Tim Harrington Executive Director

Dear Friends:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and staff of The Ability Center (ACT), thank you for your continued support. We work tirelessly every day to meet the needs of people with disabilities and their families. Our service is a direct result of those who believe in our mission and support our work. From our giving societies to school-led fundraisers, all our partners have a role in our success. In return, we must deliver on the values of independent living by assertively pursuing the elimination of barriers in the communities we serve. The Ability Center must also remain relevant as the needs of the disability community change.

This year, ACT marked many firsts that warrant recognition. Katie Hunt-Thomas, staff attorney for ACT, published a booklet titled, “The Rights of People with Disabilities in Inclusive Neighborhoods.” This important guide for housing officials and advocates puts in layman’s terms the rights of persons with disabilities in seeking housing that meets their needs. This project was underwritten through the generous support of the Ohio Department of Medicaid and the Ohio State Bar Association.

As we build on the success of our youth transition programming, we welcomed Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) as a partner for the Next Steps Summer Program. The five- week program based at the University of Toledo offers students with disabilities the opportunity to experience living outside of their parents’ home for the first time. Students work during the day at area employers, and OOD provides reimbursement for their hourly wages.

Leadership development among members of the disability community is critical to ACT to ensure sustainability in the independent living movement. This summer, University of Toledo Disability Studies students Nick Hyndman and Katie Shelley worked at ACT to learn the scope of our programs and developed valuable work skills by managing important projects. We will continue this program to prepare young adults with disabilities for leadership opportunities in the workplace.

The alignment between donor goals and agency needs has been spot on this year. We were fortunate to have our multipurpose room transformed into a state-of-the-art boardroom which also hosts our independent living classes. Room renovations served as a tribute to our former Board President Gerald P. Openlander, by his daughter, Suzanne Frankie. Corporate sponsors for naming our puppies now include ProMedica Physicians Central Billing Office, Trinity Door Systems Inc., and Supplemental Staffing.

Thrilled with the turnout of our first ACT Open House, we welcomed over 200 individuals to our campus. Long-time supporters mingled with first-time visitors, as staff presented information about our programs and services. Beautiful weather, picnic food, and reggae music provided the rationale for turning it into an annual event. We will see you there.

Sincerely,

Colleen Mandell Chair, Board of Trustees

PUPPY ENRICHMENT INITIATIVE

To house the future assistance dogs and support the enrichment initiative, our organization is proud to announce the transformation of part of the ADAI kennel into The Logie Center (TLC) for Canine Enrichment. Bill and Susan Logie are the generous benefactors of the project. Growth for this innovative program and expansion of community involvement would not have been possible without this financial contribution. Modifications included glass-doored kennel runs, outdoor play area protected from the elements, and the creation of an indoor visitation space. The remodeled outdoor space has been outfitted with puppy playground equipment funded by the Auxiliary to The Ability Center, as well as a stair and ramp platform custom built by The Ability Center’s Housing Resource Center staff. ADAI is energized by this plan and excited to build on the strong foundation created by the time, talents, and treasures of passionate volunteers, dedicated staff, and community-minded donors.

For two to four weeks, the puppies train at our facility during the day and go home with volunteer sitters each night and weekend. Fosters then attend a Puppy Launch educational session designed to share basic information about living and working with an ADAI puppy. Graduation from the Puppy Smart Start Program marks the transition to full-time training in the home of the foster while attending weekly trainings at The Ability Center.

The Ability Center’s Assistance Dogs for Achieving Independence (ADAI) Program has experienced many changes over the course of 2017, and one of the most exciting changes has been the development and launch of the Puppy Smart Start Program. Sparked from research and comparison to similar models from other agencies, ADAI is unveiling this program focused on increasing the amount of early enrichment provided to puppies at the beginning of their training journey to become certified assistance dogs.
