Africa
Africa is the second largest
continent. This continent is
located in both the northern
and southern hemisphere.

Equator
Located near the equator, Ghana
is hot for the majority of the
year.
Anansi the Spider folktale
originated in Ghana.
Ghana
Ghana’s well known landform is
Lake Volta, the largest
artificial lake in the world.
December marks the start of
summer and the beginning of
the cocoa harvest in Ghana. A
cocoa pod contains 20-30 seeds.
Did you know that 400 seeds
are needed to make a pound of
chocolate?

Antarctica
Antarctica is located around
the South Pole. This icy cold
continent is one of only two
continents located fully in the
southern hemisphere.
The seasons in Antarctica are
opposite of the seasons in the
northern hemisphere.
Summer is October through
February. Winter begins in
March through September.
The sunsets in March and will
rise again in September.
For six months of the year
there’s 24 hours of sunshine
and the other six months
there’s 24 hours of darkness.
Antarctica is the coldest
continent.
Summer in Antarctica is still
the coldest place on Earth at 5
degrees.
The largest desert on Earth,
Antarctica is also known as a
tundra. A tundra has frozen
soil and treeless landscape.
There are only visitors to
Antarctica. These visitors are
researchers that stay on a
military base.
1,000 people stay to research in
the winter and 5,000 people in
the summer.
Adelie Penguins and Elephant
Seals are two animals found in
this bitterly cold place.

Asia
Asia is the largest continent
and located in the northern
hemisphere.
India is the second most
populated country in the world
with nearly 1 billion people.
India’s most famous landform
would be the Himalayan
Mountains. These chains of
mountains are the highest on
Earth and include Mount
Everest in Nepal.
The word Himalayas means home
of snow.
India’s flag has three colors:
orange, green, and white. A
Chakra (wheel) is located in
the middle of the flag.
The animals best known in
India are the Bengal Tiger and
the Asiatic Elephant.
The national bird of India is
the Peacock.
There are over 400 species of
reptiles and snakes in India.
The most famous being the
King Cobra.
You will find venomous scorpions
too!
Asia is known for three
seasonal climates: hot, cool, and
rainy. During the rainy season,
India is known to experience
Monsoons. This is when there
are destructive winds and
rains.

Directions: Put a small amount of water in the pixie
cup and close in the Ziplock bag. Tape the bag to
the window.

Supplies: canning jar, plate, hot water, ice cubes,
index card.
Directions: Pour two inches of hot water in jar.
Cover jar with plate and wait a few minutes. Put
ice on plate.

Australia
Australia is the largest island
on Earth. It’s also known as
‘the land down under’ because
this famous island lies in the
southern hemisphere.
An island is surrounded by
water.
Six states and several
territories divide Australia.
The National Flag is red, white,
and blue. The top left corner
displays the British Flag in
honor of its original settlers.
The large white star has
seven points for the six states
and the addition of new
territories.
The Great Barrier Reef is
located off the coast of
Australia. It’s the largest
reef in the world and took
millions of years to form.
Emus and Kangaroos are
native animals in the outback.

What happens when you mix oil
and water? ___________________

Supplies: funnel, water bottle, water, cooking oil,
blue food coloring, and glitter.
Directions: pour ½ cup of water and oil in the bottle,
tighten lid before shaking. Shake vigorously! Allow
water to sit before observing.

How to make an Ocean in a bottle
Steps Continue…
Directions: Remove the top and add water until
bottle is 2/3 full. Add a few drops of blue food
coloring and some glitter. Place lid on tight and
gently shake bottle to mix color. Add oil to fill the
bottle. Place lid back on and tilt bottle back and
forth for ocean wave effect.
Europe
Europe is located in the
northern hemisphere.
This continent is the second
smallest but made up of the
most countries. Europe has 47
countries in all.
The Vatican City is considered
the smallest coutnry in
Europe. This city is located in
Italy and the home of the
Pope.
Italy is a peninsula. This
landform has water on three
sides.
The European country with the
largest number of volcanoes is
Italy.
Italy’s flag has three colors
green, red, and white.
The thermometer was an
Italian invention.
The piano originated from
Italy.

What happens when you add heat to
water and alcohol? ___________________

Supplies: water bottle, water, rubbing alcohol, plastic
straw, modeling clay, food coloring.
Directions: pour 1/4 of the bottle with equal parts of
water and alcohol. Add a few drops of food coloring. Place
straw in bottle without touching bottom of the bottle. Use
modeling clay to seal the top of the bottle and to help
keep straw from touching the bottom. Place hands around
the bottle and watch the mixture rise up the straw.

America
North America is made up of
three countries: Canada, United

AND Mexico.
There are 50 states in the US.
There are 48 continental
states. The state of Hawaii is
an island. Alaska is located
off the coast of Canada.
Arizona is the location of one
of the United States most
famous landforms, the Grand
Canyon.
The military of the US include:
Air Force
Army
Navy
Coast Guard Marines
The US flag is represented
with 13 stripes for the 13
original colonies, 50 stars for
each state, and the colors are
red, white, and blue.
There are many symbols that
represent The United States.
Rainbow Investigation
How is a rainbow created? _____

Supplies: A clear drinking glass, small mirror,
flashlight, and a dark room with white walls.
Directions: Fill the glass with water. Place the
small mirror in the glass. Tilt the mirror upward. In
a dark room, shine the light on the mirror.

South
America
South America is located in the
southern hemisphere.
The Amazon River begins the
Amazon Basin in Brazil. The
river flows over 4000 miles long.
The river is more than a 1000
miles longer than the US.
There are no bridges that
cross the Amazon River, mostly
because the river is located in
the Rainforest.
The Rainforest has many
tropical animals. The most
famous bird is a Toucan.
There are over 3000 species of
fish in the Amazon. The
piranha is a meat eating fish.
They often eat cattle passing
through the Amazon River.
The world’s largest snakes can
be found in the Rainforest.
The anaconda snake can grow
to be 28 feet long and have
the girth of 44 inches.
