When Ellen Percival co-founded Calgary’s Child Magazine in 1994 with her friend, the late Sherry Kerr, they distributed the publication by hand from the back of a their family cars. Back then it was a labour of love, but as Calgary’s parents embraced this much-needed free resource, it quickly became one of the city’s greatest publishing success stories. Today, the magazine is read bimonthly by 150,000 Albertans who find it in hundreds of locations on stands and online.

Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Ellen Percival’s talent for keeping the magazine relevant and timely has maintained its popularity from generation to generation.

Her editorial sixth sense is also the reason her advertisers consider Calgary’s Child Magazine a consistently worthwhile investment, and Percival a wise and generous collaborator.

Thanks to Percival’s commitment to forming pos-itive partnerships with local organizations, the Calgary’s Child brand has become more than a

magazine — it’s an engine for community building, recognized as a Community Partner by the City of Calgary and a Promise Builder Partner by Alberta’s Promise with the Government of Alberta. Over the past 25 years, Percival has sponsored a range of popular family events with organizations from the Calgary Zoo and TELUS Spark to the Calgary Police Service. For more than 20 years, she has reached her audience with regular parenting segments on Global Calgary News.

Percival has always found ways to share her suc-cess with the community. Calgary’s Child Magazine has also supported hundreds of organizations over the years, especially those that support children and families with limited means, through donated ad-vertising, PR opportunities, editorial space, sponsor-ship and fundraising support. Percival also shares her time and expertise to champion the magazine industry and has served as an AMPA director since 2017. Put simply, she cares. She engages with those around her and the issues that matter to our indus-try and enthusiastically shares her experience and passion by mentoring novice publishers. Calgary’s Child Magazine remains a labour of love — and an example of the enormous positive impact a talent-ed publisher can have on her community.

As the Editor-in-Chief of FreeFall magazine, Maylor fills its pages with the work of local artists, but her idea of “support” goes far beyond this role.

For years, Micheline Maylor has actively sought out the city’s most talented artists—especially those who are undiscovered or stalled—and offers them the kind of mentorship, encouragement and connection that nurtures lasting careers.

Maylor has donated hundreds of hours to this proj-ect of supporting artists, creating, hosting and pre-senting at events that highlight the importance of Canadian art. She has volunteered with established Calgary literary events including Wordfest and the Spoken Word Festival to connect the general public with literary arts; formed collaborations with authors and magazine industry members; supported inde-pendent bookstores by choosing them as venues

for FreeFall launches two times a year; adjudicated several literary awards; and worked to connect established artists with up-and-comers.

A respected poet, editor and creative writing teach-er, Maylor regularly puts her own creative work on hold to help others achieve their literary dreams. Meanwhile, she oversees all aspects of FreeFall along with a team of volunteers, from editorial and design to layout, production, distribution and finances.

Under Maylor’s direction, FreeFall has grown from an in-house newsletter of community writing into a nationally recognized literary journal with sub-missions from around the world. More importantly, Maylor’s generosity with her time and talent has made FreeFall a space where writers can grow, gain confidence and thrive.

For the Winter 2019 issue of Wider Horizons, Leth-bridge College’s community magazine, Editor Lisa Kozleski suggested something risky: instead of the upbeat stories the magazine normally focused on, they would take a deep dive into the region’s opioid crisis. It was a tonal shift that could have hurt the publication, but thanks to Kozleski’s vision, compas-sion and leadership, the issue was a triumph, setting a new precedent for the kind of storytelling Wider Horizons could do.

Kozleski is known for this blend of curiosity and determination. Since joining the magazine as a senior writer in 2013, she has applied herself to explor-ing new editorial possibilities, forged an extraordinary net-work of creative talent and gathered an armload of writing and publishing awards.

She’s equally comfortable (and successful) contributing to a rebranding project or finding the magazine a better, more cost-effective distribution model.

To get Wider Horizons in readers’ hands three times a year, Kozleski oversees everything from deter-mining the story lineup to assigning stories, pho-tography and illustration. She writes features, edits everything, manages the entire Lethbridge College communications budget (famously bringing in her 2018 – 2019 budget for postage, printing and pro-fessional fees with only a miniscule 0.5% variance), collaborates with the alumni office, distributes and promotes the magazine, surveys readers and keeps bringing new ideas to the table — often sketching raw layouts and concepts on her office whiteboard.

Kozleski’s knack for finding and writing stories that capture the energy of Lethbridge College, support-ing the institution’s goals without shying away from complex subject matter, has made the magazine a must-read for an audience that extends beyond the alumni community. Given Kozleski’s reputation as an endless source of fresh ideas, it’s safe to assume she’s just getting started.
