Pablos Art Studios Inc

Pablos Art Studios Inc. was established in 1993 as a creative response to the increase of care in the community for people with lived experience of mental illness. We provide a support-ive and professional art studio and gallery environment for people, who have experienced mental illness, to engage in the production of artwork. Pablos enables people to develop a broad skill base and to take ownership of their creative paths towards positive outcomes in the local and wider communities.

Pablos Art Studio operates from Monday to Friday 10am-5pm. Individuals access, at no cost, creative opportunities such as art workshops, individual tuition, discussion and critique groups and exhibition opportunities. They work at their own desk or at a communal table. The expectation is for artists to attend on certain days and to work constructively while they attend. Pablos is not a drop in centre.

Artists at Pablos are supported to work independently towards their own creative goal plans, and balance their independent work by participating in organised workshops. They have positive role models and gain inspiration by working alongside others.

For Pablos 2018 has been a year in which there have been some significant achievements whilst at the same time a growing awareness of challenges that the organization is already facing and is likely to face in the coming year.

Dee Dahlberg and the rest of the staff team at Pablos have worked incredibly hard at maintaining current funding sources whilst also vigorously seeking new ones, often very successfully. I would also like to acknowledge how Dee, the rest of her team and the Pablos artists have continued to use available resources in a very efficient way whilst still ensuring that Pablos continues to produce a range of spectacular work. Even with this success, a significant question for the committee has been how can Pablos access sustainable funding. One of the potential challenges for us as an organization is the prospect that our current main funder, the Ministry of Social Development, may come to make changes to the way it funds services such as ours. Obviously this could have a significant effect on the future of Pablos. Another potential challenge could emerge from Pablos studio and gallery having a change of landlord.

Bearing these in mind, both the staff team and then the committee held strategic planning meetings to explore how such challenges might lead to benefits for Pablos. Out of a number of ideas explored, the two most promising ones revolved around, firstly, exploring ways of building upon the very successful outreach programs that have been developed over recent years and, secondly, identifying and approaching potential personal donors, utilizing appropriately-skilled volunteers to achieve this. Both approaches have been commenced and we will be evaluating progress made in the coming months.

It was also agreed that, alongside the above, Pablos will, through questionnaires, seek to gain a better understanding of both what the community ( including mental health providers) knows about Pablos as well as what individuals and groups who have experienced mental and emotional difficulties would like to aid their recovery. It is highly likely, too, that the soon-to-be-released recommendations from this year’s Government inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction will have a significant bearing on organisations such as ours and as a committee we will be paying close attention to what emerges.

Throughout the past year, Dee, our Director, has been an incredibly vital part of Pablos’ success in rising to any challenges that presented themselves and to identifying ways in which the organization can continue to grow into the future. She has done so with a huge enthusiasm as well as a deep understanding of the values that are important for Pablos and Pablos’ artists. So it has been sad to see Dee recently leave the role of Director but pleasing to see what she has managed to achieve in a relatively short space of time and also to know that she will be continuing to contribute to the wider community in her new role at Family Works. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank Dee for everything she has contributed to Pablos. Similarly, I wish to acknowledge Menno Huibers and the rest of the staff team for continuing to ensure that Pablos’ functions well whilst we seek a replacement for Dee, as well as thanking Gaelen MacDonald, who has made herself temporarily available to assist with funding issues etc.

Tēnā koutou katoa,

This will be my last annual report for Pablos Inc and it is my pleasure to hand the reins over to the next Director knowing that we as a team have worked hard to reduce our deficit and focus on the future, there is a lot to do still and I am here to provide advice any time. This year has seen quite a few changes, some good strategic focus and preparation for how future Pablos will continue its work in the coming decades. I would like to commend all the studio artists for their commitment to learning and growing their art practice. For taking steps to confidently take on new challenges, but most of all for nurturing themselves, their mental health and wellbeing. No creative journey here is without its challenges for both in-dividuals and as a group. Overall however, we have seen so many people empowered by the benefits they receive from an enriched environment, quality mentoring and having the time to explore and build new skills and talents. This was emphasised by the work done to make submissions to the mental health commission enquiry, our voices as a collective highlighted to need for bridging spaces like Pablos to exist for so many of our socially isolated commu-nity members in recovery or maintaining their health and well being.

Like so many NGO’s our biggest challenge is how to retain current funding and to grow independent funds for Pablos to remain open. This year the main focus was on grants and outreach funding. We applied to more corporate funders like Spark with no success, but we did achieve success with smaller grants from the Mazda Foundation; Good n the Hood and Johnson and Johnson. The last two were supported with some added support from our committee members Kevin O’Neill and Shelly Reet, both even appeared in the Good n the Hood commercials showing that we have a committee that will go the extra mile whenever they can. Wellington City Council and our usual funds from places like the Lotteries and COGS were very supportive this year of our successful efforts to decrease our deficit and to increase our volunteers to save on wage costs. We also encouraged our artists to contribute to the studio and gallery as volunteers, mentors and planners. Wellington City Council was key this year in providing funds to enable our gallery to have more volunteer support and involvement. We were also successful in working with Workbridge to successfully achieve an MSD contract that pays for one of our volunteers, Mel Upjohn, to grow skills and confidence as an employee of Pablos for two years. She has been a welcome addition to admin and will be supporting Pablos volunteers in various roles.

Directors Report

This year has also provided us with an opportunity to welcome Debbie Jordan as a new committee member. Debbie comes with a wealth of knowledge about mental health systems and networks and so is a great addition to the committee.

Finally, as in previous years, I wish to thank the various funding organisations, Arts Access Aotearoa, auction attendees, Roar Gallery customers, the rest of the committee, and all the Pablos artists and their supporters whose involvement continues to help Pablos be an important and flourishing creative space.

Other highlights from this year include many external exhibitions by our artists. Pablos art-ists were supported by Chris Barrand to run their own collective exhibition at Thistle Hall in February where they experienced all facets of running a week long site specific event. Soon after artists took part in the RAW art exhibition in Nelson and we were offered viewing space in local cafes. The first birthday of Front & Centre in Tory street produced an invite for artists to show around their conference centre walls. All of these opportunities that come along have helped with sales that inspire confidence and finances for our artists.

Pablos continues its other Porirua based programme at Tangaroa, Kenepuru, funded by the CCDHB. Tangaroa focuses on recovery and rehabilitation through providing people with the opportunity to learn new skills, and gain independence and empowerment for community living. Pablos model of creative learning/re-building, provides clients with individualised re-covery which works well within the unit’s rehabilitation treatment plans. Pablos tutor Francis takes care of that programme and has also been working hard in the Hutt Valley providing similar workshops for Pathways Community Day Service. This year he was also integral to a new initiative to help individuals use Pablos model to heal mentally challenging conditions after accidents that leave them paralysed and isolated. Lead Tutor Menno Huibers has spent time keeping our inner studio running and mentoring new and existing artists, and keep-ing our inner-city relationships alive and well. This year he introduced Diorama workshops to expand artists minds about how to work on a long running series of works that create alternative worlds. Morag Stokes runs our popular Tuesday workshops, providing a variety of new experiences and materials for people to explore. This year she inspired our artists by being one of the finalists in the Parkin Drawing Prize and also held a fabulous exhibition of her own at Potocki Gallery. Simon Basil-Jones who took on the admin role last year has been working very hard to support the many budgets we run, successfully achieving a clear and precise set of accounts for audit. Gallery coordinator Michele Irving moved on this year to other roles and continues to be a highly successful artist. In addition to help us cover people on leave we were able to hire a casual tutor Jason Holland who has vast art and educational experience, as well as the heart for what we do. I want to thank the incredible volunteers who have assisted us this year with the Auction and with Pablos operations. In particular we hosted three service learning students from the United States who helped us for a month. Your help has been amazing, your dedication to what Pablos does for the community is ir-replaceable.

I would personally like to thank the many wonderful people at Pablos for all the special work they do, the artists in particular who keep putting one foot in front of the other especially when it’s one of those days when it’s hard to face the often harsh realities of living in our society. I would also like to thank those of you that taught me so much and accepted me so wonderfully. My farewell will be in my heart forever and your beautiful words etched in my mind.

To all of you, Ngā mihi maioha!

Mere Kirihimete,

Deidre

From the Studio

Zinefest 2018 at Te Auaha Media School.

Yet again we have had an exciting year in the studio, working through new ideas and ven-tures. This year there was a real focus on diversity and the recognition and realising the importance of Tikanga and Kaupapa Māori with a real enthusiasm to further develop these aspects within our organisation in the future.

As we have done in previous years, we partnered up with one of our artists Reece Tong to develop and execute all the graphics around this year’s Pablos Annual Art Auction. As well as providing us with his wonderful designs (featured on the cover of this report) Reece also assisted us in developing his very own digital font featured on all the promotional materials for the auction. Reece’s artworks also ended up on our merchandise sold at the auction and ROAR! Gallery and his Tea towels, T-Shirts and Tote bags were very popular.

As Part of Lower Hutt’s Midwinter festival this year there was a runway competition includ-ing local celebrities and politicians called “Pimp my Jacket “ where a number of entries se-lected and decorated second hand suit jackets any which way they saw fit with some highly different and entertaining results. There was a number of Pablos artists entering the competition and Soraya Edwards walking away with the Highly Commended prize.

This year the Tutors have continued to develop the workshop program for the studio inject-ing new and interesting approaches to medium, processes and concepts to creativity, rang-ing from exploring single stencil screen print techniques using donated vinyl from Speedy signs and Screens donated by Artisan Screen prints, Pinhole camera workshops and a Diora-ma making workshops using recycled and donated materials with a real DIY ethos. This year also saw us actively participate in Wellington’s Annual Zinefest at Te Auaha Media School with a month long workshop feeding into the festival. We will be looking at growing this and making this an annual event for us.

As always Tuesday morning workshops with Morag Stokes are always varied and ever popular and this year was no exception. Running for eight years now Morag has managed to deliver an extremely broad spectrum of creative content from metal tooling relief works inspired by the Scottish artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh, to layering techniques using a wide range of Acrylic media monoprints for collages. Her workshops are the perfect intro-duction for artists new to our studio as well as providing established artists with new and different approaches to creativity and feedback into their own practice or as stand alone excersises. These workshops also provide opportunities for artists and volunteers to gain confidence in delivering their own workshop content, Kay Morgan’s watercolour work-shops being case and point.

Pinhole Camera WorkshopWorld pinhole camera day this year was April 29th. This event encourages people to make a pinhole camera take some photos and upload them onto their website. One of our artists has an interest in photography so was happy to run workshops talking about the history of pinhole photography and the more technical aspects of exposure times and developing the image. We hired a darkroom at the Wellington Arts Centre for the whole day and ventured out with our freshly made pinhole cameras. The results were mixed at first but throughout the day as people connected to the process and started to understand the relationship between aperture and exposure times good results were developed. We are hoping to utilise the darkroom again as those who are interested can develop their skills and hopefully pass on their knowledge to artists trying pinhole photography for the first time.

Screen-Printing WorkshopThis year we had a series of screen-printing workshops where we used Vinyl as the sten-cil, this was cut into the artists designs on the Scan and Cut machine then transferred to a screen. We used a squeegee to print onto paper and t-shirts. The paper prints were dis-played and sold at a cash and carry exhibition in ROAR! Gallery.

In September Menno and Jason ran a three hour workshop at the New salvation Army Day base open day in Newtown. The workshop involved the clients exploring their Identity and Whakapapa visually in a flag format. The workshop was extremely successful and we hope to carry on growing the connections in this area further in the coming year.

Outreach 2018

Salvation Army Open Day 2018.

PathwaysPathways continued this year every Friday. As with the previous years a variety of projects, techniques and media were used. Participation numbers were steady at about 3 people per session with enthusiastic participation. TangaroaArt with Pablos continued this year every Thursday with an average of about 8 artists. Some of those participated in Mix Studios’ Pimp My Jacket runway show. Other projects included skateboard art, shoe design, clay work and painting. This year Francis has been encouraging the artists to find their own style with some striking results. Some of the artists from Tanga-roa attended the Pablos Mid-Winter BBQ.

ACCThis year Jason and Francis have been going to James’ house to help him explore his art practise. After suffering a car crash James is tetraplegic with limited movement in his right arm. He has a deep passion for art and has appreciated the visits from Pablos tutors. We are currently awaiting word from ACC about continuing this programme as well funding to get James to visit the studio.

February 2018.300 and under brought together artists that represent the community that is Pablos for a group show in the iconic Thistle Hall. Artists were involved in the installation of the show, over 100 artworks! Also hosting the space and making sales. The show was open for a week in which time we had over 100 visitors.

RAW 2018‘Work outside the edge.’ Arts Council Nelson.Exhibition 10th May-16th June 2018.Four Pablos artists had work selected in re-sponse to Arts Council Nelson’s nationwide call out for art works. RAW ‘Work outside the edge’ showcased a range of artworks created by artists who have had no formal or traditional art training. The works in this show spoke about personal journeys and life histories that are expressed through cultivating a unique visual language. Pablos and ROAR! Gallery has always supported and exhibited work being made by artists who can be identified as ‘outsider’.Congratulations to our contributing art-ists for having work selected for this show especially to those who made some sales.

Gallery Report2018 has seen a bit of change for ROAR! Gallery with Michele Irving our Gallery Co-ordinator sadly leaving us at the end of 2017. With the decision not to replace Michele for the mo-ment it put the responsibility for maintaining this space as shared between the artists, staff and volunteers. This seemed to have called for a tightening of systems in regard to how things are organised and communicated between the people involved with the shows in the Gallery.

The year started at the tail end of a very successful ROAR! Mince Pies annual Christmas Cash and Carry exhibition featuring a range of works from the studio and beyond at a small gift price point of $150 and under.

Following that came our annual Fresh and Fruity exhibition, showcasing new and exciting artworks from our very own studio.

Johanna Grant - Mackie is an artist that has worked extremely hard and consistently on her art practice and regularly attends Pablos Art Studios. This year we feel extremely honoured to be able to provide her with her own solo show , with her incredibly vibrant colourful works adorning the walls of our Gallery during the Month of March.

Taking us into the winter months we thought we would get a bit experimental on it and taking the works developed in a Diorama workshop from the studio and placing it within a Gallery context as a fully realised interactive Pablos miniature theme park.

Due to the changes within the gallery and some discussion amongst staff and the artists we realised that due to the Gallery not needing to perform fiscally to the same levels as in previous years, it opened up some different approaches and opportunities of how the space can be utilised including cultural exchanges. This took the shape of the Massey Show – “Opulence” which took place early October. This brought in a group of five Massey Fine Arts Graduates who showed their work and will share their knowledge through some workshops and presentations in upcoming months within the studio and strengthen further ties within the community.

Overall we believe ROAR! Gallery remains a viable space and important addition to Pablos Art Studios as an incredibly effective interface or cultural conduit between our artists and the wider creative community.

Finance ReportPablos accounts show a deficit of income over expenditure of $11K for the twelve months ended 30 June 2018 This compares with $17K deficit for the twelve months ended 30 June 2017.

Comparing the two years’ income; total income has decreased $14K. This is partly due to a decrease of $16K through donations and our annual Art Auction.

Expenses have decreased by $20K compared to last year. This was driven by staff changes which lead to a decrease in wage expenses. As well as a decrease in auction expenses and studio materials.

At 30 June 2018 Pablos had a strong cash position with $88K in working capital. However, this is down $5K from the previous year.

Income in addition to MSD, funding needs to be increased to enable Pablos to operate back in the black on a consistent basis. This is important as the organization cannot afford to run continuous budgeted deficits because our strong cash position will be whittled away.

Pablos achieved another very successful Art Auction in October 2017, raising $58K The auc-tion remains a very important part of our independent fundraising activities.

The committee is considering other income ideas to be proactive in maintaining our strong position.

I’d like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Pablos funders, other sponsors and staff; without your continued involvement Pablos would not exist. A special thanks to Simon for the work he does on the accounts that make it easy for me to do the job as Treasurer.

Independent auditor’s report

To the Members of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated Opinion We have audited the accompanying performance report of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated on pages 5 to 13 which comprises the statement of financial performance and statement of cash flows for the year ended 30 June 2018, the statement of financial position as at 30 June 2018, and the statement of accounting policies and notes to the performance report. In our opinion: a) the accompanying performance report presents fairly, in all material respects:

• the financial position of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated as at 30 June 2018, and its financial performance, and cash flows for the year then ended

in accordance with Public Benefit Entity Simple Format Reporting – Accrual (Not-For-Profit) issued by the New Zealand Accounting Standards Board. Basis for Opinion We conducted our audit of the statement of financial performance, statement of financial position, statement of cash flows, statement of accounting policies and notes to the performance report in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (New Zealand) (ISAs (NZ)). Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the ‘Auditor’s responsibilities for the audit of the performance report’ section of our report. We are independent of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated in accordance with Professional and Ethical Standard 1 (Revised) ‘Code of ethics for assurance practitioners’ issued by the New Zealand Auditing and Assurance Standards Board, and we have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with these requirements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. Other than our capacity as auditor we have no relationship with, or interests in, Pablos Art Studios Incorporated. Other information The management committee are responsible for the other information. The other information obtained at the date of this auditor’s report is the entity information and statement of service performance, but does not include the statement of financial performance, statement of cash flows, statement of financial position, the statement of accounting policies and notes to the performance report, and our auditor’s report thereon. Our opinion on the performance report does not cover the other information and we do not express any form of other opinion or assurance conclusion thereon. In connection with our audit of the performance report, our responsibility is to read the other information and, in doing so, consider whether the other information is materially inconsistent with the

statements audited or our knowledge obtained in the audit, or otherwise appears to be materially misstated. If, based on the work we have performed on the other information obtained prior to the date of this auditor’s report, we conclude that there is a material misstatement of this other information, we are required to report that fact. We have nothing to report in this regard. Management committee’s responsibilities for the performance report The management committee are responsible for: a) Identifying outcomes and outputs, and quantifying the outputs to the extent practicable, that are

relevant, reliable, comparable and understandable, to report in the statement of service performance

b) the preparation and fair presentation of the performance report on behalf of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated which comprises: • the entity information • the statement of service performance; and • the statement of financial performance, statement of financial position, statement of cash

flows, statement of accounting policies and notes to the performance report in accordance with Public Benefit Entity Simple Format Reporting – Accrual (Not-For-Profit) issued by the New Zealand Accounting Standards Board, and

c) for such internal control as the management committee determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the performance report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the performance report, the management committee are responsible on behalf of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated’s for assessing Pablos Art Studios Incorporated’s ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters related to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the management committee either intend to liquidate Pablos Art Studios Incorporated or to cease operations, or have no realistic alternative but to do so. Auditor’s responsibilities for the audit of the performance report Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the performance report is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with ISAs (NZ) will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the decisions of users taken on the basis of the performance report. As part of an audit in accordance with ISAs (NZ), we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also: • Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the performance report, whether due to

fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.

• Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated’s internal control.

• Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and related disclosures made by management.

• Conclude on the appropriateness of the use of the going concern basis of accounting by the management committee and, based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on Pablos Art Studios Incorporated’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the performance report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause Pablos Art Studios Incorporated to cease to continue as a going concern.

• Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the performance report, including the disclosures, and whether the performance report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.

We communicate with the management committee regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit. This report is made solely to the members of Pablos Art Studios Incorporated. Our audit has been undertaken so that we might state to the members those matters we are required to state to them in an auditors’ report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the members, for our audit work, for this report, or for the opinions we have formed.
