Welcome to BBC Young Musician 2020There have been many memorable Grand Finals in this competition’s long history and last year’s Grand Final, marking its 40th anniversary, was no exception. The audience at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall enjoyed a very special concert with Lauren Zhang taking the title for her performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto no.2 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mark Wigglesworth. Fellow finalists Maxim Calver (cello) and Robert Burton (saxophone) also shone in repertoire by Tchaikovsky and Paul Creston.

This year the series will once again be broadcast on BBC television, beginning with coverage of the Category Finals on BBC Four in March. The search for the next BBC Young Musician will reach its conclusion on 10 May 2020 when three musicians will perform a full concerto with a professional orchestra at the Grand Final.

BBC Young Jazz Musician will also return in 2020 and applications will open later this year.

It’s clear from a glance at the list of BBC Young Musician alumni that this has always been a competition that has the ability to launch a seriously impressive career. Alison Balsom, Nicola Benedetti, Natalie Clein, Michael Collins, Colin Currie, Nicholas Daniel, Benjamin Grosvenor, Stephen Hough, Freddy Kempf, Jennifer Pike and Paul Watkins all did well here. More recently there has been the the stunning success of cellist

Welcome

Sheku Kanneh-Mason, winner in 2016. Saxophonist Jess Gillam appeared at the Last Night of the Proms last year and has released her first recording, as have horn player Ben Goldscheider (finalist 2016), pianist Martin James Bartlett (winner 2014) and cellist Laura van der Heijden (winner 2012). Laura was voted BBC Music Magazine’s Newcomer of the Year for 2019.

To win BBC Young Musician isn’t easy. In 2018 more than 450 musicians entered and this year’s winner will need to excel in five competitive rounds over several months. But everyone has a chance to be heard – we audition anyone eligible who applies, and everyone can receive feedback from the judges.

For us, it’s wonderful to hear so much inspiring music-making, all around the country. We look forward to welcoming a new group of talented performers as we start our search for BBC Young Musician 2020.

Pianist Lauren Zhang was 16 and in the middle of her GCSEs when she found herself at the BBC Young Musician 2018 Grand Final . She had only entered for the experience and that experience ended up including a gripping performance of Prokofiev's Piano Concerto no.2 at Symphony Hall in Birmingham . “It was fantastic!” she says . “I learned a lot about what you have to take into consideration when playing this concerto and I am so grateful to have been able to work with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra . It was an honour to work with Mark Wigglesworth too; he navigated us through the piece so insightfully.”

It’s a pretty daunting experience for a teenager, and with a lot at stake, but Lauren flourished in front of the cameras and the audience in the hall . “I was happy with my performance and was overjoyed to have played this great concerto. I felt in the zone while I was playing and really enjoyed it. Since Max and Rob were also incredible I tried not to think about my chances of winning .”

2018 Winner's Story

(cello) and Robert Burton (saxophone) . Lauren thinks that it’s the relationship between the musicians that gives BBC Young Musician its unique atmosphere. “It was overwhelmingly friendly, which I think is really integral to the supportiveness of the competition as a whole. Of course, everyone was there to compete, but there was always mutual respect for what everyone else had accomplished which made for a welcoming atmosphere .”

According to Lauren, BBC Young Musician is an experience worth having, with or without the prize money and the big career boost that the winner enjoys. “Everyone gains performance experience, and feedback from the jury that is definitely useful. There was also something to learn from listening to everyone else’s playing which again is an integral part of the competition for me.” And her advice for those wondering whether to enter in 2019? “Go for it! There’s nothing to lose and you can improve and make new friends along the way .”

Lauren will return to BBC Young Musician in 2020 to perform at the Grand Final on 10 May .
