COMPLIANCE: At the next maintenance requiring complete disassembly of the engine, no later than published TBO. MODELS AFFECTED: New and rebuilt IO520B, BA, BB, C, CB, M, and MB; TSIO520B, BB, BE, D, DB, E, EB, J, JB, K, KB, L, LB, N, NB, UB, VB and WB; IO550A, B, C, G, N, P, R and SP; IOF550B, C, N, P and R; TSIO550A, B, C, E, G, K and N; TSIOF550D, J and K; TSIOL550A, B and C engine models manufactured prior to December 2011. I. Background Information In 2011, the design of large crankshaft gear part number 656991 was modified at Revision C requiring the removal of copper plating from the face of the gear after the hardening process. This change was applied as a manufacturing process improvement. This change also affects the superseded part number 632893. II. Scope Replacement of crankshaft gear part numbers 632893 and 656991 (Revision B or earlier), regardless of condition, with crankshaft gear part number 656991 (Revision C or subsequent). III. Action Required Replace all part numbers 632893 and 656991 (Revision B or previous) crankshaft gears with part number 656991 (Revision C) or subsequent part number revision during the next maintenance action requiring crankcase separation. Crankshaft gear replacement must be completed no later than the next engine disassembly or published Time Between Overhaul (TBO) following the original issue date of this bulletin. It is not easy to identify the visual differences between the earlier crankshaft gear part numbers 632893 and 656991 (Revision B or earlier) and their replacement part number 656991 (Revision C). A visual inspection of the gear is required to determine the correct part number and revision level. Part number 656991 (Revision C) gears are in stock and may be ordered through any Continental Motors, Inc.(CMI) distributor.

SERVICE BULLETINCompliance Will Enhance Safety

SUBJECT: Crankshaft Gear Replacement

PURPOSE: To remove PERMOLD engine large crankshaft gear, part numbers 632893 and 656991 (Revision B or earlier) from service.

COMPLIANCE: At the next maintenance requiring complete disassembly of the engine, no later than published TBO.

MODELSAFFECTED: New and rebuilt IO520B, BA, BB, C, CB, M, and MB; TSIO520B, BB, BE,

D, DB, E, EB, J, JB, K, KB, L, LB, N, NB, UB, VB and WB; IO550A, B, C, G, N, P, R and SP; IOF550B, C, N, P and R; TSIO550A, B, C, E, G, K and N; TSIOF550D, J and K; TSIOL550A, B and C engine models manufactured prior to December 2011.

I. Background Information

In 2011, the design of large crankshaft gear part number 656991 was modified at Revision C requiring the removal of copper plating from the face of the gear after the hardening process. This change was applied as a manufacturing process improvement. This change also affects the superseded part number 632893.

II. Scope

Replacement of crankshaft gear part numbers 632893 and 656991 (Revision B or earlier), regardless of condition, with crankshaft gear part number 656991 (Revision C or subsequent).

III. Action Required

Replace all part numbers 632893 and 656991 (Revision B or previous) crankshaft gears with part number 656991 (Revision C) or subsequent part number revision during the next maintenance action requiring crankcase separation.

IV. Inspection

Inspection shall be completed in conjunction with the first maintenance/overhaul instance which requires crankcase disassembly. Inspection may be performed prior to engine disassembly by removing the engine driven fuel pump, if desired.

1. Use a flashlight and inspection mirror to inspect the face (Figure 1) of the crankshaft gear for the part number and revision level.

a. If an inspection clearly identifies the crankshaft gear is part number 656991 (Revision C), perform the inspections required by the engine instructions for continued airworthiness.

b. If the crankshaft gear is found to be either part numbers 632893 or 656991 (Revision B or earlier), or if the crankshaft gear part number cannot be determined by visual inspection, replace the installed crankshaft gear with part number 656991 (Revision C), or the latest revision of the current production crankshaft gear part number, regardless of condition of the crankshaft gear.
