environment.” “What made the Purim play so endearing,” he writes, “and beloved, was not its literary quality, but the opportunity it provided, through naïve dialogue, simple, even primitive, song often of borrowed melody, and crude but frank action, to give vent to suppressed feelings and hopes heightened by current suffering. Here was a realm of freedom where the Jew could be assured of ultimate triumph over his enemies.”

I don’t know how depressing or tedious most of you find your environment, but if you do, come on down to Beth Am the evening of March 23rd. There, you’ll shake your grogger, hear the Megillah chanted by several of your fellow congregants, and perhaps sample some tasty hamantashen (and a little schnapps). Oh, and if life isn’t tedious or depressing, come anyway. It’ll still be funny.

I have previously commented that my favorite moment in the Torah is immediately following the crossing of the Sea of Reeds, when the water stops churning, the dancing and singing end, the wind is calm, and the Israelites look eastward to an empty desert … when all has become silent. This moment is not described in the Torah. It simply says the Israelites start walking ahead. Surely there must have been some realization by the people that they were free and the horizon was simply out there, before the first step was taken, but that moment of realization was lost somewhere between sentences in the text.

I recently attended a string trio concert, including a piece comprised of a number of short variations, where one does not applaud until the last. Thus, there is a break between variations. As each variation ended, the musicians held their bows and facial expressions in suspension, waited, and then very slowly relaxed to set up for the next section. The silence between variations was powerful, allowing the mood of the just-completed variation to release gradually, and giving the listener some space

before the next began.I was not listening to my breathing or feeling my body relax, as might be the case in meditation for the purpose of relaxation. Nor was this a sense of tension release. Rather, it was a time to prolong an emotional and intellectual engagement, to appreciate how it affected me and savor the impact. And it was a powerful stimulus to which I was reacting, in this case the music, which the silent period imposed by the musicians gave me time to consider.

The same might be said about praying at services. We may break into a song, or dance with the Torah, or clap in a spirited manner, or read a prayer aloud together. But who among us fully experiences the silence? Prayer provides a text or themes for us to consider, but if we do not create the silence in which we can consider the impact of the message, then we have missed our opportunity to better understand the moment.

I am not only talking about the absence of noise. That is the first component of silence. But we often quietly read some text to

CANTOR’S CORNERGiving Meaning to SilenceCantor Ira Greenstein

ourselves, thinking about it as the words are scanned by our eyes or recited from memory … and this, to me, is NOT a meaningful silence, but rather the absence of speech. To fully experience silence in prayer, it seems to me best for the mind not to be occupied in a fixed manner, to be free-flowing.

This is all in marked contrast to the holiday this month, Purim, where one feature is making noise. Thus, this month, we can experience both “extremes” of Judaism – delirium and silence – collectively, within the setting of our Beth Am community.

Silence is not impeded by language barriers or the ability to carry a tune, but it often derives its meaning as a reflex to the words and sounds that immediately preceded the silence. Or perhaps it takes its meaning from something that is bouncing

around in our head at that moment, some problem or some joy that is relived in the silence. The next time you recite an Amidah, and the room offers silence, I suggest you take part of that silence to allow the recited text or theme to sink in, to prolong its impact. For example, as you conclude your Amidah with Sim shalom (a prayer for world peace and serenity) or with Yih’yu l’ratzon (asking that our prayer be acceptable to God), see a peaceful world in your mind’s eye … or as you back away from the Sovereign’s throne, allow God’s image or presence to fade slowly. Alternatively, as I quietly hum a niggun (melody without words), try to absorb the impact of the prayer space we have just shared together in the music.

Savor the silence, use it meaningfully, and hopefully add a new dimension to your prayer.

CONGREGATIONAL LEARNINGRabbi Kelley Gludt

One of the best things about being a part of the larger Baltimore Jewish community is the chance to learn both with and from my colleagues and fellow educators. Last month, I had the blessing of engaging in two such professional development opportunities.

The International Jewish Resource Center for Inclusion in Special Education hosted a day at the JCC for educators called Turning Mirrors into Windows. The workshop focused on ways to build learning strategies for diverse learners. The keynote speaker, Dr. Rick Lavoie, helped everyone in attendance make a paradigm shift in how we think about children with learning disabilities. His mensch-y approach to these students was both awe inspiring and helpful. The main message of the yom iyun centered on the statistic that we engage in social interactions for 97 percent of our lives, and the necessity for educators to keep that in mind when dealing with both children and adults who struggle in this area. Dr. Lavoie pointed out that if a child cannot read, we can make a digital recording; if a child cannot write,

technology offers us speech-to-text options; if a child cannot spell, we pull up spell-check. But if a child is unable to make friends, then he or she has a seriously diminished capacity for both happiness and success in life. The day of learning focused on the need for both roots and wings, and strategies to help our children succeed in the area that matters most—relationship building.

Next, I spent a day with my fellow professionals from the Reform movement exploring the mental health challenges facing our youth and teens. While this audience was vastly different, and the speakers no less so, the message was right on point: the vital importance of social and emotional competence. The workshop focused on five core capacities for healthy teens and youth, including self awareness, the ability to regulate emotions, social awareness, good relationship skills, and responsible decision making. We also explored the vital importance of moving our youth from stress to resilience. Resilience, we learned, resembles a muscle; it needs to be developed by absorbing a blow and recovering. Dr. Anne Townsend

9

of the Mariposa Child Success Program taught us ways to foster self-awareness and stressed the most important takeaway from the day: empathy reduces stress which therefore increases the ability to learn.

We have spent a lot of time at Beth Am creating a warm and safe environment for our children and teens to come and learn and share, and we work hard to foster an environment that strengthens their social and emotional skills. I am so proud to be a part of Beth Am, where the congregants, staff and Lab faculty all so naturally and organically practice empathy. And I now empirically know what I have long felt in my kishkes: strong and healthy relationships are the key to successful learning.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVEHow do you say mensch in Spanish? Julie Gottlieb

In mid-January, Steve and I spent ten days in San Juan, Puerto Rico. What we had planned as a break in the Caribbean sun turned into a misadventure when, on the first evening of our vacation, our dear friend and traveling companion was hit by a taxi and seriously injured. Once we learned that, with the right care, she would make a full recovery, we were able to put aside our initial terror and focus on supporting our friend and her husband, and we soon came to appreciate the many blessings buried in that awful experience. It was the small things people did that got us all through our friend’s eight days as a patient in the public hospital that serves major trauma cases in the Caribbean. There was Eduardo, the young nurse fresh from several years on the battlefield in Afghanistan who updated us frequently and with great warmth, and reassured us as the surgeons worked to stabilize our friend. There was Kristen, the night nurse who went out after her shift ended at 3 a.m. and bought our friend milk – which wasn’t available in the hospital. Carmen,

the social worker, made extra visits to ensure that the nursing staff got our friend out of bed as soon as she could walk a few feet. Yamila, the administrator for the Puerto Rican traffic insurance program, took our calls at all hours and made us feel like part of her family. And there was the patient in the next bed who, on seeing that my friend’s nightgown was wet and dirty, offered her one of her own – actually a lacy negligee -- and said, in Spanglish, “it’s yours to keep.”

At one time or another, we all experience tragedy, loss, and other unexpected hardships. Most people also face less dramatic day-to-day challenges. We expect, need, and get by with support from friends and family. But menschlichkeit gestures, especially from people not in our inner circle and from complete strangers, also can have a profound impact on our well-being. They make us feel connected, and expand our sense of belonging to a larger community, whether that is the larger Beth Am community, the Reservoir Hill community, or some place we just happen to be visiting.

“ When John and I contemplated ‘estate planning,’ of course we wanted to provide for our children and grandchildren. But Beth Am also was like family, and a legacy gift was a painless way to provide for it as well. All we had to do was designate the portion of our estate to go to Beth Am when we die. We won’t be around to miss the money, and future generations can benefit.”

While there are many ways to give to Beth Am, we hope you will consider supporting the Synagogue’s missions by making a bequest to Beth Am in your will or living trust.

Making a bequest allows you to combine your financial planning with philanthropy to make a lasting investment in the future of our congregation.

Chevruta StudyMarch 26 and April 16

The traditional (yeshivish) way of studying Jewish texts is with a chevruta – the buddy system. On each of the two Shabbatot, March 26 and April 16, after services, we will focus on relevant, provocative topics and study them by pairing up with a fellow congregant. The text sources we will make available will be both contemporary and traditional, Jewish and non-Jewish. After chevruta study, we will meet again as a large group to share what we’ve been learning. One-on-one chevruta learning is fun and informal, while facilitating thoughtful analysis and discussion.
