Leaving a Lasting Legacy What do you want to be remembered for? When you look back over your life, what would you want the highlights to be? Where do you want to make a difference or leave your imprint upon this world? It is clear in scripture that we are meant to make a difference in this world for Christ. As I shared this past Sunday, I like the way Francis Chan says it, in his book Crazy Love, “The point of your life is to point to Him.” Leaving a lasting legacy spiritually through his disciples was of clear importance for Jesus. In order for his mission to be carried out or continued he knew that he had to imprint it upon the lives of a few close followers. So, on the night before his

death, while meeting with his disciples in the Upper Room, Jesus said, “My prayer is not for them (The disciples) alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me” (John 17:20-23). Similarly, Paul expressed this passion. In 1 Corinthians 15:3-5, he said, “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve.” Clearly, Paul knew the importance of passing on the basic truths of the Christian faith to the next generation. So, in his letter to a young pastor Timothy, he would say, “You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:1-2). Paul was passing on a legacy of faith to Timothy that he was then to pass on to others.

Along these lines, it has been said that the Christian faith is only one generation away from extinction. In other words, if we are not faithful to pass on our faith, the next generation will not know Jesus. Now there is more to it than that. Scripture is clear that God will always keep a remnant of belief and faith until Christ returns. But, it also clear that we are meant to play our part. Leaving a legacy of faith through discipling (Teaching or Sharing with) others, or passing on the truths of the Christian faith is central to why we are here. Our legacy extends beyond that though to include our marriages, parenting, and grandparenting, giving and blessing. There are many aspects of our legacy that scripture would call us to consider. That is why we are focusing our Fall Sermon Series on Leaving a Lasting Legacy. Other opportunities, including The Marriage Course, which begins on Friday, September 16th and the Legacy Journey Class, which begins on Wednesday, September 14th, are meant to encourage you to leave lasting, health legacy through your marriage and through your finances. Men’s and Women’s Retreats can also be a place where you grow spiritually in order that you might leave a lasting legacy for others. More information on these and other opportunities are included in the passages of the Sierra Story that follow. Know that Leaving a Lasting Legacy is a reflection not only of the big decisions we make in the life but of the little decisions we make every day that reflect the overall direction or course of our lives. As Mark Batterson said in his book All In, “You are one decision away from a different kind of life.” The question is, what will that decision be? In Christ, Pastor Mike

Even though I grew up in a church-going , Christian, farm family, I often find myself needing to rejuvenate or renew my spirituality. About sixteen years ago, while attending a Women of Faith Conference in San Jose, I received a Women of Faith Devotional New Testament Bible. Sometime ago, within the devotional area, I discovered an article: Suggestions For Spiritual Growth, which I refer to often. The scriptures have greatly helped me and I would like to share them with you. G– Go to God in prayer daily (John 15:7) R– Read God’s word daily (Acts 17:11) O– Obey God moment by moment (John 14:12) W– Witness for Christ by your life and words (Matthew 4:19 & John 15:8) T– Trust God for every detail of your life (I Peter 5:7) H– Holy Spirit, Allow Him to control and empower your daily life and witness (Galatians 5:16-17) I challenge you to search and read the above scriptures most of which are the words of Jesus. The above scriptures help us to realize the only way to live a truly good life is to stay close to Jesus, searching the scriptures for themselves, live each day controlled and guided by the Holy Spirit and when we turn to God in repentance He will bear the weight of our struggles. Reading and studying the above scriptures does remind and empower me, as a Deacon, spiritually. Blessings to each and everyone in the reading of the scriptures shown above.

Back-to-School! I’ll confess, it has been so long since I was in school I really don’t remember much about those times. What I do remember is that when in school we were always talking about the future: what classes to take next, what course of study to choose, what college to attend, what job/career I was best suited for, etc. In the midst of all that it can be difficult to just be aware of and relish the present moment. God does not want us to miss out on any opportunity he has planned for us in the present by over-focusing on the future. That said, ultimately all of us need

to make the choice whether or not to follow Jesus which leads us into spending eternity with him in heaven.

In Ankor, it is our deepest desire to introduce and encourage teens to enter into a relationship with Jesus. We have SO much fun together doing this and this coming school year will be no exception! Our year will include outreach events, times of going deeper with Jesus, retreats, service projects and lots of crazy games and laughter. If you are a teen or you know of one who needs a place where they will be known by name and loved deeply, please encourage them to join us!

We have returned to our school-year schedule for Wednesday’s which is we meet in Hatcher Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This time includes games, worship, great dinners and a time of teaching from God’s word. On Sunday’s we start out joining in the time of worship with the whole church for second service and at the time for greetings we move out to Hatcher and study the sermon topic for that morning ‘till 11:30 a.m.

The men of Sierra and Covenant Presbyterian Churches are invited to attend the 2016 Men’s Retreat at Grizzly Creek Ranch in Portola, CA. This year we will be focusing on how we share our faith in our local communities and around the world. We are excited to introduce this year’s speaker, Troy Wilson, Pastor of The Table SF, a startup church in San Francisco and member of the EPC Presbytery of the Pacific. The cost is $180, some additional fees for registering online and/or free time activities.

To register pick up a brochure at the Connection Center in the lobby of Sierra Presbyterian Church to fill out the registration form. Mail or drop off form and check at Sierra Presbyterian Church or register online at www.sierrapres.com

Ladies , don’t miss out on signing up for our upcoming retreat, at beautiful Camp Del Oro. Beautiful accommodations in cute little cottages; all you bring is what you are going to wear and your Bible. Great food and lots of fun activities are planned for you. Space is limited so be sure and stop by the Connection Counter and pick up a brochure and get registered. We will even have 3 massage therapists on Saturday morning, who will be giving ½ hour to 1 hour massages on a "first-come-first served basis" (a fee will be charged; appointments will be taken in late August. ) Dr. Melisa Agness will be our speaker on Saturday; Beth Griffin will be our speaker on Sunday morning, and I will be sharing on Friday evening. So if you need your “cup filled”, are looking for some great fellowship, and want to laugh until tears are coming down your cheeks. Be sure to find some ways to cope with those really hard days that just don’t make sense, and you find your heart hurting and need some direction and affirmation. Come prepared to listen to what God does in the midst of those times of: When Life Gives You Lemons. See you there!

“Just the scheduling of seven nights together was a wonderful treat!” “The Marriage Course helped us realize the importance of making time for each other on a regular basis.” “The Marriage Course gave us tools to work on our problems in a constructive way.” “Of all the different marriage conferences we’ve attended, this course has definitely been the most helpful personal resource yet!”

WHAT IS THE MARRIAGE COURSE?

The Marriage Course is very practical, providing couples with

the tools necessary to build strong and healthy relationships

that last a lifetime. Each Friday evening couples will enjoy a

“date night”, sharing a delicious dinner at a table for two,

watching video talks by Nicky and Sila Lee (Alpha course

colleagues at Holy Trinity Brompton, London), and

conversing privately after each talk using a response guide.

Couples talk in a welcoming, relaxed, and non-threatening

setting. While the material is based on Christian principles, it

is appropriate for any couple—with or without a church

background. Literally thousands of couples have attended

the course since the early 90’s.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The Marriage Course is for any couple who wants to build a strong and lasting relationship:

Those who want to enhance their marriage

Those at a challenging stage in their marriage

(e.g., the birth of a child, a career change, the "empty nest", etc.)

Those in the first five years of marriage

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

After sharing a candlelit dinner at tables for two and

watching a video talk, couples talk about important

topics such as:

recognizing each other’s needs

learning to communicate effectively

resolving conflict healing and past hurt

knowing how to make each other feel loved

relating to parents and in-laws

good sex

making time for each other

having fun together

Privacy as a couple is always respected. There is no

group discussion and no requirement to disclose

anything about your relationship to anyone else.

WHEN & WHERE? The Marriage Course meets seven

Fridays in the Fellowship Hall at Sierra

Presbyterian Church (175 Ridge Road,

Nevada City) from 6:00pm—8:30pm.

Every other Friday:

September 16 & 30, October 7 & 21,

November 4 & 18 and December 2.

COST

The cost is $100.00 per couple for fine

dinners and a course booklet. Child-

care is available for a small donation

and by reservation.

Mission News Christian Nationals take over two institutions in Uganda The Kellerman Hospital was founded over 10 years ago by Dr. Scott Kellerman. The Bwindi Ugandans now staff the hospital with their own doctors, nurses, orderlies, and support personnel. They also send health teams to remote villages. Calvary Chapel Church School/Potters Field Ministry Located in Entebbe, was developed by Craig and Loren Lindquist over 10 years ago. This school stresses literacy and health education. The nationals now provide activities and meals one day per week for about 500 children from a nearby refugee camp. The school also provides standard as well as vocational subjects to the locals from kindergarten thru college level. The nationals are also prepared to pastor churches in their own far flung villages. John Kudamuch (whom our church supports) has three churches in a very dangerous area in South Sudan. Pastors Peter, Julius, and Robin (cousins) and Bartholomew have their own struggling churches. However, there is a well-established church on the island farm pastured by Deus and his wife Audra in an area where witchcraft threatens. Some of these Christians are health professionals, bankers, and teachers and are involved in their communities as they continue to learn of a life changing, and loving God. Thank GOD for bringing people out of darkness and into His beautiful light. I Peter 2:4,5,9,10.

STEPHEN MINISTRY Christ Caring for People through People

Here’s what one Stephen Minister has to say about Stephen Ministry: What I have found so interesting over the past 20 years of being a Stephen Minister is that I gain more, I think, out of the relationship than does the care

receiver. I truly hope that this isn’t the case, but sitting and listening to the care receiver talk and applying lessons learned to that talk has helped me grow as a person and as a helper. Truly, learning to be quiet and listen has been one of the biggest gains in my make-up. We are not in the relationship to tell our story – we are there to listen and to hear.

There are always three of us in the meeting: the care receiver, The Stephen Minister and God. We all hear what is said and it is always amazing how things turn out when we let God hear what we have inside. Being a Stephen Minister is a commitment, but it is also a huge blessing and the personal gain is sure a big PLUS. As Uncle Sam said during World War II, “I Want YOU!” Sierra Pres needs men (and women) who are willing to listen and hear and care. Submitted by Bill Blount

OUR KITCHEN NEEDS A LITTLE TLC!

It is going to be a while before we have our new kitchen, so in the meantime we need to keep what we have in good order. We used to have 6 volunteers who would come and clean a small portion of the kitchen about every 2 months. Now we only have one faithful saint who cleans all the drawers. So how about you? Would you like to serve the Lord in this way by taking on a small part of the kitchen to clean every two months, or as necessary? It won’t take long, the timing is up to you, and your service will be much appreciated. For questions, ask Meryl Wilson, 477-5342 or

MARMALADE!

I know many of you like to have my marmalade, and many of you have helped by returning the jars, or finding other that I can use. That is so very helpful! I will be selling the marmalade again, so please continue to donate the jars! I use the 6 oz. ones, but if you only have 7 oz. or 8 oz. jars, I can use a few of those also. You can leave them with Ellen in the church office. Thank you. Meryl Wilson 530-477-5342
