Tune Book 2

Credits and Notes.

3. Lyngeberg’s Hopska/ Polka Sekstur. A couple of Swedish polkas, slightly rewritten and a harmony added. A hopska is supposed to be played, in part, with a bouncing bow action.4. The Pinch of Snuff. A rip-roaring reel in three keys, the last part of which was lilted down the telephone to the compiler by Tom McConville, the Geordie Fiddler.5. The Jig of Slurs/ The Lark in the Morning. The 1st tune was written by Pipe Major George S. McLennan of the Gordon Highlanders, the 2nd is Trad. Irish, two superb jigs.6. Sadie at the back Door/ Cotton Baggin’. Fierce, syncopated American reels.7. The Rumbling Quadrille. Chris Parkinson gave this tune, he learned it from a Danish Accordionist named Torben, I’m sure it’s a fiddle tune though.8. The Westphalia Waltz. This tune must have German origins, based on an arrangment by Joe Stephenson.9. The Squirrel in the Tree/ Willy Taylor’s/ Ros Castle. The first two came from the playing of Willy Taylor, The Northumbrian fiddler, the last from Dave Ball.10. & 11. Planxty Irwin. Two versions of O’Carolan’s delightful waltz in three parts.12. The Mississippi Sawyer/ The Arkansas Traveler/ The Donkey Reel. A good set of tunes for a square dance.13. The Pride of Petrivore/ The Poppyleaf. The first of these two hornpipes is the tune of a song, the second was given by Chris McShane.14. Coleraine/ Syracuse/ The One Horned Sheep. Good toe-tapping session tunes.15. Herr Roloff’s Farewell/ The Marquis of Huntly. A slow air by J. Scott Skinner, followed by a strathspey, gives an interesting contrast in style and rhythm.16. The Dancing Tailor/ O’Carolan’s Fancy. A pair of cheerful, old-fashioned jigs given to the compiler by Pat Neilly, who was a fine traditional Irish fiddler, and a grand chap.17. Gary Owen/ Heather Hills/ Bonnie Doon. Three handy Scottish jigs, the last one can be played very successfully as a waltz.18. Trettondagsmarchen. ( The 30 Days March.) A very popular Swedish march.19. Carolan’s Concerto. A remarkable 17th Cy. Italianate Irish tune by Turlough O’Carolan.20. & 21. Ymdaith y Dafaid, Alawon Ymdaith. A couple of cheery Welsh marches.22. Gardy Bylaten. The Swedish polka, in two part harmony.23. Big Scioty/ The Lady in the Lake. Two wild and wicked syncopated American reels.24. The Streets of Dublin/ The Rocky Road to Dublin/ Foxhunters Jig. A set of slip jigs of differing character.25. Pentland Hills. A slow air written by J. Oswald in the 18th century, arranged by Pauline Page for a fiddlers summer school in 1984, rearranged slightly by the compiler.26. A Trip to Leeds/ Skipton Lasses/ Richmond Ball. Finally, three Yorkshire reels ( or possibly rants ) from the William Vickers manuscript of 1770.

I hope you enjoy this collection of tunes compiled for the Sheffield Traditional Fiddlers Society. Some of the tunesare arranged in two part or three part harmony and most have been `road tested` by the Society members. Chords areas simple as possible so that improvisation is encouraged, slurs are written in for rough guidance only and can beignored with impunity. These tunes can be played on other melody instruments with little or no alteration. Above all, share these tunes with your friends and enjoy them!
