Messages from Esteemed UlamaWhile the legacy of Islam has presented innumerable contributions to civilization, its greatest and most enduring legacy is a living one i.e. the institution of the Ulama, the Pious Scholars who are regarded as inheritors of the knowledge of the Prophets (peace be upon them).

Their many years of intensive training and study of Islamic discipline at the highest level has equipped and elevated them to leadership roles in the community. Well-versed in jurisprudence, sciences of the study of the Noble Quraan, the Hadith which is the traditions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) they are teachers and Imaams of their communities which accounts for about a quarter of Mankind, Alhamdulillah.

In saluting the noble work of all our Ulama, on this occasion we bring you important messages from some of our leading lights. May Allah Ta’ala bless them abundantly for their service to the Ummah and elevate them to the pinnacle of success in this world and the Hereafter, Aameen.

Special Salawaat and Choicest Salaam be upon our Master, Hazrat Muhammed, his noble family and illustrious companions, and upon all those who follow their guidance and teaching.

I would like to extend my heartfelt duas and warm greetings to all the members and staff of the South African National Halaal Association on the occasion of its AGM for 2017. It is indeed a great bounty from Allah to have a dedicated organisation striving to provide Halaal alternatives in the food industry to Muslims in this country. Amidst so many challenges and trying times, it is a tribute to this organisation that it is still able to ensure strict control and regulation over the Halaal certification of products. May Allah Ta’ala grant them further success, keep them all steadfast on the noble principles of Shar’iah, and fulfil their pious and lawful ambitions, Aameen.

On behalf of the National Muslim Prison Board, I take this opportunity to thank SANHA for its continued support to our field of work, and for its consistent and most valuable co-operation in this regard. Muslims today are reengaging their traditional values for modern times. Both in Muslim and non-Muslim majority societies, traditional values like modesty, the concept of Halaal, Islamic principles regulating finance are being negotiated for our modern context. The result is a flourishing Islamic economy.

Halaal, an Arabic word defined as permissible according to Islamic law, is required for both goods and services for Muslims. While most products such as food, beverages, beauty and personal care products can spot a Halaal label, it is still necessary for Muslims to lead the Halaal way of life, which means ensuring their consumption, behaviour, dressing, social interactions and every other aspect is aligned with Islamic beliefs.

South Africa is Sub-Saharan Africa’s Halaal powerhouse, with its Halaal business valued at R43.5 billion. Despite Muslims being a minority, less than 2% of its population being Muslim, the country is one of the top five non-IOC countries most visited by Muslim travelers. South Africa has the region’s most developed Halaal ecosystem, Halaal products are widely available in the domestic market, and the country is a springboard for entering the rest of Africa.

The major Halaal certifier in South Africa, SANHA, keeping in line with its Mission Statement;

'To establish a representative, professional, internationally recognized Halaal authority which promotes professionalism and excellence in the process of certifying, monitoring and promoting Halaal products in accordance with the Divine dictates of the Shar’iah (Islamic Law)”, has certified hundreds of outlets, not only in this country but in several other countries throughout the continent, and the number of applications coming in has increased constantly.

“Halaal certification is not just about the product, but about the process,”A 2001 advertising pamphlet published by SANHA bears the slogan, “When In Doubt, Leave It Out” with reference to the principle of determining the permissibility of a food product. This type of communication indicated the desire to create a consumer who was weary of the importance of Halaal and therefore, reliant on certifi cation. In the same issue this was re-iterated. Consumers were asked to “become vigilant. Question the contents of items in your home, business and surroundings and to phone, write or call for assistance.” This process of compelling people to rely on Halaal authorities was part of the demand creation that Halaal authority, SANHA, has been engaged in.

Gaining the trust of both the Muslim consumer and the wider audience while certification and maintenance of processes within Halaal are important for businesses to gain trust from consumers, many consumers are unaware of what constitutes a Halaal product. Significantly, many global controversies surrounding the religion, such as the rise of Islamic extremist groups, shook the global positioning and branding of the Islamic economy. Thus, Islamic councils and businesses in the Halaal industry must be able to appeal to a broader audience to ensure growth.

With a consumer base of predominantly young 1.7 billion Muslims around the world, growing at two times the rate of the global population, the Islamic economy is one of the fastest growing markets in the world. At a time where the IMF describes the global economy entering ‘secular stagnation’ due to a


decline in investments and an ageing population, the Islamic economy stands in stark contrast offering the most viable solution to global economic growth and success in the 21st Century.

The South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA) being an international, non-profit organisation, representing the Muslim Ummah on all matters pertaining to the general application of the term Halaal with specific reference to Islamic dietary laws and its membership comprising of leading Theological Bodies and leading Professional Organisations of global repute plays an important role in promoting the industry.

The organisation is also among the founder members of the World Halaal Council and enjoys international recognition from both Muslim countries and the broader global community. Despite all the criticism the Organization has kept up its commitments from its inception, 21 years ago.

· To develop and implement effective control and monitoring systems thereby guaranteeing to the highest possible standards that products labelled “Halaal” are truly Halaal compliant.

· To promote and implement effective quality systems which encourages the participation of all Muslim consumers in the policing of the Halaal industry.

· To build relationships across the mainstream Ulama thereby generating the highest possible uniform standards for the certification of Halaal products.

· To develop National and International collaborative relationships in order to enhance and promote the Halaal industry.

· To maintain a quality service to the industry which embraces the Halaal certification programme.

· To protect and nurture the right of the Halaal-conscious consumer.

· To act against transgressors in a vigorous and transparent manner.

· To develop, train and support its staff in the delivery of quality products and service to the industry.

The importance of Halaal in the life of a Muslim cannot be overstated. It is a direct commandment of Allah SWT to eat from the Halaal (lawful) and tayib (pure) things which he has provided, and to avoid the path of the doubtful and forbidden, which has been likened to following the footsteps of Shaytaan.

Allah SWT says: O you People! Eat of what is on earth, Halaal and pure, and do not follow the footsteps of the Satan; Indeed, for he is to you an open enemy (2:168)

Indeed, the very act of consuming Halaal is a testimony to our belief in Allah SWT and his revelation and laxity in this regard places a serious question on our sincerity and belief.


Allah SWT says: Eat of that (meat) over which the name of Allah (swt) has been pronounced (while slaughtering that animal/bird), if you are believers in His revelations (6:118)

Eating Halaal is not only fulfilling a divine commandment, but also a source of great blessing that will make good deeds easier for us, allow our dua to be answered, and save us from the fire of Jahannum (Insha Allah). On the contrary, the Ahadith are clear that those who are not conscientious of what they eat, and stray into haram, will have duas rejected even if they are in an otherwise pitiable and humbled state.

Rasulullah (SAW) mentioned (the case of) a man traveling on a long arduous journey, greatly troubled and distressed, with dishevelled hair, crying to Allah SWT, O my Lord! O my Lord! But, his food is Haraam, his drink is Haraam, his dress is Haraam and he is nourished with Haraam. How then can his dua be accepted (Muslim 1015)

Despite these clear injunctions and benefits of Halaal food and the severe consequences of being lax in this regard, many today have become living fulfilments of the description in Bukhari shareef where Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radhiallahu anhu) reports that the Prophet (SAW) said, “A time will come upon the people wherein a man will not bother what he intakes; whether from a Halaal source or Haraam.” (Bukhari 2059). This may not be overt, but our eating decisions often beg the question of whether we really care what we put into our mouths.

There used to be a time when eating Halaal was relatively easy, where we bought from our local butchers who were known Muslims and whose trustworthiness was never questioned. It was a time when food was minimally processed, and all additives were easily recognised. But the modern world is a confusing and complicated place and although the laws and boundaries of Halaal and Haraam are clearly defined, food products nowadays abound with the doubtful, the hidden ingredients and the incomprehensible codes. Yet, following our desires and taste buds, many of us choose to take the risk, wavering into those grey areas that will eventually lead us to Haraam (naudhubillah).

The utility and value of organisations such as SANHA in this kind of world is unquestionable. We have become a world of great specialisation, where no field of study is without its specialists, and the field of Halaal now requires such specialisation. We can be proud, as South African Muslims, that we have produced a Halaal body that is stringent, principled and well researched, allowing us to have peace of mind with regards to our consumption decisions. All those tricky issues and hidden ingredients in modern food production need a spotlight to make clear Halaal from Haraam. Our support for SANHA enables it to continue in this most noble enterprise.

Chairman’s AddressFOOD FOR THOUGHT…

All praise is due to Allah may His choicest salutations continue to descend upon our Master and Leader Muhammad (saw)

“Then let man look at [the sources of] his food …” (80:24)

Our world seems to be moving faster than ever before. We’re busier, more hurried, more distracted, and more stressed. As a society, we’re obsessed with speed and entertainment. Spurred by ground breaking technological advances our life has changed in more ways than we can imagine. What took days, weeks, or months now take hours or minutes to accomplish. Technology and the need for speed have created an insatiable desire for instant gratification. We hanker after instant food, instant travel, instant connectivity, instant information and even seek instant compatibility. We’ve come to expect things to happen so quickly that we become anxious and irritable at the slightest of delays. A computer science professor examined the viewing habits of 6.7 million internet users and found that subjects were not willing to wait for more than two seconds for information to download. He says: “After five seconds, the abandonment rate is 25 percent. When you get to 10 seconds, half are gone.”

Food MilesTraditional eating habits have changed radically over the past 30 years. Our rapid and ever changing lifestyle has reconfigured our consumption patterns based on the fact that we can now access food from around the globe. Although the term ‘Food Miles’ was first coined back in the 1990s, it is increasingly becoming more common in the public discourse. Food Miles is a way of expressing just how far the food we eat travels from the farm where it is first produced, before it ends up on our tables. It is a unit used to measure the distance a food product travels from where it is produced to where it is sold or consumed. It is estimated that the average American meal travels about 1500 miles (2414km) to get from farm to plate.

When you buy a packet of peeled prawns in the supermarket, it is likely they will have been fished in the seas off the north of Scotland, transported by road to a centralised freezing depot in the UK, transported by air to China to be peeled, as labour costs are far cheaper, then flown to another country to be packaged before it is eventually exported to a country thousands of miles away from the original source. From the grains in your breakfast cereal to the grapes in your juice, there is a strong chance that the food you eat on a daily basis has its origins thousands of kilometres away. In order to transport fruits and vegetables long distances, much of it is picked while still unripe and then gassed to “ripen”. It is highly processed in factories using preservatives, irradiation, and other means to keep it stable for transport and sale. All of those ‘food miles’ travelled and hours spent in transit – packed away in 18-wheeler trucks, on trains, or even in boats or airplanes – inevitably affects the quality of food, not just in terms of its taste, but also in its nutritional composition.

Fast FoodsIn this fast paced world, where people have busy routines and busier social lives, it becomes difficult for working individuals to take time out to prepare food. Around the world, people are becoming asset rich


but time poor. Family meal time has always been seen as an opportunity where members of the family gather to spend some quality time together while eating and chatting. With the emergence of fast food outlets, people are now spending less time together since they can just continue to eat while doing what they were doing. Convenience eating is growing apace as people have less time to cook meals. The local fast-food industry brings in more than R300-billion every year, according to Insight Survey, a South African-based market research company. Statistics South Africa recorded income from the “takeaway and fast-food outlet” sector as R170-billion in 2015.The percentage of adults who buy fast-food at least once a month increased from 66% in 2009 to more than 80% in 2015. Junk foods are calorie-dense and nutrient poor. They are mostly deep fried and are high in saturated fat. People who eat fast food more than twice a week drastically increase their chances of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and a host of other chronic problems.

Food AddictionHassan Al-Basri (ra) states that: “The test of Nabi Adam (as) (in Jannah) was food and it shall be your test until the Day of Qiyamah.” Mounting evidence suggests that the difficulty to resist highly palatable, calorie-rich foods represents a special case of addictive behaviour with similarities to other addictions. People who show signs of food addiction may also develop a kind of tolerance to food. They eat more and more, only to find that food satisfies them less and less. Ashley Gearhardt, co-creator of Yale University’s Food Addiction Scale, writes: “…a growing body of research […] puts “food” – or the processed chemicals that pass for food these days – in the same category as drugs of abuse.” For people who suffer from food addiction, consuming large quantities of food — usually highly palatable foods rich in fat, sugar, or starch — initially offers a rush of pleasurable sensations or a release from emotional distress. Yet these positive responses are soon followed by feelings of shame, guilt, and physical discomfort. A cycle very similar to other forms of substance addiction!

More than caloriesThe food we eat becomes very much part of who we are and what we are. Every cell in our body was created from the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. In addition to nourishing our bodies, food also affects the quality of our lives, our appearance, moods, weight, energy, the aging process and our overall health and well-being. The Prophet (saw) has said: “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls, to keep him going. If he must do that (fill his stomach), then let him fill one third with food, one third with drink and one third with air.” (Tirmidhi) Food not only nourishes our physical bodies but also shapes our character. A famous adage says: “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are.” Wholesome foods contribute to humility, intelligence, control of desire, and restraint of anger. If we are able to control our consumption we are able to control our action! The connection between consumption and action is clearly established from the verse that says: “O Messengers of Allah eat of the pure things and do good works” (23:51).

Secretarial ReportThis financial year has seen the 20th anniversary of the South African National Halaal Authority and it is with great pleasure that I present this secretarial report. The Theological Director will touch on the activities undertaken during the course of the year and I think it is pertinent to understand how we got here and evolved in the last two decades.

Prior to the formation of SANHA, halaal certification was a fragmented approach in which differences of policy between the certifying bodies at that time were exploited. This led to the word “Halaal” being manipulated at the expense of the Muslim consumer.

The vision behind SANHA extends back to the winter of 1995, when Mr Ayoub Mangera was asked to look at the controls and modus operandi of the Halaal Foods Industry (HFI). His report concluded the the system of operation at that time was highly fragmented and confusing to the Muslim consumer, does not help those operating in the Halaal Food Industry and singularly fails in providing adequate assurance to the Muslim Consumer that the products are in fact Halaal. Subsequently after three conferences held in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban respectively, the intent was present but the will sadly lacking. All parties present were clear of the benefits of a holistic approach, but only a few were prepared to pursue this elusive rainbow. In the middle of 1996, the subject was raised again and this time the approach was simply to deliver a binding document encompassing all the principles agreed at the December 1995 conference. This approach won support from the Ulama and the traders in the Halaal food industry generally. A constitutional document negotiated over three months was presented to the adopting conference on the 20th October 1996, and was duly passed after a thorough and wide ranging debate. This document represents the basis of SANHA and highlighted three key areas viz, awareness, availability and action.

SANHA was finally launched on the 20th October 1996. Since its establishment in 1996 SANHA has received overwhelming support from both the consumer and the broader food industry who longed for a cohesive, uniformed approach in the certification of Halaal foods.

In Mr Mangeras strategic document of founding purpose, he stated that SANHA will need an individual to drive it forward, who for the next three years or more must live, breathe, eat and drink SANHA. He further stated that the vision of SANHA could only become a reality if it was implemented.

In April 1997, Mr Ayoub Mangera employed such a person, Mr Suleman Mahomedy as the first Executive Officer to run the organization and oversee its financial needs. Hajee Suleman Mahomedy spent two years conducting the organizational administration which included the setting up of the South African National Halaal Authority Trust and single-handedly addressed all of the monstrous administration that went together with getting SANHA off the ground.

It is through his tireless efforts from 1997 to this day 20 years on that the best interests of the organization in terms of finances and the constant benchmark against the original founding documents have been met. SANHA shall forever be indebted to this selfless individual who put the interests of the organization and its objectives in relation to the Muslim communities before his own.


The first Theological Director, Ml M.S. Navlahi was subsequently appointed in 1999, and his expertise paved the way for the stringent standards of the SANHA Halaal certification process, he until todays still fulfills this important postion. A council of Ulama was appointed and thus formed the Theological Committee.

Branches were established in Johannesburg and Cape Town, with the Head office being maintained in Durban and all offices were administered overall by the Executive officer.

SANHA grew from strength to strength over the years, and gained local and international recognition through its impeccable standards and professionalism. SANHA is a founding member of the World Halaal Council and has collaborative links with dozens of influential certifying bodies worldwide, SANHA promoted itself through the hosting of a world class conferences, with the very first of this being hosted by SANHA in 2005. The organization continues to this day to participate in major trade shows and conferences both locally and internationally to highlight the standards on Halaal.

As the Halaal industry has evolved, products have become more mainstream and market has become more affluent with more consumer and higher spending on value add products. Today Halaal is no longer a niche market, it is international and multi sectoral in the world economies and SANHA is amongst the forerunners of certification bodies with extremely stringent standards to bring assurance to the Muslim consumers daily.

SANHA has certainly had an impressive 20 years of existence and I am certain that it will continue in its stride of excellence for years to come.

Theological Committee ReportAll Praise be unto Allah The Most High, The Creator, Cherisher & Sustainer of the entire Universe and May His Choicest Salutations be upon the Final Messenger, the Seal of all Prophets, Muhammad sallallâhu ‘alaihi wasallam, upon his pure family, his noble Companions and upon all those who proclaim and submit to the Faith.

There are recurring themes in the life of any organisation and after 20 years at the helm of SANHA, we have become acquainted with some of the rhythms that affect this entity. We are continuously expected to deliver service excellence with a high level of integrity not only from the industry sector but more so from the consumer segment who are the object of our very formation and existence.

The area of service delivery will never be at a stage where we can rest on the laurels of our past achievements, but even if this were not the case, the scale of the rapid changes and challenges we face both at the local and global fronts would not permit that luxury.

Whilst there have been great successes we can be proud of over the two decades of our existence, the road ahead appears very challenging. There is an exigent need to develop technical expertise and skills in the food industry and ancillary sectors among our Muslim community due to the dearth that is being experienced especially post the GAC accreditation exercise we embarked on. The upskilling and development of our staff across the board is also becoming increasingly necessary to improve and maintain the service levels we’ve committed to uphold.

Whilst there is a high level of awareness among our Muslim community on the issue of Halaal and Haraam, there is also a growing indifference surfacing rapidly among the younger generation towards care and caution in making dietary choices. We need to also survey and research the trends among the millennials which will assist us in determining the course of action we need to pursue.

During the past year, SANHA celebrated its 20th anniversary. The organisation has come a long way since its inception post the deregulation of the meat industry and repeal of sanctions on South Africa. Those among us who witnessed those early years would be amazed, not only by the achievements over the period, but also by the developments and amazing transformation of this body into an organisation of global standing and repute in a short span of time.

Activity ReportAlhamdulillah, we are pleased to report a year of satisfactory performance and successful accomplishments of our targets.

Ulama LeadershipThe organisation has since its inception been guided and led by Ulama members. We believe that the very nature of the service we render requires the expert direction and guidance of Islamic Scholars. We strongly believe that Deeni oversight also lends to the integrity of the mission and provides greater assurance to the community.


To streamline our procedures and in the interest of time, Theological committee meetings have been integrated into the Executive Committee since the Ulama members serve on both organs. Accordingly, decisions and deliberations of a Shar’iy nature was discussed by the Ulama members and recorded as part of the Executive meeting deliberations.

Executive & Management BoardThe Executive Committee met on 3 occasions during the period whilst the Management Board which comprises of the Office Bearers and Office Managers met on four occasions during the period under review.

Strategic CommitteeA Strategic Committee has been established which has met on two occasions to analyse the organisational structure in an attempt review the entire make-up of the Trust and propose a way forward to the Trustees. Presently, Trustees are representatives of various member organisations. The proposal is to move away from this original arrangement and appoint individuals as life trustees. Members need to seriously reflect upon this matter and debate this issue thoroughly which will seriously alter the organisational structure of SANHA.

Annual General MeetingThe SANHA AGM 2016 was successfully held at the Hartley Road School in Durban on the occasion of its 20 year anniversary.

New CertificationA total of 330 new applications were received in the period under review, from which only 214 were awarded certification. Mainly due to the poor economic climate looming recession, 140 plants were delisted in the period.

InspectorateTo avoid increasing HR complexities faced by SANHA in terms of managing staff appointed at various plants, a decision was taken to place the responsibility on the company to employ Muslim staff, interviewed and approved by SANHA, and increase our audits to these facilities to almost a daily basis. Accordingly, an additional 3 226 inspections have been added to the Inspectorate schedule raising the total number of plants inspected for the year to 13 512. Alhamdulillah, there has been a 96% completion rate achieved in the past period which is a 3% improvement from the last period.

Appointment of New StaffNew staff appointments are continuously required due to the growth of the organisation as well as replacement of staff. Several appointments were made at all three offices in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Gauteng and Western Cape respectively. Additional vacancies are available for Ulama in both KZN and Gauteng.

Outreach ProgrammesSANHA continues to hold programmes at Masaajid, Madaaris and schools. Ulama programs were also held in Port Elizabeth, Pietermaritzburg and Durban in the recent period. These programs are very beneficial in addressing the myths and misconceptions that linger around.


Abuse of SANHA’s logoWe are witnessing an upsurge in the fraudulent use of the SANHA logo. Averages of 4-5 incidents are recorded each month. Addressing these violations is very laborious and intensive as this is a very critical and sensitive area which requires diligent and prompt attention.

Rumour MongeringOne of the many downsides of social media is the inadvertent indulgence in rumour mongering. Rumours are circulated ‘As Received’ in an attempt to absolve the sender from any blame. An effort needs to be made to educate the masses from all platforms available to avoid circulating negative information unless it is verified and confirmed to be factual.

Poultry CrisisThe recent outbreak of bird flu/avian influenza (a viral respiratory disease) which has resulted in the death or culling of thousands of birds has put tremendous strain on the poultry industry. The shortage of locally processed poultry has thus been further exacerbated by the outbreak. SANHA has been exploring possible options of imported sources to fill the vacuum.

Muslim EmpowermentCertain Muslim Businessmen are of the view that SANHA should not entertain applications from non-Muslim companies until we are sure that such certification will not affect Muslim businesses in any manner. This matter was dealt with extensively both privately as well as in the public forum. Whilst the concept is positive and noble, a Regulatory/certification body is most certainly not the vehicle for such initiative.

Gelatine ScarcityThe ban on gelatine importation from the Indo-Pak subcontinent has not yet been lifted. Efforts are ongoing to find a solution to this dilemma faced by both the food and pharmaceutical industries.

International ActivitySANHA has evolved over the years from a local certification body to one that has global recognition. This is only through the Fadh’l and Grace of Allah Ta’âlâ. We are continuously called upon to make contribution to international forums and conferences, Alhamdulillah. In the given period, SANHA has made various representations at global forums some of which are listed hereunder:

· World Halaal Council – held its 14th AGM in Japan during November last year. It was hosted by NAHA, a fairly new organisation headed by a Pakistani Food Scientist. This year’s AGM is scheduled to be held in Istanbul during the last week in October. SANHA continues to serve on the Executive Committee of this body

· JAKIM Malaysia – SANHA was invited to do a presentation on Globalisation of Halaal at the Recognised Halaal Certification Bodies Convention held in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year.

· IDCP Philippines – SANHA was given the task of presenting on the topic, “Critical Ingredients in Food & Beverages” at their convention held last month.

· University of Karachi – HEJ : SANHA conducted a workshop on Halaal for the Academics at the University who have set up a program for Halaal product testing and analysis to support the Halaal


Industry in Pakistan

· Accreditation of Halaal Certification Bodies – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) now require any Halaal product imported in to the UAE to be certified by an organisation which has been accredited in accordance with ISO standard 17065 and GSO 993 2055-1. They have implemented this requirement since July 2017. Shipments have been stopped at ports entering without the said requirement being fulfilled. Alhamdulillah, SANHA is the first organisation in Africa which has met the standard and obtained accreditation.

Fairs & ExhibitionsSANHA has in partnership with the DTI assisted various Halaal certified businesses to expand their customer base abroad. SANHA participated in several international and local trade expos during the period which are listed hereunder:

· SANHA was once again invited by SAAFFI (the South African Association of the Flavour & Fragrance Industry) to conduct a workshop titled, “WHAT IS HALAAL” for industry participants.

· The workshop covered the following subjects/topics: o Understanding Halaalo Introduction to SANHAo SANHA’s Halaal Assurance Systemo Fast Tracking your Halaal Certification

Public RelationsAs Alvin Adams, a well-known diplomat from the 1800’s, mentioned, “Public Relations is a key component of any operation in this age of instant communications and rightly inquisitive citizens”, one can imagine its pivotal and crucial relevance in this present day and age…Alhamdulillah, under the leadership of Hajee Ebrahim Lockhat, this department continues to shoulder this burdensome responsibility on behalf of the organisation. We highlight hereunder some of the PR activities for the period under review:

· E-Bulletin – Five editions of this E-publication were circulated via email in the period

· Flash News – This digital publication focuses on current matters/news. Nine blasts were circulated in the period


· Musjid Times - Nine posters were issued and distributed along with the monthly Hilaal notices circulated by JUSA Hilaal Committee.

· Halaal Gazettes – Only two issues of this print publication was circulated nationally.

· Trade Directory – Alhamdulillah, this publication has been welcomed by the Department of Trade and Industry and is mainly distributed at trade fairs and exhibitions. An excellent initiative to promote and market Halaal certified establishments to the local and international trade circles.

· Radio Programmes – The SANHA Helpline members continue to conduct the weekly Q & A programme hosted by Radio Islam each week. SANHA is also called upon by other radio stations viz. Al-Ansaar, Radio 786 and Cii from time to time to address burning issues.

· Social Media – The Twitter, Facebook and Instagram following has been encouraging. There has been some challenges faced with the WhatsApp broadcasts which we hope will be resolved soonest.

· Media Response – This department also responds to calls from the print and other media to present our view on various matters pertaining to Halaal.

ConclusionWe offer gratitude and praise to Allah Ta’âlâ for having granted us the taufeeq and opportunity to serve in this important and vital area of Halaal consumption and diet. We beseech His Forgiveness for our many shortcomings, inadequacies and inequities, which as humans, we are prone to.

In closing, it is appropriate that we thank the staff and leadership of SANHA for their hard work and for the excellent performance that has resulted from that effort, as well as the Executive and Management members for their guidance and oversight.

We also look forward to the ongoing du’âs and support of our Seniors, fellow Colleagues and the broader Ummah which will inshâAllah be our fuel to propel the organisation to ever-greater achievements.

Treasurer’s ReportAll praise be to Allah Ta^Ala who has afforded us the opportunity to serve the deen of Islam. As trustees and officials of the organisation we have an added responsibility to fulfil this “Amanat” with integrity and dedication

We would like to present the South African National Halaal Authority set of accounts for the financial year ending 28 February 2017. These accounts which are audited by our auditors are included with the Annual Report.

Against a backdrop of very difficult economic times in our country, we are pleased to report that, through careful control of costs, consultations and financial management, we have ended the year with a positive balance. Whilst some of that surplus is committed to cover costs in the 2018-2019 financial year, we have been able to build on the results of last year and have continued to rebuild the operating reserves necessary to ensure the financial stability and security of the organisation.

Our income for the year was approximately R22,000,000 which was derived mainly from service fees. This income is an increase of approximately ten percent on last year’s income and continues the trend for year-on-year increase.

Our expenditure for the year was in the region R21,000,000. The majority of this expenditure was towards staffing costs and travel related expenses. Other significant costs include office expenditure and other running costs. A significant amount of resources was spent on the Gulf Accreditation for export of SANHA certified products to the Gulf States. This included upskilling and training which enhanced the value of SANHA personnel.

Full details of both the income and expenditure can be found in the financials. Whilst significant effort was made during the year to implement restructuring and to enhance performance in the market and financial management, the Trustees of SANHA have appointed a strategic committee to charter a way forward for the organisational structure. One of the mandates was to establish a Finance Committee.

This financial management is essential to the long term stability and security of the organisation. In summary, we are pleased to report a successful year with the financial position of the organisation.

Our Esteemed Guest SpeakerḤadhrat Shaykh Mawlānā Sulaiman Choksī Ṣāheb

Brief Biography of Ḥadhrat Shaykh Mawlānā Sulaiman Choksī Ṣāheb (may Allāh preserve him).

Ḥadhrat Shaykh Mawlānā hails from the village of Kāvī in the district of Bharuch, Gujarat, India. He was born on the 7th of April 1953 in a humble setting and surrounded by simplicity.

Education

He enrolled as a young lad at Jāmi’ah Islāmiyya in Dhabel, where he studied for a consecutive 13 years.

He also memorized the Glorious Qur’ān at the tender age of 14, under the tutelage of Ḥāfidh Aḥmad

Gorā Ṣāheb (may Allāh’s mercy be upon him). He was blessed by the Almighty with an amazing memory, hence he never took down any notes from his teachers in class, yet excelled his peers in exams, thus attaining distinction and first position for the entire duration of his studies. Upon his graduation, one of his teachers remarked, this exemplary student has the distinct ability to teach "Hidāyah" as of today. That is certainly no mean feat.

Teachers

Amongst his senior asātidhah (teachers and professors) are Ḥadhrat Mawlānā Muḥammed Ayūb Ᾱzamī (may Allāh’s mercy be upon him) who was the Shaykhul Ḥadīth at that time and the direct disciple of the intellectual and spiritual giant, Allāmah Anwar Shah Khasmīrī (may Allāh’s mercy be upon him). His other teachers include; Muftī Aḥmed Khanpurī (may Allāh preserve him), Mawlānā Rashīd Aḥmed Kayāt Ṣāheb (may Allāh’s mercy be upon him), Mawlānā Abrār Aḥmed Dulyāwī (may Allāh’s mercy be upon him) and Mawlānā Ebrahim Patnī Ṣāheb (may Allāh’s mercy be upon him).

Post-Graduation and Teaching Career

After graduating from Jāmi’ah Islāmiyya in Dhabel in 1976, he was rightfully appointed as a teacher at the very same institute by his teachers. During his service for 15 years at the renowned seminary as an Ustādh (teacher), he was now invited to travel to South Africa as there was a need for a competent, seasoned teacher at Dārul Uloom Zakariyya. He arrived in July 1990 and continues to selflessly serve the institution in the capacity of a senior lecturer. He teaches a host of kitābs (text books and manuals), ranging from Jalālayn Sharīf, to Muslim Sharīf, Hidāyah, and many other books.

His lessons are known to be riveting, practical, in-depth and captivating. His students and disciples are spread out in different continents of the world. Amongst his many distinguished students are, Muftī ‘Abdul Qayyum Ṣāheb (deputy Muftī of Dhabel), Muftī Ebrahim Desai (founder of askimaam.org), Qārī Rashid Ahmed Dhabelia (teacher of Ḥadīth at Darul Uloom Zakariyya), and Mawlānā Sulaiman Moola (renowned international orator)


Personality

Mawlānā Sulaiman Choksi Ṣāheb is known for his devoutness, taqwa (piety), simplicity, humbleness and knowledge.

Family

Almighty Allāh has blessed Mawlānā Ṣāheb with five children, all of whom are ‘Ulama and Ᾱalimāt (religious scholars).

Conclusion

Ḥadhrat Mawlānā Ṣāheb is a known icon for the Islamic sciences. He continues to benefit countless people on a micro and macro level. He also travels to various parts of the world conducting programmes and inspiring the masses with his knowledge and wisdom. May Allah preserve the Shaykh and allow us all to maximise benefit from his knowledge and mentorship.
