What a Year!2020 has not been the year we all expected and our first and most important point we wish to make is to say a huge THANK YOU to you, our customers both old and new, who have supported us throughout. You have embraced our new way of working with our ‘drive through’ and ‘honk for plonk’ campaigns, joined us online for virtual tastings, sampled many of our mixed case offers and encouraged us with your great feed-back.
What this year has taught us… like many of you, we have changed our outlook and have adapted to be able to work in this ‘new normal’. None of us could have foreseen a year in which John and Sarah would be doing live Zoom tastings to over 400 households in 4 different countries and the dogs would become head of marketing!
One thing which has not changed is that vines are still growing, grapes are still being produced and people are still enjoying wine. In South Africa

Quiet night in with 400 online wine friends
they banned it; in the USA, Trump heavily taxed it; and in the UK, we were deemed ‘essential’, so we just needed to work out how we sold it!
This year we have embraced the importance of shopping local (we cannot thank you enough) and wholly recognised the significance of the partners we work with. Last year those of you who attended our ‘Big Tasting’ met Laura from Ferghettina and Valentina from Prà, both from the Lombardy region of Italy, and Conrado who lives in Madrid. These places were hit hard and hit
early in the COVID lockdown. For us, this year more than ever, we have supported the real people in the wine industry, the people we call our ‘Wine Friends’.

Vintage, quality, price… John hit the nail on the head with this one. He loves the not overly heavy, almost delicate style with aromas of wild berry fruit, plum, aromatic cedar and tobacco leaf alongside complex savoury flavours which keep giving to the fruit-filled finish. A stunning vintage which will last for a few years and improve annually - if you can keep it.
Molinillo Malbec 2019Mendoza, Argentina
Sean has jumped at the chance to champion this red beauty. Modern in style, this Malbec has bright, freshly picked blackberry fruit aromas. A juicy palate with abundant ripe berry notes and gentle spice adding an extra dimension to the fruit charged finish. It works well with many styles of food especially red meats and spicy foods – a winner for Sean and you too!
Menade Verdejo 2019Castilla y León, Spain
This wine has a certain ‘drink me’ appeal, so probably why it’s Judd’s choice! Perhaps more so because these wine-makers believe in a ‘made by nature’ approach whereby only natural yeasts and organic practices are used to create their wines as naturally as possible. Herbal aromas, ripe textural fruit and zippy acidity make for an appealing anytime wine…naturally!
Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso Prà 2017/18Veneto, Italy
Emma always demands the best and will work hard to achieve great results. This Ripasso appeals as it is produced from the best Valpolicella Riserva grapes, then the work begins, first with fermentation then it is re-passed (ripasso) over the previously pressed Amarone grapes and re-fermented with the rich leftover skins. Result? The most amazing mind-blowing wine full of elegance and purity.
Gevrey-Chambertin, Vallet Frères 2015Burgundy, France
No festive season is complete without a good Vallet. A long-time favourite and true ‘Wine Friend’ since 1983, Bernard Vallet (or Uncle Bernie) is well known for producing wines of elegance, distinction and finesse, not just famous in the Bakewell region, but all over the world. Diane picked a true classic; evocative aromas to lead you into the glass which delights with elegant flavours and a sublime silky-smooth finish.

‘La Rencontre’ loosely translated means ‘the meeting’, possibly here the meeting of tender Chardonnay grapes with the strong granite subsoil; fresh citrus notes of lemon peel, floral notes with interesting exotic undertones and a mineral clean edge. Classic Burgundy at a great price. Sarah’s choice for any meeting with friends and family this festive season.
Circumstance Sauvignon Blanc 2019Stellenbosch, South Africa
Like Helen, this Sauvignon is different to the rest. Unlike other new world Sauvignons, it has a non-aggressive appeal with an initial soft and creamy texture, crisp citrussy lemon flavours follow before bracing mineral notes to finish. Tabalí Barranco Viognier 2018Rio Hurtado Andes Mountains, Chile
Big round of applause for Tabalí for this one. They found a plot of land high in the Andes 1600m above sea level, which only received water from snow melt and decided to plant a vineyard. There aren’t enough words to describe this wine, but we can say it’s elegant and creamy, with light floral aromas and bags of freshness. Limited stock so share only with those truly worth it!

Oregon’s Willamette Valley is a developing wine region to be followed and a land of discovery. Heavily influenced by Burgundian styles, lovers of the French region will certainly enjoy exploring these wines. Aromas of pomegranate and raspberry flow through to the palate which has a light touch of nutmeg and cinnamon. Elegantly textured with seamlessly integrated silky-smooth tannins.
Willamette Chardonnay Adelsheim 2017/18Oregon, USA
A wine region not on many peoples radar however this blew John away earlier this year. Oregon enjoys a slightly cooler climate than its Californian neighbour lending a wonderfully elegant freshness to the wine. This Chardonnay is no exception. Bright with crisp acidity, flecks of lime and apple dance with the pure mineral notes for balanced welcoming wine.
Circumstance Merlot 2016Stellenbosch, South Africa
Waterkloof’s ability to express their unique terroir improves with each vintage and this is no exception. A fine wine of complexity and great purity with dense black cassis and bramble fruit aromas combined with plums, spice, and a little creamy oak on the palate. Showing true character and personality, it’s hard to find a better Merlot for a great fruit filled glass for Christmas.

Highly commended in Decanter Magazine, this rosé rated higher than many top Provence rosés and rightly so. Delightfully pale-coloured pink showing delicate aromas of pomegranates and raspberries with a prominent flintiness. Queirón Reserva, Ontañón 2011Rioja, Spain
Ontañón’s flagship wine, ten years in the making. High altitude vineyards, specially selected grapes and carefully controlled use of oak barrels combine to make this 2011 vintage something special. When we tasted this, we were blown away with the level of precision in the wine making.Rioja has just moved to another level!
Ontañón Rioja Reserva 2010Rioja, Spain
This 2010 vintage is magnificent now – soft, subtle and mature. Made from mostly Tempranillo with added native Graciano which is the key for helping this Rioja age so ‘grace’fully. Bramble fruit notes are still evident on the nose and palate with more mature elements developing within a gentle toasty background. This must be the best value Rioja going.
Mi Lugar Vino de Quel, Ontañón 2017Rioja, Spain
Selecting the best fruit in high altitude vineyards and from Bodegas Ontañón’s new winery in the centre of Quel, has produced one of the newest Rioja classifications, ‘Vino de Pueblo’, which can only be produced from family-owned vineyards within a named village. This highly anticipated release doesn’t disappoint. Ripe black fruit, mocha, fig, and balsamic aromas before a generously complex palate of more fruit, seamlessly integrated oak, and good acidity. Simply wow!
Chablis Vieilles Vignes Domaine de la Motte 2017Chablis, France
For us it isn’t Christmas until we’ve opened the Chablis - a simple little drop of self-indulgence, La Motte Chablis never disappoints. From 40-year-old vines, deliciously precise expression of classic chalky Chablis terroir, richly fruity with a lovely flinty crisp finish, why wouldn’t you?

Long-time French classic, Sancerre is all about elegance and finesse. This Sancerre gives you that and so much more. Crisp grapefruit and lime flavours with a gentle herbaceous element to add complexity with mouth-watering, saline minerality to the long finish. Simple brilliance. Now organic too!
Bolgheri San Fiorenzo 2017Toscana, Italy
Bolgheri wines are different to usual Tuscan Sangiovese based wines. Here, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, from the best vineyards near the Tuscan coast, carefully fermented before 12 months in French Oak. The resulting rich and structured wine has layers of bramble fruits and black cherries, savoury and delicious with firm tannins and a sour cherry twist of acidity to finish.

When we picked this wine, we pictured the village outside Sienna where we tasted it with the winemaker. An amazing wine then and still is today. Plush with generous fruit and a traditional style and structure to suit the richness of the meat and enough acidity to tame the olives and tomatoes of a rustic Italian lamb dish. Perfetto!
Auxey-Duresses Vallet Frères 2015Burgundy, France
This awesome Burgundy oozing rich, buttery, hazelnut flavours is the only opulent choice for your turkey this year. The salty pancetta and flavoursome herby garlic will only highlight the complexity of the wines’ mineral edge for a sumptuous treat. Thank you, Vallet Frères!

The softness of this 100% Merlot from Lussac will balance well with the rich port sauce and still be simple enough to encourage the flavours from the pheasant. This wine shows how versatile Bordeaux wines can be. We will be having a bottle or two of this after we have closed for Christmas.
Gran Reserva Riesling Novas 2019Bio Bio, Chile
New World Riesling is dramatically different to its European counterpart. Quietly complex with lime notes combining with steely minerality and gentle honeysuckle flora. The off-dry palate contrasts with the natural salinity to lend lovely balance. Such vibrant flavours with a green citrus finish harmonise perfectly with the punchy aromatic flavours of a Thai curry.
