Total Solutions for Processing Natural Gas

The demand for natural gas to meet the world’s growing energy needs has increased in the recent

years due to rising oil prices and environmental concerns. Natural gas is relatively abundant,

and the cleanest-burning fossil fuel, producing significantly lower emissions than coal or oil.

Gas as a primary energy source is on a steady rise, and around one-fifth of global energy needs are

met by natural gas.

Modularisation – Gas Processing Plants

Modular engineering and fabrication of process plants have gained prominence in recent years in view of several advantages like minimum site work, better control on fabrication, compact layout, etc. Modular plant solution can also bring value to projects where the cost of site fabrication could be higher as compared to fabrication in the yard followed by transportation.

Modular engineering and fabrication has its own challenges like working within a compact layout, concurrent engineering of all disciplines, designing for sea/road transportation and optimising the number and the size of modules.

With the ever-increasing demand and cost of hydrocarbons, the energy giants of the world are finding it economical to explore remote areas, which would

have been unthinkable in the past. With limited skilled resources or local industry or extremely high labour rates prevalent in such areas, modular supply of on-shore process plant facilities and assembling at site can be advantageous. This substantially reduces the onsite manpower deployment as compared to what would be required to install a fully-functional on-shore gas processing facility.

The modularisation approach is being followed in different parts of the world, especially large scale oil & gas processing projects and LNG production facilities coming up in coastal regions in Australia, Russia as well as those being installed on small size artificial islands in the UAE. The modules required for such projects are in the form of complete individual processing sections in projects such as gas separation, gas compression, dehydration, and land liquefaction. These modules are required to be fully pre-assembled, tested and pre-commissioned, all within the yards, before being loaded-out and despatched by ocean -going vessels to

the overseas job sites. This complete pre-assembly and further work of modules weighing in the range 1000 MT to 5000 MT and beyond is a challenge by itself. The overall module quantum for a typical project of this nature works out to over 100 modules, with total cumulative weight of over 100,000 MT.

Outlook With growing focus on natural gas as the dominant source of energy in the future, gas processing infrastructure is set to grow in India as well as overseas.

L&T is a major EPC player in India, Middle East and South East Asia. L&T has establishments in UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Malaysia to support business activities in these regions. L&T is also focusing on CIS countries for business development.

With its proven track record of engineering and execution, L&T is fully prepared to take up onshore gas processing projects on LSTK basis – both in domestic and international markets.

ONGC Uran - Additional Process Units Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) decided to augment the capacity of their gas processing complex at Uran keeping in view the availability of additional gas and condensate from its Mumbai High and satellite fields. Thus came about the Additional Process Units (APU) Project.

ONGC awarded the prestigious APU project on a lump sum turnkey basis (LSTK) to L&T Hydrocarbon (Hydrocarbon Mid and Downstream) in August 2010, amid stiff international competition. L&T bagged the contract to implement the project with a challenging schedule of 29 months which includes commissioning too. Triune Engineering Services Pvt. Limited (TESPL) was appointed the project management consultant (PMC) by the customer.

L&T’s scope of work includes project management, planning & monitoring, process engineering, detailed engineering, procurement, fabrication, manufacturing, construction, testing, commissioning, performance guarantee test runs and handing over the new process units, off sites and utilities to ONGC.

The APU project comprises:• Gas Sweetening Unit

(5.0 MMSCMD) • LPG Recovery Unit

(5.65 MMSCMD) • Condensate Handling Unit

(100 TPH) • Condensate Fractionation Unit

(100 TPH) • Utilities such as Nitrogen Generation

unit (200 Nm3/hr), Cooling Water System (7800 m3/hr), Steam Generation System (90 TPH), DM Water Plant (75 m3/hr).

• Construction of 1.4 km offsite pipe racks, various buildings for substation,

Satellite Rack Room, Chemical Lab, Chemical Shed. The APU project will enhance the gas

processing capacity at Uran complex by 5.65 MMSCMD and condensate processing by 100 TPH.

This is one of the first major gas processing projects which L&T is executing as an EPC contractor. Hence the efforts of various L&T capability centres and SBUs are synergised towards the common goal of project completion. The overall project management is being carried out by the Chemical Plants SBU of L&T Hydrocarbon, while the residual and detailed engineering is being done by L&T Engineering, Faridabad. Procurement is being handled by the Supply Chain Management Centre at Mumbai.

L&T Hydrocarbon Construction and Pipelines (HCP) is undertaking the on-site construction activities related to civil, structural and mechanical works, E&I supplies are being managed by the core E&I capability centre of Hydrocarbon Mid and Downstream Business, and the

E&I construction work is being done by L&T Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D).

Process Highlights

The offshore gas from main trunk lines is received at slug catchers at Uran Complex where natural gas and condensate are separated. The condensate-free gas is routed to the gas sweetening units (GSU) and to the LPG recovery units for extraction of value-added products like lean gas, LPG and naphtha. The condensate is routed to the condensate handling unit (CHU) and the condensate fractionation unit (CFU) for removing lighter hydrocarbons and extracting LPG and naphtha. The APU process block diagram explains this clearly.

design which results in lower capital and operating costs as well as reduced solvent degradation.

L&T design engineers together with the Shell team finalised the process and the material of construction data and developed the basic design package for GSU-III.

LPG Recovery Unit (LPG-III): The LPG recovery unit is a complex process plant where the sweet gas from GSU-III is cryogenically processed to extract value-added products such as lean gas, LPG and naphtha. The natural gas is dehydrated in a feed gas dryer using UOP molecular sieves while the chilling requirements for the process are met by a propane refrigeration package and an expander-compressor. The unit is thermally optimised using brazed aluminium heat exchangers housed in a cold box.

This is the first time that L&T has undertaken complete engineering of an LPG plant. During detailed engineering,

emphasis was put on value engineering efforts such as optimisation of the feed gas dryer flow scheme and designing of piping and layout for the feed gas chiller and refrigeration package, keeping the

process and the operation in mind. Interface engineering between vendor packages was one of the key challenges that was efficiently dealt with.

Critical Aspects

Engineering

The engineering task force at L&T Engineering, Faridabad, worked together with the PMC to get a quick approval of the documents. Regular interactions with the ONGC team ensured incorporation of their operational experiences in the plant engineering design.

ONGC, the PMC and the Licensor actively participated during the 3D model review and HAZOP of APU. As the project site was located at the existing complex at Uran, the engineering team had to take special efforts to design and develop the plant and offsite pipe rack layout, taking into consideration various above and underground utilities, hook-up requirements, Oil Industry Safety Directorate’s (OISD) and the operational requirements of ONGC. Complete offsite route was scanned for identifying the underground utilities and cables prior to commencing design work, which significantly helped in designing the foundation locations.

Procurement

The project involved procurement from reputed domestic and global vendors. Some of the critical process packages involved are:• 6.1 MW lean gas compressor by

Hitachi, Japan• 1450 TR refrigeration package by KPCL,

India• Expander-Compressor by GENP, Italy• Feed gas chiller (brazed aluminium

heat exchanger in cold box) by Fives Cryo, France

• Off gas compressor by BPCL, India• 90 TPH medium pressure steam boiler

by Thermax Limited, India• 200 Nm3/hr inert gas plant by Bellelli

Engineering, ItalyThere are several over-dimensional

consignments in the project for which meticulous planning was done by the

logistics team. Some of the columns, as high as 55m, are delivered in two parts with final welding and testing done at the site.

Construction

At the project site, space is a major constraint for construction activities.

Development of site was a huge task prior to taking up the construction activities. Approximately 100,000 cu.m. earth work was involved in the initial grading activities which was completed before commencing civil work.

Many innovative construction methodologies have been used in the project namely pre-casting of major

pipe racks, modularisation of structures and equipment assemblies, which have helped reduce construction time.

Major piping and structural fabrication work is being done outside the site in nearby separate yards. Seamless co-ordination between site, fabrication yards and procurement departments ensured timely availability of matching material and completion of fabrication work.

Special focus is being given on maintaining highest safety standards at site. Considering the strategic location of the plant, special security measures have been introduced for screening men and materials (biometrics, radio frequency identifier, etc.).

Over 100 engineers and more than 1500 workmen have been deployed to complete the work by the scheduled date.

ONGC Hazira: Additional Gas Processing Facilities

ONGC decided to expand its existing onshore gas processing terminal at Hazira, Gujarat under additional gas processing facility phase IV in response to the increased production from the western offshore field in India. The lump sum

turnkey project witnessed participation from national and international EPC bidders in the tendering process. In May 2010, L&T Hydrocarbon (Mid and Downstream) was awarded the contract for this challenging project with a stiff completion schedule of 26 months.

Additional Gas Processing Facilities (AGPF-IV) would boost the capacity of the existing terminal by 6.3 MMSCMD and raise the total production to 49.45 MMSCMD. The scope includes residual

process design, detailed engineering, procurement, transportation, fabrication, construction, installation, testing, commissioning and performance test runs. AGPF-IV comprises the following units:• Gas sweetening unit (6.3 MMSCMD)• Gas dehydration unit (6.3 MMSCMD)• Dew point depression unit

(5.6 MMSCMD) • LPG caustic wash unit (40 m3/hr)• Cooling tower (6000 m3/hr), electrical

substation and associated facilities. The basic engineering design for all the

units was provided by Engineers India Limited (EIL). EIL was also assigned the responsibility for providing the project management consultancy (PMC) services. L&T Engineering, Faridabad is undertaking the detailed engineering for the project while the Hydrocarbon Construction and Pipelines (HCP) Group is carrying out on-site construction activities. Core E&I (Hydrocarbon Mid and Downstream) is managing the supplies and the construction of E&I items.

Sour Natural Gas containing 1375 ppmv H2S and 6 mol % CO2 is sweetened in the gas sweetening unit to obtain sweet gas as a product with 4 ppmv H2S and 4 mol % CO2. The selective removal of H2S with specified CO2 slip is achieved by

treating the sour gas with an aqueous solution of methyldiethanolamine. The gas sweetening unit is designed to accommodate depleting well pressure in the coming years. The sweetened gas is sent to the gas dehydration unit to reduce the moisture content to 85 kg/ MMNCM of gas. Tri Ethylene Glycol based regenerative process is used for the dehydration of gas. The dehydrated gas is sent to a dew point depression unit to chill gas up to 5°C to meet the pipeline specifications. In this unit the gas is cooled using propane as refrigerant.

Project Execution

L&T’s rich experience with a proven track record of having executed major projects in both domestic and international markets has helped the project achieve major milestones.

Extensive survey / mapping of existing gas trains inside the gas complex helped in speeding up the design and engineering work for the project. Critical equipment like multistage pumps, propane

compressor, special heat exchangers, etc. were ordered on reputed vendors well in time for timely deliveries. The safety studies including HAZOP, SIL were completed successfully in a timely manner with active participation from the owner and the PMC.

The project had its share of challenges. Some of these were - multiple large hot tappings; tie-ins and hook-ups with the

existing facility; loose nature of soil at site that posed significant construction challenges including pile foundations for major portion of the plant. Transportation limitations (size and weight) through the existing gas terminal were overcome with temporary entry gates to the site.

The project is in advanced stage of completion and is scheduled for commissioning shortly.

Customer Delight

Soon after we discovered oil in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, we

at Cairn Energy India Limited were on the lookout for a strategic

partner of repute for the development of the Mangala and the

Raageshwari fields and laying the world’s longest continuously

heated and insulated pipeline from Barmer to Salaya.

This work was required to be carried out in an extremely

challenging environment and within a very stringent timeframe.

L&T’s past experience in executing mega jobs of complex nature

helped us in zeroing on them as a prospect for execution of this

prestigious job of national importance.

Having won the job on a competitive bidding basis, the projects

have been successfully completed by L&T overcoming several

challenges. Processing of hydrocarbons from the Mangala fields

of Rajasthan and transportation through the unique pipeline is

now a reality.

We appreciate the active support and intense involvement of

L&T’s top management right from the beginning of the project,

as well as the dedicated efforts put in by our joint teams which

made this distinctive feat possible.

While complimenting L&T on their concerted efforts in making

Cairn’s dream a reality, I look forward to a long-term relationship

between our organisations.

Let’s Meet

Mr. N. Sivaraman’s smile is wide, affable and infectious. And looking at the way the

vibrant organisation of which he is the President is faring, he has every reason to crinkle his face in satisfaction.

Thumbing through the freshly printed pages of the L&T Finance Holding’s maiden Annual Report, he reflects on the numbers that testify to a job well done. It has been a difficult year but L&T Finance Holdings has weathered the storm better than most in the industry.

In an interview to News & Views, Mr. Sivaraman (or to use the universal L&T shorthand – ‘NS’), journeyed through

the year that was, with a brief foray into his stint with the parent company. For those not in the loop, NS was earlier with L&T’s finance department, handling a number of critical assignments with aplomb. The high watermark of a career studded with many accomplishments was when he assisted L&T’s Chairman & Managing Director, Mr. A.M. Naik in the successful cement demerger exercise – one of the largest such exercises in India’s corporate history.

He also won laurels for successfully inducting private equity investors to L&T Infrastructure Development Projects. Anyone who has such a good thing going for him in India’s front-ranking engineering & construction company would have thought twice before plunging into waters of uncertain depth. But as the old poem goes – ships are safe in harbour, but that is not what ships are built for. So, NS set sail.

How did he realign his skills to meet the whole new requirements of the financial services subsidiary of L&T? NS is rigorously analytical in his response. To succeed in any business, he says, you need to do a few things right: you need to understand the inner dynamics. You need to be able to de-construct the activity, so as to be able to clearly identify its value drivers and then, do all you can to push hard on those drivers.

And this is pretty much what he did. Team Finance’s biggest achievement last

year was the successful public listing. Early in 2011 the Company went in for an Initial Public Offering that met with overwhelming response. With this, the financial subsidiary became the first company in the L&T Group to be listed.

It is a business which works entirely on capital, or as NS vividly put it, “where the raw material is money”. So you need to learn how to raise large capital, do it profitably, and do it consistently. The results, when viewed through the lens of the extremely uncertain climate, are commendable. The lending companies of LTFH crossed the Rs 25,000 crore mark in asset base in 2012. The combined asset base of the entire group has seen a Compounded Average Growth Rate of 41%.

The Company has also demonstrated a healthy appetite for inorganic growth. The new entities under the LTFH umbrella are doing well. L&T Mutual Funds – an acquisition of a part of DBS Cholamandalam has consistently grown in terms of Assets Under Management. LTFH now ranks among the top 15 of the country’s asset management companies.

While the performance of the fledgling company has been commended by knowledgeable observers, there has also been the occasional carping comment. (Let’s face it, which endeavor does not have its critics?) NS’s response is measured and credible. He says that the organisation’s score card must be viewed

Challenge & Fulfillment Come In Equal Measure at L&T Finance Holdings

Mr. N. Sivaraman, President & Whole-time Director, L&T Finance Holdings.

L&T executives company-wide maintain such hectic schedules and are so reticent that they have

little time and less inclination to feature in the house magazine. This is even more true with our

Group Companies. That is why, for instance, our stories on L&T Finance Holdings are so few and

far between. But with some gentle coaxing, we managed to persuade Mr. N. Sivaraman to spend

just an hour with our Roving Reporter.

Let’s Meet

in the context of the underperformance of large segments of the industry last year. Even our listing, he says, took place in a difficult period. Only L&T could have made it the success it did.

There is of course more to success than money. “The finance business,” says NS, “is as much about people as it is about money”. It was here that NS had to probably undergo a more significant shift compared to what he was doing earlier.

NS confesses that he is not of the flamboyant mould that makes natural born leaders. He is a private person (this correspondent can vouch for it – at L&T House, NS largely kept to himself). But in his avatar at Metropolitan, the reticent, slightly withdrawn attitude could well be mistaken for indifference. As every management guru says, leaders have to

be able to communicate. By conscious thought and deliberate action then, NS schooled himself in the ‘people skills’ that now help him to lead a team that is over 2000, and growing. The HR scene at LTFH is a demographic rainbow, with people varying in age, skills sets and backgrounds. It has been NS’ job to leverage the diversity and weave different strands into a high performance unit. He learnt the ropes quickly. NS identified the Key Performance Indicators at two levels – organizational and functional. Once clear goals were set, he felt that it was important to ensure as much proximity as possible between a person’s inputs and the rewards he receives. You do not need to do something exotic or outlandish, NS asserts, to win trust. People will trust you if you are direct, transparent and fair.

When asked to encapsulate his own feelings about what he had achieved at LTFH, NS summed it up in one word – “fulfilling”. Looking ahead, the future promises to be even more of the same. Agreements are already in place to acquire Fidelity India’s mutual funds business. The Company is embarking into the housing finance business by taking over Indo Pacific Housing Finance Company. Of course, the biggest and most coveted prize of them all glitters somewhere down the road – the prospect of a bank licence. Watch this space readers, as NS along with long-term mentor, Chairman & Managing Director, Mr. Y.M. Deosthalee script new chapters in the continuing growth story of L&T Finance Holdings.

-- Roving Reporter

The following excerpt from the address of Mr. Y.M. Deosthalee, Chairman & Managing Director of

L&T Finance Holdings, to shareholders places the Company’s performance in context:

“L&T Finance Holdings witnessed robust growth in the last year. The aggregate assets of our NBFCs grew by 39% and PAT grew by 16%. The lower growth in PAT was mainly due to the one-time provisioning of Rs. 75 crores for potential losses in the state of Andhra Pradesh in respect of the microfinance business. The Net Interest Margins, especially in L&T Finance were adversely affected by a continuous rise in interest rates.

Notwithstanding these challenges, your company has demonstrated profitable growth by focussing on asset quality and control over expenses.

In the last quarter of FY 2012, the company took a number of strategic steps towards maintaining the growth momentum and creating sustainable value for stakeholders.”

In its capacity-expansion drive, the Electrical & Automation Business of L&T inaugurated its world-class

manufacturing facility for switchgear products on the 17.7-acre land adjacent to L&T Knowledge City at Vadodara, on July 12, 2012. E&A will manufacture Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs) and Moulded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) at this facility.

In an area of close to 27,000 sq metres under a single roof, the facility houses modules for the assembly lines for circuit breakers - ACBs and MCCBs - along with shops for press working, moulding and tooling. A well-equipped centre for

providing research, development and engineering for circuit breakers will also be located here.

The construction of the factory along with an administrative block was completed in 26 months on July 5, 2012 from the day of ground breaking in April 2010. Commercial production started in October 2011.

The facility consists of seven modules – from A to G. The manufacturing area of MCCBs and ACBs is 6000 sq metres each, C&F area excluding silver plating is 4500 sq. metres, tooling solutions area is 3000 sq metres and utilities including canteen and gym have been

built in 3000 sq metres. The three-floor administrative block that will also house the circuit breaker design and development facility has 6500 sq metres of space. While the manufacturing facility qualifies for ‘Green Factory’ certification in line with the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) norms, the administrative block has received the LEED Silver certification. The facility has ISO 9001 certification. All the material used in the construction have been green certified and eco-friendly.

Mr. A.M. Naik, L&T’s Chairman & Managing Director, visited the facility on the eve of its formal opening and took

Mr. R. N. Mukhija unveils a plaque to inaugurate L&T’s new E&A facility at Vadodara, in the presence of Mr. A.M. Naik, Mr. S. C. Bhargava, Mr. P.K. Bajaj, and other dignitaries.

Vadodara is a much loved city known for its art, heritage – and increasingly now for industry.

L&T of course is no stranger to this vibrant and charming place. Our Hydrocarbon business, for

instance, set roots there decades ago. Knowledge City underlined our footprint in Vadodara

with a state of the art campus. Now, we open yet another page in the continuing story with

the Electrical & Automation facility.

a quick round of manufacturing shops and other facilities of the complex. He also had a brief informal interaction with the employees. Mr. Naik expressed happiness at the employee mix as many young engineers had joined the Vadodara facility from different states and asked them to make it a highly productive and happening manufacturing unit.

The factory was formally inaugurated by the Advisor to Chairman, Mr. R.N. Mukhija along with Mr. S.C. Bhargava, Sr. Vice President & Head of E&A, in the presence of Mr. Naik, Mr. K. Venkataramanan, CEO & MD, and L&T Board Members, Mr. R. Shankar Raman, Mr. S.N. Roy, Mr. S. Rajgopal; and Mr. P. K. Bajaj, Vice President-ESP, Mr. K.K. Shukla, General Manager & Head of Manufacturing-ESP, ESP channel partners and scores of L&T employees.

The inauguration ceremony, as run-up to the L&T Platinum Jubilee celebrations, included ribbon-cutting, plaque unveiling, traditional lamp lighting and speeches. A media briefing by Mr. Naik and Mr. Bhargava also took place on the occasion. The opening event, held at the new auditorium and facilitated by Mr. Shukla, started with lighting of the lamp by the L&T leadership team and select channel partners and screening of L&T Anthem.

In his welcome address, Mr. Bajaj called it a great occasion for E&A that was marked by the presence of a large number of Board Members, second to the AGM. “This presence shows the top management’s commitment and support to the business,” he said and presented a video on the construction milestones of the facility. He added that having relocated manufacturing of MCCBs from Powai, the process of shifting U Power ACB manufacturing will start in the next few months. “The associated network of suppliers is getting developed to support this manufacturing activity, quality labs which are required to be an integral part

of a manufacturing activity to support both ACBs and MCCBs have been set up and a tool maintenance department and component moulding shop is already in operation. We would soon have a design & development centre, a full-fledged tool room as a part of this facility and new ranges of both ACBs and MCCBs would get added to this facility,” Mr. Bajaj concluded.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Mukhija said that Mr. Bhargava and his team deserved credit for creating a world class manufacturing facility. “The Vadodara facility – the latest jewel in our crown – will be the 11th member of our manufacturing locations, not adding locations of recent acquisitions,” he said. Making a statement on current productivity levels, he said that the Vadodara facility was already manufacturing over 35,000 MCCBs that will soon increase to 50,000 units per month. “As of today, we have more demand than what we are manufacturing even though we are producing much more MCCBs than what we did at Powai when we moved here,” he added. Mr. Mukhija also spoke

about L&T Switchgear’s leadership role in imparting and spreading good electrical practices and said that two new Switchgear Training Centres at Delhi and Bhubaneshwar will be added to complement those at Pune, Lucknow and Coonoor.

“As market leaders, we have innovated new technologies and products that became industry standards. Our Switchgear Design & Development Centres based out of Powai & Coimbatore have been pioneers in L&T for creating intellectual capital for the company. They have filed 700 patents and 80 design registrations in the past 6 years and, I am sure, the R&D centre at Vadodara will contribute significantly to amassing intellectual capital in L&T. In operation excellence, our initiatives to improve manufacturing processes like 6 sigma, Value Engineering and 5S have worked as catalysts. We believe that to excel we have to become faster and more responsive to our customers. We owe our success to the suppliers for their consistency and quality of supplies, our stockists because of their loyalty and trust in our products. They are special

because they enjoy double relation and double benefits as being one of us and also valuable customers,” he concluded.

In his speech on the occasion, Mr. Venkataramanan spoke about “a fascinating journey which we started in Vadodara in 1991-92 assisting Mr. Naik in realising the vision of coming to Vadodara as part of the golden triangle - Powai for the brawn and part of the brain, Hazira fully for the brawn (taakat - Manufacturing) and Vadodara for the brain.” Switchgear, for him, was definitely a jewel in L&T’s crown when it came to original development of product technologies.

Remembering that this extended joint family type of relationship is unique, he complimented Mr. Mukhija and his predecessors and successors who will maintain this unique streak that L&T has. “Not only do we convert employees into L&T-ites, but we also jointly build a bond between us and our stockists as L&T-ites. We are blessed that the stockists have remained with us and that bond is the strongest in the industry. Among various switchgear factories, the impact VSW has made on me was similar to the switchgear factory when it came up in Powai East,” he concluded.

Addressing the audience, Mr. Naik said, “The fact is we needed to do

something very aggressive. We needed to cut costs, be competitive, come up with new products, upgrade our product development and R&D facilities, bridge the gap of product basket. So, we made a 5-point plan: Bridge product gaps to stay ahead and surpass competition, enlarge product umbrella with accessories of electrical products and with more and more acquisitions, Cost optimization – convinced people in Mumbai that we have to move out if switchgear is to survive, accelerate bringing products to the market, internationalise and finally, bring the spirit of L&T switchgear, electrical and stockists to a high point that had always existed.”

Mr. Naik added, “We have a new strategic plan that was launched four months ago in which switchgear will be the leading light in L&T’s product business. L&T is largely a project company. Switchgear has almost 40% project business. The advantages of L&T switchgear is its design, development, tools, application and new state-of-the-art products which go into various L&T projects and outside. All over the world, project business margins are very small and risks highest. We need to keep product manufacturing with L&T Group companies so that to an extent the risk is neutralised.”

“When economy bounces back, the electrical industry will do well and

E&A - a jewel in the crown of L&T will shine and Vadodara will play a great role in this. The whole of the L&T Board will make sure that this business will become a grand success. Let us make sure all our dreams will come true,” exhorted Mr. Naik.

In order to boost productivity and enhance quality in manufacturing, the Vadodara facility has implemented automated/semi-automated assembly line, packing and mechanized test and inspection set ups for effective detection of non-conformance. There are a number of HMI-based stations for capturing defects at any stage and ensuring immediate re-work or correction. All assembly operations have been designed as a flow line. Implementation of Lean Manufacturing principles ensure orderly, optimised productivity and higher efficiency.

The facility features a smart mix of labour and automation that would enhance productivity 2.5 times. All critical-to-quality steps have error-free assembly. The lines are equipped to produce circuit breakers of different frames, and ratings from 16A to 6300A. Significant automation has been deployed in the selection of right material for assembly in order to ensure production of first time right products.

Environment management measures include rain water harvesting and zero discharge of any waste. About 43% of the total land is green area on which more than 1500 saplings have been planted since the beginning of construction. The facility makes optimum utilisation of natural resources of energy with the sunlight being effectively used to avoid any electric lighting on the shop floor during the day.

The facility, created at an investment of Rs. 130 crore, would have 800 employees over the next 3-4 years and achieve a turnover of Rs. 600 crore.

L&T Releases Policy on Protection of Women’s Rights at Workplace

On 6th July, 2012, L&T released its policy for ‘Protection of Women’s Rights at the Workplace’. The

policy carried a covering message from Mr. K. Venkataramanan, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director. The message emphasized L&T’s commitment to fostering an environment of mutual respect and dignity for all its employees. It reiterated that L&T believes that every woman employee is entitled to a work environment that is free from any conduct which can be considered as sexual harassment. It would therefore strive to protect all women employees from sexual harassment and take appropriate action wherever required.

The policy on ‘Protection of Women’s

Rights at the Workplace’ is based on laws of India and is therefore applicable to all employees of L&T located in India irrespective of their level, rank or designation, across all departments, functions and operations.

This policy defines sexual harassment and its applicability. It lays down the structure of Committees, at the Apex, Regional and Local levels for dealing with complaints from women employees. It also lays down the process to be followed while redressing grievance and functioning of the Committees. As the largest EPC player in solar power, L&T Construction executed the solar power plant from concept (including detailed design) to commissioning in 129 days. With the commissioning of this plant, L&T Construction has installed 114 MW of utility scale solar PV power plants over the last fiscal – a benchmark in India’s solar EPC industry.

The solar PV power plant, equipped to supply more than 70 million units of clean and green energy to 75,000 households, was commissioned in the presence of Mr. Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Mr. Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr. Jitendra Singh, Energy Minister, Mr. Anil Dhirubhai Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Power and senior officials from L&T. The clean energy generated by the plant is expected to displace nearly 70,000 MT of CO2 annually.

The solar PV power plant, which comprises more than 5,00,000 high output generating thin film technology based Solar PV modules and thirteen 3.5 MVA power transformers to generate 40 MWp, is spread across 350 acres. The thin film Solar PV modules for the project were procured by Reliance; while L&T’s scope of work included complete design, engineering, procurement and construction of 40 MWp solar power plant, including construction of a 5 km, 33 kV double circuit transmission line.

L&T’s EPC expertise led to benchmarks in scale and pace of execution. It undertook installation of 13000 modules per day and laid more than 1400 km of cables. Adopting mechanised construction including sophisticated ramming machines, L&T’s engineers and workforce achieved 7,37,409 safe man hours during the execution of the project.
