Internationales Symposium ANTON PROKESCH VON OSTEN

Diplomat, Orientalist, Sammler und Schriftsteller

Donnerstag, 20. – Samstag, 22. Oktober 2016 Universalmuseum Joanneum, Kunsthaus Graz

Am 26. Oktober 2016 jährt sich zum 140. Mal der Todestag des aus Graz stammenden öster-reichischen Diplomaten, Orientalisten, Sammlers und Schriftstellers Anton Prokesch von Osten (1795–1876). Die Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz, Institut für Archäologie, und das Universalmuseum Joanneum, Abteilung Archäologie & Münzkabinett, nehmen dieses Gedenkdatum gemeinsam mit der Österreichischen Urania für Steiermark zum Anlass, um sich in einem Symposium einer Persönlichkeit zu nähern, die wohl zu den bemerkenswertestes Gestalten in der Geschichte der Beziehungen zwischen Europa und dem Orient im 19. Jahrhundert gehört. Prokesch-Osten war aber nicht nur Diplomat und Kulturvermittler. Vielseitig begabt und interessiert wirkte er auch als Schriftsteller, war als Sammler tätig und widmete sich der Geographie, Altertumskunde, Ägyptologie, Archäologie und Numismatik. Ziel des Symposiums ist es, möglichst viele Aspekte und Tätigkeitsfelder Prokesch-Ostens, aber auch sein kultur- und geistesgeschichtliches Umfeld zu beleuchten. Dies soll durch ein Zusammenwirken von altertumswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, Geographie, Geschichte, Kunstgeschichte, Literaturwissenschaft, Numismatik, Orientalistik, Politikwissenschaft, Religionswissenschaft und Wissenschaftsgeschichte erreicht werden. Anmeldung für Vorträge bis 30. April 2016. Die Vortragslänge beträgt 30 Minuten mit der anschließenden Möglichkeit zur Diskussion. Kongresssprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch. Interessierte sind eingeladen, bis zum 30. April 2016 ein kurzes, maximal 250 Wörter umfassendes Abstract (Titel, Kurzbeschreibung des Themas) einzureichen. Eine Publikation der Vorträge ist vorgesehen. Wir freuen uns auf Ihre Vorschläge und bitten darum, diesen Aufruf auch an andere mögliche Vortragende und Teilnehmer/innen weiterzuleiten. International Symposium ANTON PROKESCH VON OSTEN

Diplomat, orientalist, collector and writer

Thursday 20th – Saturday 22nd October 2016 Universalmuseum Joanneum, Kunsthaus Graz

The 26th October 2016 will be the 140th anniversary of the death of Austrian diplomat, orientalist, collector and writer Anton Prokesch von Osten (1795–1876) from Graz. The Institute for Archaeology at the University of Graz, and the Department Archaeology and Coin Cabinet, Universalmuseum Joanneum, together with the Austrian Urania for Styria, have taken this anniversary as an opportunity to organise a symposium that brings us closer to one of the most remarkable people in the history of 19th century European-Oriental relations. Prokesch-Osten was not only a diplomat and a cultural mediator. He was a man of many talents and interests who was also a writer and a collector, focussing on geography, archaeology, Egyptology and numismatics. The aim of this symposium is to look at as many of Prokesch-Osten’s different aspects and areas of work as possible and to examine his cultural, intellectual and historical background. This breadth of topics will be achieved by collaboration between different fields: disciplines that deal with antiquity, but also geography, history, art history, literary studies, numismatics, oriental studies, political science, religious studies and the history of science. Register for talks by 30st April 2016 Lectures will be 30 minutes long and can be followed by discussion. Congress languages are German and English. En los últimos años se han producido significativos avances en relación con la digita-lización de colecciones museísticas y la publicación en línea de las mismas. Estas jor-nadas de trabajo reúnen a diferentes instituciones comprometidas con la publicación de sus fondos en línea en diferentes ámbitos. Todas ellas se muestran partidarias de un trabajo colaborativo, apoyado sobre el empleo de ontologías unificadas y respetuo-so con los estándares de la comunidad científica internacional. La disciplina numis-mática ha resultado particularmente fructífera en esta materia, ya que ha generado iniciativas modélicas que la convierten en un ejemplo de trabajo colaborativo apoyado sobre tesauros digitales y adaptado a la filosofía Linked data.La reunión tiene por objeto hacer hincapié en diferentes aspectos teóricos y prácticos a partir de los diferentes proyectos de instituciones nacionales e internacionales. Se expondrán los criterios seguidos en estas experiencias y los recursos necesarios para poner de relieve una digitalización eficiente de las colecciones museísticas.Estas iniciativas parten de la voluntad institucional de poner a disposición del público sus fondos. Los esfuerzos por compatibilizar diferentes sistemas documentales de gestión de fondos, para que puedan conectarse con proyectos colaborativos naciona-les e internacionales, es uno de los retos más importantes de estas iniciativas. Los ejemplos de colecciones nacionales e internacionales sirven como muestra de las di-ferentes realidades a las que se enfrenta la publicación de colecciones.

Au cours des dernières années, des progrès décisifs ont été réalisés dans le domaine de la numérisation et de la publication en ligne des collections muséales. Cette jour-née de travail rassemble différentes institutions impliquées dans la diffusion et dans la divulgation en ligne de collections patrimoniales de natures variées. Elles expri-ment le souhait de s’associer à une démarche collaborative, nécessitant l’adoption d’ontologies unifiées et conforme aux exigences de la communauté scientifique in-ternationale. La discipline numismatique constitue à cet égard un champ pionnier, comme en témoigne l’émergence d’initiatives exemplaires, fondées sur le développe-ment de thesaurus numériques et respectueuses de la philosophie Open linked data.Cette réunion met l’accent sur une variété d’enjeux théoriques et pratiques, à travers la présentation des projets de numérisation élaborés par diverses institutions espa-gnoles et internationales. Il s’agit d’identifier les contraintes et les critères propres à chacune de ces expériences, ainsi que les ressources requises pour la mise en œuvre d’une politique de numérisation efficace.Ces initiatives résultent du souhait partagé par les différentes institutions représen-tées de mettre leurs collections à la disposition de publics variés. L’une des probléma-tiques centrales est d’élaborer des outils permettant d’assurer la compatibilité des différents systèmes documentaires de gestion des collections avec l’architecture des projets collaboratifs nationaux et internationaux. Les exemples de collections natio-nales et internationales expriment la variété des situations rencontrées pour la numé-risation et la divulgation des collections patrimoniales.

FLAME (Framing the Late Antique and early Medieval Economy)

Public Conference, 29-30 April, 2016, Princeton University

FLAME is an international large-scale collaborative digital humanities project that investigates the transition from Late

Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages, covering Western Afro-Eurasia from Ireland to Iran over four centuries from an

innovative economical perspective. More specifically, we examine and analyze the changes in the economy c.325-

725 while using the most widely available – and underutilized – proxy, metal coinage, which survives in over a million

published specimens.

Over the past couple of years we have created a relational database that includes information about 600 mints minting

about 60 denominations over 400 years at an annual level of resolution when possible. We have developed a preli-

minary digital infrastructure and mapping tool (example below), which will be made available to the public after our

conference at Princeton. Our team’s ambitious goal for the second phase of our project over the next three years is to

collect find-context data about one million coins and make this information accessible through an intuitive yet powerful

user interface.

Österreichische Numismatikertag wird vom Geldmuseum der Österreichischen Nationalbank in Zusamme-narbeit mit dem Institut für Numismatik und Geldgeschichte der Universität Wien, der Abteilung Documenta Antiqua des Instituts für Kulturgeschichte der Antike der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und dem Münzka-binett des Kunsthistorischen Museums Wien organisiert. Der internationale numismatische Kongress steht unter dem Motto „Stabilität und Instabilität von Geldsystemen“ und findet am 19.-20. Mai 2016 in den Räumlichkeiten des Geldmuseums, im Hauptgebäude der Notenbank in Wien statt (Otto-Wagner-Platz 3, A-1090 Wien). Das noch vorläufige Programm sieht wie folgt aus:

Ihr Profil:

Mit überdurchschnittlichem Erfolg abgeschlossenes Studium der Numismatik und Geldgeschichte oder eines kul-turwissenschaftlichen Faches (insbes. Geschichte, Klassische Archäologie, Kunstgeschichte) mit ausgeprägtem numismatischen und geldgeschichtlichem Schwerpunkt (Diplom-, Magister-, Mastergrad oder vergleichbare Qua-lifikation). Profunde Kenntnisse in antiker, mittelalterlicher oder moderner Numismatik und Geldgeschichte sowie numismatische Interessen für die anderen Epochen sind erforderlich. Research Programs

New project covering metal analysis

Numismatiska forskningsgruppen (Stockholm Numismatic institute), Stockholm has started a new project where students will make XRF-analyses of coins from the period c. 800-1650. Each student will cover c. 150 coins from a limited period of time based on material in Kungl. Myntkabinettet (Royal Coin Cabinet), Stockholm. The results will immediately be published in a new series (Metallanalyser av mynt/Metal analyses of coins) on the website of Numismatiska forskningsgruppen (www.archaeology.su.se/english/stockholm-nu-mismatic-institute). The first issue will be available in April 2016. Nordic material will be published in Swedish with an English summary. Non-Nordic material will be published in English. The project is financed by the Gunnar Ekström foundation for numismatic research.

Presentation

The doctoral workshop is organized in the context of the scienti f ic col laboration that for several years now, involves the German Archaeologic Institute at Madrid and l ’École des hautes études hispaniques et ibériques (Casa de Velázquez, Madrid), permitting young investigators to benefit from an area for exchanges. The theme of this new session focuses on the long distance trade, local exchanges and means of payment in the West during Antiquity.

The presentation of the workshop is intentional ly open in order to promote an interdiscipl inary and diachronic dialogue. It comes here to treat Trade in Antiquity in a multiscalar approach, i.e. both Mediterranean and European-wide local. Wil l be considered strategies and commercial networks, the actors and the terms of trade, as well as places and means of trade. The study of these different aspects wil l require to ask about the nature of the economy practiced in ancient times.


Thematical fields

-The commercial Network. Trade routes sea and land; sea shipping / road network; the terms of trade at long distance (commercial relays, mansiones); strategies for multiscalar trade (private companies, the role of the State, the service of the Annone, trade treaties and contracts...).

-Exchange actors. Traders and business people (Phoenicians, Greeks, Etruscans, Iberians, Romans, Celts...); professions of trade (brokers, dealers, bankers...); Who sponsors? Who performs? Who buys?

-Exchange places. Merchant contact places; bulk breaking places; Exchange places (emporia, port, city, market, sanctuaries and temples...) and the terms of trade (neutral i ty of places, asyl ia); the commercial infrastructures (from the exploitation places to places of storage and sale).

-Products and instruments trade. Products researched and exchanged; trade in raw, semi-f inished and f inished products; the relationship between trade and transfer of technology (innovations); the terms of trade; the units of account and weight units, pre-monetary and monetary values (currency in weight, minted currency, monetary parity), the status of metals (gold / si lver / bronze)

The purpose of this workshop is to raise a scientif ic and methodological thought about economy in the antique World. This workshop is especial ly dedicated to doctoral students in history, archaeology and in historic anthropology, from universities and research centres of al l Europe and the Maghreb. In addit ion, through a multidiscipl inary approach, it aims to create an area for exchanges, experiences and analysis of the investigation practices in many different geographical contexts.

This way, each participant wil l have the opportunity to become actively involved in the enrichment of the exchanges presenting their doctoral research, working as a group and participating in a col lective thought, with the support of international prestigious experienced col leagues.

There is no registration fee.

The coordinators wil l inform them by mail on Apri l 22th whether or not they are accepted. The Casa de Velázquez wil l accommodate the 15 retained candidates from 12 to 17 June, offering (to those who don’t l ive in Madrid) an accommodation in a sharing double room, breakfast, lunch and visits. Travel l ing expenses and dinners are to be paid by the participants.

The Casa de Velázquez and the DAI-Madrid offer 3 scholarships of 300 € each one to students who are enrol led in a higher educational establ ishment of the Maghreb.

Exhibitions

Die Staatliche Münzsammlung München zeigt ab dem 12. Mai 2016 eine Sonderausstellung mit deutschen und österreichischen Medaillen zum Ersten Weltkrieg.

Die Ausstellung ist thematisch gegliedert, zeitlich reicht sie vom Kriegsbeginn 1914 bis zu den Nachwirkungen im Jahr 1919.

Zur Ausstellung erscheint ein ausführlicher Katalog mit Abbildungen und Erläuterungen von etwa 270 Medaillen, verfasst von Dietrich O. A. Klose, mit einem einführenden Essay von Markus Wesche.

Publicación de la tesis doctoral del prof. Albert Estra-da-Rius, conservador-jefe del Gabinet Numismàtic de Catalunya (Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya) referente a la histórica Casa de la Moneda de Barcelona –La Seca Reial- en un período concreto de la larga historia de emi-siones monetales en la ciudad condal. El período objeto de estudio es el correspondiente, a nivel político, al del desarrollo de la Corona de Aragón y se justifica por el control de la ceca en manos de una corporación, surgida al amparo de sus monarcas, conocida con el nombre de Capítulo o Colegio de obreros y monederos de la ceca real de Barcelona. Antes y después del arco cronológi-co tratado la organización de la casa de la moneda es lo suficientemente diversa como para justificar estudios independientes.

La corporación estaba integrada por los profesionales de la fabricación de la moneda y desarrolló, a partir de un primer privilegio de 1208 y hasta su disolución en 1714- una amplia autonomía y una compleja organización tan-to a nivel corporativo y del taller monetario como de la corte de justicia privativa. Este modelo, inspirado en los vigentes en el resto de Europa, sería trasladado por la misma monarquía al resto de casas de moneda de la Corona de Aragón a las que, a menudo, era trasladado personal originario de Barcelona. Entre estas, Valencia, Zaragoza, Mallorca, Perpignan, Iglesias y Cagliari. Está atestiguado que obreros y monederos trasladaban consi-go el acervo jurídico de privilegios originarios y de organi-zación corporativa así como toda su cultura de trabajo y sus conocimientos técnicos.

Este tipo de organización no fue obstáculo para que la casa de la moneda de Barcelona –de titularidad real pero de derecho y, sobre todo en la práctica, delegada al que-hacer del poderoso municipio de Barcelona- fuera pio-nera en su ámbito en la renovación de la tecnología de fabricación de la moneda. Así, sin abandonarse nunca la fabricación a martillo, se adoptaron los molinos en 1610 y se construyó una prensa de volante en 1707. Todo ello, ocupando desde el último cuarto del siglo XIV un mismo espacio arquitectónico –el recinto de La Seca- cuya me-moria y sus restos perduran hasta la actualidad junto a la calle del mismo nombre.

Nina Andreevna Frolova (1936–2015)

Nina Andreevna Frolova was born in Serpukhov in 1936. In 1960 she graduated from the archaeological depart-ment of the Historical Faculty of the Moscow State Uni-versity where she was studying ancient history, classical archaeology and epigraphy under the guidance of the great Russian archaeologists B.N. Grakov and V.D. Bla-vatsky. Her thesis was devoted to the study of Kuban region dealings based on the archaeological sources. Ar-chaeological experience clearly affected Frolova’s study and interpretation of numismatic material, especially coin hoards.

In 1960, Nina Andreevna Frolova became curator of Classical and Byzantine coins at the State Historical Museum. Since that time her life has inextricably been linked with the Museum and its collection. During these years the Museum’s collection of Greek and Roman coins, one of the greatest collections in Russia, has continuously been completed by new coins and hoards and systematized according to modern numismatic knowledge. In the course of her work with the collection N.A. Frolova paid the most attention to the coins of Greek colonies in the Black Sea region, especially the coinage of the Bosporus Kingdom.

In 1967 she wrote her PhD thesis ‘Coinage and monetary circulation of the Bosporus in 69/69–210 AD’. In 1960–1980 she published a series of articles, with detailed studies of the coinage of the Bosporus Kings based on catalogues of Bosporus coins from many collections, with the analysis of coin dies and hoards. She was one of the first Russian scholars who started to use numismatic sources for the reconstruction of the history of the

Bosporus Kingdom, its royal genealogy, the economic and political relations between Bosporus and Rome as well as Chersonesus Taurica.

In 1970–1990 N.A. Frolova studied the Coinage of the Bosporus Kingdom of III–IV c. AD, collecting new numismatic material, comprising all new coin hoards from ancient settlements of the Crimea and Taman peninsula. As a result, she corrected dates of many Bosporus coin issues, the most important of which was the date of the last Bosporus coins. In 1985 she defended her doctoral dissertation ‘Coinage of the Bosporus of the first centuries AD’. That work was devoted to the history of Late Bosporus coinage and a Corpus of the coins from archaeological excavations and many Russian, European and American collections supplemented by metrological data and die study.

At the end of the 1980s N.A. Frolova worked on the study of problems of Bosporus coinage of VI–I c. BC. That work was summarized in a fundamental monograph ‘Die frühe Münzprägung vom Kimmerischen Bosporos (Mitte 6. bis Anfang 4. Jh. v. Chr.). Die Münzen der Städte Pantikapaion, Theodosia, Nymphaion und Phanagoria sowie der Sinder’, which was published in 2004 in Berlin.

As a curator of the State Historical museum N.A. Frolova paid a lot of attention to publishing the collection of Classical and Byzantine coins. In the last 20 years she published a large collection of coins of Tyras, Olbia and Chersonesus Taurica, the catalogue of gold coins from the collection of the State Historical museum and a collection of Roman coins.

The scientific activity of N.A. Frolova was organized in accordance with the best traditions of Russian classical numismatics initiated by A.V. Oreshnikov, A.N. Zograf, D.B. Shelov and K.V. Golenko. According to this tradition she generously shared her experience with colleagues and was extremely helpful. N.A. Frolova was a very communicative person. She regularly took part in Russian and international numismatic conferences. In 2009, at the 14th International Numismatic Congress that took place in Glasgow, she was elected an honorary member of the International Numismatic Council.

Nina Andreevna Frolova died on October 20th, 2015.In the hearts of her friends and colleagues Nina Andreevna Frolova will always be one of the greatest Russian scholars of the old school as well as a very supportive person who kept the best traditions of Russian spiritual culture.

Travel Grants 2016–2017

Following article 1 of the constitution, «to facilitate cooperation among individuals and institutions in the field of numismatics and related disciplines», the INC offers for 2016/2017 a travelling scholarship of EUR 3.000 and a grant-in-aid of EUR 1.000.

Applicants must be less than 35 years old on December 31, 2015 and be engaged on or intending to undertake an important numismatic research project. The recipients will be able to visit foreign coin cabinets or other centers of numismatic research, to study material and to develop contacts with other scholars. Applications in Spanish, English, French, German or Italian should be sent to the Secretary of the INC, Prof. François de Callataÿ, Royal Library of Belgium - Bibliothèque royale de Belgique, Boulevard de l’Empereur 4 - Keizerslaan 4, B 1000 Brussel, Belgique / Belgium, postmarked by April 29, 2016, and include:

1) a curriculum vitae, with a list of publications, a detailed plan of research with travel itinerary

2) a reference from a numismatic specialist who is or will be supervising the work

3) a recommendation from a member of the INC (an honorary member or the responsible official of a member institution, but not a member of the INC Committee).

The Committee of the INC will award the scholarship and the grant-in-aid at its meeting in 2016 after examining the applications in consultation with specialists from the INC or others if necessary.

Le Bureau du CIN attribuera la bourse et la subvention lors de sa réunion de 2016 après examen des dossiers par des experts, de préférence membres de la CIN.

I destinatari saranno in grado di visitare Meda-glieri stranieri o altri centri di ricerca numismatica, per lo studio dei materiali e per sviluppare contatti con altri studiosi.

Le domande di partecipazione - redatte in Spagnolo, Inglese, Francese, Tedesco o Italiano - dovranno essere inviate al Segretario dell’INC Prof. François de Callataÿ, Royal Library of Belgium - Bibliothèque royale de Belgi-que, Boulevard de l’Empereur 4 - Keizerslaan 4, B 1000 Brussel, Belgique / Belgium, con timbro postale prima del 29 apile 2016, e comprendere:

1) un curriculum vitae, con elenco delle pubblicazioni, e un piano dettagliato della ricerca con annesso itinerario di viaggio.

Il Consiglio dell’ INC assegnerà la borsa di studio e il contributo nella riunione del 2016, dopo l’esame delle domande, consultando anche - se necessario - gli specialisti dell’ INC o altri studiosi.

Borsa annuale 2016–2017

Gemäss Art. 1 ihrer Konstitution «to facilitate cooperation among individuals and institutions in the field of numismatics and related disciplines» vergibt der Internationale Numismatische Rat für das Jahr 2016/2017 ein Reisestipendium in Höhe von 3.000 EUR und eine kleinere Subvention von 1.000 EUR.

Bewerben können sich junge Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler bis zu 35 Jahren (Stichtag 31 Dezember 2015), die ein größeres numismatisches Forschungsprojekt in Arbeit haben oder planen. Das Stipendium soll dazu dienen, Münzkabinette und andere numismatische Forschungstätten in anderen Ländern zu besuchen, das Material zu studieren und Kontakte mit anderen Wissenschaftlern zu knüpfen.

Die Entscheidung über die eingegangenen Bewerbungen trifft das Büro des INR nach der Beurteilung durch Sachverständige aus dem Kreis der Mitglieder des INR, in Ausnahmefällen auch durch andere Experten, an der Jahressitzung 2016.

Los receptores tendrán la posibilidad de visitar gabinetes monetarios extranjeros u otros centros de investigación, para estudiar materiales y establecer contacto con otros investigadores.

Las solicitudes, que podrán presentarse en español, inglés, francés, alemán o italiano, deben enviarse antes de 29 de abril de 2016 al Secretario del CIN Prof. François de Callataÿ, Royal Library of Belgium - Bibliothèque royale de Belgique, Boulevard de l’Empereur 4 - Keizerslaan 4, B 1000 Brussel, Belgique / Belgium, e incluir:
