MSc from the University of Toronto. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC), an examiner and section head for the Oral Examination in Prosthodontics for the RCDC, and an adjunct assistant professor at the Department of Dentistry, Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She has served as an assistant professor at the University of Toronto and currently instructs both at the undergraduate and graduate level in prosthodontics there.

COURSE OUTLINEPorcelain veneers offer patients an immediate enhancement of their smile. Improvements to the colour, shape and alignment of teeth can be readily achieved with porcelain veneers. To achieve ideal results, the clinician must select appropriate cases and implement specific clinical protocols. Failure to develop a treatment plan and execute tooth preparation, impression, temporization, and cementation can result in catastrophic outcomes.

The focus of this hands-on session is to provide the general practitioner with key insights in achieving predictable, esthetic outcomes with porcelain veneers. In the first part of the session, we will review prosthodontic treatment planning as well as the indications and contraindications for porcelain veneers. A step-by-step approach to tooth preparation, impression, temporization, and cementation will follow. Clinical examples of porcelain veneers will be presented. The hands-on component will recap the didactic session, giving course participants the opportunity to prepare, impress, and temporize the maxillary anteriors on a typodont.

COURSE OBJECTIVESBy the end of the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Review the indications and contraindications for porcelain veneers• Review appropriate treatment planning for porcelain veneers• Review the clinical protocol for veneer fabrication, including tooth preparation, temporization,

impression, and veneer cementation• Prepare, impress, and temporize a maxillary typodont for porcelain veneers through hands-on

opportunities to fabricate a silicone matrix

Evidence-based Q & A in periodontics and implant dentistryDR. NADER HAMDAN, BDS, MSc, MDent (Perio), FRCD(C), DIPLOMATE ABP

Nader Hamdan is an assistant professor and director of the graduate periodontics program at Dalhousie University. He practised general dentistry for 12 years before pursuing an MSc Dental Sciences program at McGill University, followed by a combined master-specialty program in periodontics at the University of Manitoba. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He has many scientific publications and is an invited speaker nationally and internationally.

COURSE OUTLINE

Periodontics as a clinical science and implant dentistry, as a companion discipline, has made impressive advances in the last few decades. Both disciplines have progressed in knowledge, materials, and techniques. However, there remain questions that face practising dental care providers on a daily basis during routine patient care. The course will review those critical questions/scenarios and provide evidence-based answers to the most common questions and situations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the end of the course, participants will be able to provide evidence-based answers to the most common questions and clinical scenarios routinely asked in dental offices that provide periodontology and/or dental implantology services. Topics include:

• Aetiology, diagnosis, and prognosis• Non-surgical therapy• Different options for periodontal procedures/surgeries• Post-surgical healing/management and complications• Periodontal maintenance therapy
