Iguassu Falls Iguassu Falls: one of the world’s top ten wonders.

Ride a boat up to the edge of the falls.

Argentina

Overview

Considered by many one of the world’s top ten wonders, Iguassu Falls is formed by over 275 separate waterfalls cascading from the top of a horseshoe-shaped canyon in an overwhelming spectacle of sound and color. The falls stretch along the border of Argentina and Brazil, serving as a natural divide between the two countries. Even though 70% of the falls are located on the Argentinean side, most of them face the Brazilian side, which is a main reason why they should be visited from both. Major’s single attraction is the "Devil´s Throat" (Argentinean side), where the largest volume of water falls with a strong,

thunderous roar that can be heard miles away. Surrounding Iguassu National Park, originally established to protect the falls, covers 450,000 acres of subtropical forest and harbors a large range of fauna and flora. Adventurous spirits can enjoy different activities in the park including hiking, mountain biking, rappelling, canopy tours, rock climbing and rafting.

When to go

Best time to see the falls at its full is during the rainy season (November-February) although that may mean cold and dreary days. Dry season (April-July) is characterized by warm and sunny days but water levels will be at their lowest. If you want a compromise, choose March, August, September and October.

Highlights

• The Devil’s Throat: The world’s mightiest waterfall. (Argentinean side)• The “Walkways”: Experience a full, panoramic view of the 275+ falls (Brazilian side) and meet the coatimundis, the park’s most popular inhabitants. • Macuco Safari Tour: Ride a boat up to the edge of the falls and learn about Iguassu National Park while riding a special train through the forest. • Helicopter Tours: A bird’s eye of the natural wonder. Highly recommended. • Itaipu Dam: A tour of the world’s largest hydroelectric complex

Puerto Madryn

Colonies of sea lions (Puerto Piramides).

Magellanic penguins (Punta Tombo).

Whale-watching boat excursions

Argentina

Overview

Puerto Madryn is a city in the province of Chubut and has about 58,000 inhabitants. The town was founded on 28 July 1865. Puerto Madryn is protected by the Golfo Nuevo, which is formed by Península Valdés and Punta Ninfas. It is an important centre for tourists visiting the natural attractions of the Península Valdés and the coast. The Valdes Peninsula is a peninsula along the Atlantic coast. Its size is about 3,625 km2. (The nearest large town is Puerto Madryn). It is an important nature reserve which was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. The coastline is inhabited by marine mammals, like sea

lions, elephant seals and fur seals. Southern right whales can be found in Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José, protected bodies of water located between the peninsula and the Patagonian mainland. These baleen whales come here between May and December, for mating and giving birth, because the water in the gulf is quieter and warmer than in the open sea. Orcas can be found off the coast, in the open sea off the peninsula. In this area, they are known to beach themselves on shore to capture sea lions and elephant seals. The inner part of the peninsula is inhabited by rheas, guanacos and maras. A high diversity and range of birds live in the peninsula as well; at least 181 bird species, 66 of which migratory, live in the area, including the Antarctic Pigeon.

When to go

Best time is July-December, when you can do whale watching boat excursions (highly recomended) and when days are longer. Although Patagonia’s weather is unpredictable, summer is characterized by sunny days and cool nights.

Calchaquies" valleys.

Argentina

Overview

Andean Argentina is a region of rich Indian heritage. Beautiful scenery includes deep canyons, striking desert landscapes of sand and cactus, and unique rock formations. Salta (population 370,000), features perfectly preserved colonial architecture, and is the region’s cultural center. Daily visitor excursions are popular to nearby Indian villages, colonial towns, natural monuments, local wineries, and a ride on the Train to the Clouds, one of the world’s highest railways (Saturdays, April-October). The city of Salta still has a distinctly Hispanic feel to it, an urban skyline distinguished by the

colonial architecture of its original buildings and churches which has also influenced more modern construction to the point where the main square is a charming monument to neo-colonial style. The streets in the old part of the town run between old Andalusian houses with their tiled roofs, thick white washed walls and wrought-iron balconies brightened by scarlet and fuchsia geraniums.

When to go

Salta enjoys a balmy weather year ‘round with temperatures averaging 72F.

Highlights

• National Parks: Excursions to nearby national parks featuring spectacular natural formations, archaeological sites and prehistoric indigenous villages.• Wine tours: The region is becoming one of Argentina’s emergent wine producers. • Train to the Clouds: A fascinating train ride on one of the world’s highest railways.• Wilderness Trekking.

Southern Pearl Argentina

Overview

Nineteenth-century shipwrecks and a plethora of marine life are among the attractions awaiting visitors to the Falkland Islands. The islands may well be known as the battle ground of the eponymous 1982 war between Britain and Argentina, but this archipelago in the Atlantic is an intriguing and relaxing holiday destination.Wildlife lovers will find five different species of penguins, whales, and sea birds. Head to Volunteer Point for the islands' largest group of king penguins, and there are a predictably vast amount of sea lions to be found on Sea Lion Island. Most of the Falkland Islands' population live in the capital

Stanley, over whose harbor much avian life can be seen circling above the waves.

MILITARY HISTORYThe isles have been discovered (1592), conquered, abandoned, reconquered and envied in successive occupations by the French (1764), Spanish(1766), Argentinians (1820 and 1982) and English (1592, 1690, 1833 and 1892) up to the war of 1982. In 1833 the English navy threw out the Argentinians and took sovereignty of the isles. There was then a period of 150 years of peace apart from the two world wars in which the strategic value of the Isles was demonstrated. In December 1914 a squadron of the British navy based in Stanley fought the German navy and retook control of the South Atlantic. On 2nd April 1982, Argentina took back possession of the Isles. This action was supported by the majority of Latin American states in spite of their opposition to the regime of the Argentinian junta. England, thanks to the determination of its government and the capacity of its armed forces, managed to reconquer the Isles in two months with the support of the United Nation Security Council. On the 14th June the Argentinians were defeated after violent fighting .

EL CALAFATE

A small frontier village, El Calafate (pop. 8,000) is situated along the southern border of Lake Argentino along the southwest part of the Santa Cruz Province in the heart of the Patagonia Region. Characterized by vast, open pampas; the colossal Northern and Southern Ice Fields and hundreds of glaciers formed more than 200.000 years ago; the jagged peaks of the Andes as they reach their terminus. This is home to Argentina’s coastal wildlife sanctuaries, a region of extreme natural beauty, famed for Perito Moreno Glacier.

AMAZON RIVER

The rivers on Amazon are “highways” in land. Thus, to navigate through the rivers is the natural way to know and recognize the region allowing a closer contact of the man with Nature, discovering each day the reality of a new and authentic place, in small groups that respect the ecosystem.

RIO DE JANEIRO

Rio de Janeiro is considered one of the world most beautiful and fascinating cities. Rio is squeezed in between the green mountains of the coastal rainforest and tropical beaches at the shores of the

Atlantic Ocean. One should not miss out a stroll through the historical part of the city, Corcovado and Sugar Loaf. Colorful, loud and busy, the city displays colonial architecture in contrast with modern office buildings, banks and business centers.

BUENOS AIRES

Founded twice, first in February of 1536 by Don Pedro de Mendoza and the second time by the vasco Don Juan de Garay on June 24, 1580, it is Argentina’s capital, popularly known as the “Paris of South America,” is one of the world’s most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities. Built in the 19th century, an era of plenty for Argentina’s wealthy gaucho land barons, Buenos Aires blends old world charm with modern convenience. Today the city of three million is a mosaic as varied and diverse as its culture. Small, highly individualized neighborhoods each proudly display distinct characteristics and colors. As long as European arquitecture is concerned, many streets recall those of Paris. Its numberless museums, exposition and comference centres, art galleries, cinemas and theatres with national and international spectacles of high quality, are witnesses of its important cul-tural life. Its nightlife is quite varied and extendsup to the ealy hours. Discos, restaurants, cafeterias and many other attractions for all tastes are spread all around the city offering the tourist a large number of options.

Overview

Belo Horizonte is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, located in the southeastern region of Brazil. It is the third-largest metropolitan area in the country. Belo Horizonte has a population of over 2.4 million, or almost 5.4 million in the official Metropolitan Area. The region was first settled in the early 18th century, but the city as it is known today was planned and constructed in the 1890s, in order to replace Ouro Preto as the capital of Minas Gerais. The city features a mixture of contemporary and classical buildings, and hosts several modern Brazilian architectural icons, most notably the Pampulha Complex. In planning

the city, Aarão Reis and Francisco Bicalho sought inspiration in the urban planning of Washington D.C. Belo Horizonte is the entrance door to visit the Historical Cities Ouro Preto, Mariana, Tiradentes, Sao Joao del Rey.

When to go

Although the climate of Belo Horizonte is tropical, it is still considered to be relatively mild. Contrary to popular belief, instead of there being only two seasons, there are slight variations between spring and summer, as well as contrasts between autumn and winter.

Brasilia Brazil

Overview

For centuries, civilization did not portrude into Brazil far from the coastline. The vast majority of the population was there, trade was there, cities were there. It has always been a dream of the Brazilian government to move the capital inland - thereby gaining more control of the vast interior of the country.

This dream did not become reality until the 1950's, when Brazilian president Kubitchek decided Brazil needed a monumental capital if it was ever to become a world power.

The modernist architecture is stunning. Many of the buildings set along the central axis are surrreal in their appearance. They are meant to impress. the houses along the wings of the airplane shaped city all look out onto parks, while wide boulevards lead into the center. It was a laboritory for modernist achitects and urban planners, and today the city is a Mecca for anyone interested in architecture and in the architect responsible for it Oscar Niemeyer.

When to go

The seasons of Brasilia tend to rather blur into each other somewhat, although what is most noticeable is the overall humidity and frequency of rainfall. Being located in the Southern Hemisphere, the official seasons fall differently for many tourists, with the spring climate arriving in September, summer in December, and winter in June.

The small fishing village of Buzios (pop. 10,000), two hours north of Rio de Janeiro, burst into prominence in the ‘60s, when French actress Brigitte Bardot selected it as one of her favorite vacation spots. Since Ms Bardot’s discovery, however, Buzios has grown a well-deserved international reputation as a playground of the rich and famous. The inviting town offers more than 20 sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, an all-season

climate, lively nightlife, a variety of water sports, and sophisticated boutiques, art galleries and restaurants.

Fortaleza is a major fishing port and fast growing tourist destination in the northeast of Brazil. In the centre there are a few interesting Historic buildings, including the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which was the origin of the city (the name Fortaleza is the Portuguese for Fortress). The Mercado Central and the Cathedral are the major sights in the area. The best beaches are east of town. The Praia de Iracema and the Praia do Futuro are good options; the former is preferred by intellectuals, bohemians and night partiers, whereas the later is preferred by swimmers and surfers. Along the Avenida

Beira Mar there are a few more beaches, such as Meireles and Mucuripe; here, the walkway is wide, with plenty of space for joggers and walkers, who usually refresh themselves at one of the several kioskes and restaurants established along the way. The beaches are also the focal point of nightlife and entertainment.

When to go

Fortaleza has a distinct feature in that it is situated so the ocean current and the wind flow are assets in assisting in the tropical climate temperatures. The rainy season from January until June is made more comfortable by the cool ocean breezes, especially at night. From July until the end of the year the climate and temperature is the best you can ask for on a vacation trip in the tropical regions.

Foz do Iguaçu Iguassu Falls: one of the world’s top ten wonders.

Brasil

Imposing edifices were built using materials imported from Europe; the Amazon Theatre (Opera House) designed by the Italian Domenico de Angelis, the Rio Negro Palace is now the site of the Amazon Government, and the Municipal Market (inaugurated in 1882) is a copy of the extinct Les Halles Market in Paris). MV DESAFIO

The Amazon economy development and theprotection of the forest is one of Brazil’s biggest challenges. The construction of the bridge that will connect Manaus across the River Negro and the forest to the rest of the region, allows access to natural resources without threatening the biggest tropical forest in the world.

This is the spirit of this new adventure: to teach and acknowledge people that devastation and burning the forest to allow agricultural and cattle raising, even though necessary activities for the survival of migration from other regions from Brazil, changes the biodiversity of the forest.

The Desafio Cruises offers the better of two worlds: the convenience and comfort of a pre -arranged group program and the joy of personal discovery. Small enough for everyone to be on a first-name basis by the end of the first hours, passengers feel at home in the heart of the Amazon. This three-mastered vessel has 12 cabins a private facilities and fully air conditioned, restaurant and bar, large sundeck with outdoor bar.
