Hello 4‐H Families!
Now that we are into 2020, you can start thinking more about what you would like to all get involved with. What do you want to participate in? What would you like to learn? There are many different opportunities available to you at your club, county, state and even national levels!
As you take the time to read through this newsletter, think about how all of these different opportunities will be able to help better yourself, and what will bring you closer to your goals. We currently have all program dates set for the spring, which you will find on the calendar. Some upcoming events that you should definitely look into are the 4‐H Speaking Contest, YQCA, Pinewood Derby, Interviews, State Youth Conference, and so many more!

4‐H LEADERS COUNCIL
LEADER COUNCIL BOARD MEETING
The next meet of the Calumet County 4‐H Leaders Council Board of Directors is scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, at 7:00 pm in Room #017. We will discuss the 4‐H Dance, plan final details for the Pinewood Derby, discuss planning the new budget, and receive updates on other county programming.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE NOVEMBER LEADERS BOARD MEETING
Discussed upcoming elections, scheduled the semi‐annual audit, started planning Festival of Fun for October, and talked about the drop off locations for Operation Christmas Child.
LEADERS COUNCIL BOARD ELECTIONS
Elections are schedule to take place at the 4‐H Leaders Council Annual Meeting on Wednesday, April 15, at 7:00 pm. This year we are looking to elect three new adult leaders and three youth leaders. Adult leaders are elected for a three‐year term, while youth leaders are elected for a one‐year term. The purpose of the council is:
To assist the county Extension Office in planning, implementing, and evaluating the year’s 4‐H Youth Development Program.
To bring up for discussion problems and ideas of the community 4‐H clubs and their leaders.
To arrange for project education and leadership development training.
To further in all ways the 4‐H Development program in Calumet County.
To accept funds for the advancement of the 4‐H development program, educational activities, and awards.
Calumet County 4‐H Leaders Council follows the Wisconsin 4‐H Policies. Anyone who would like to learn more is encouraged to attend the next Leaders Council meeting on Wednesday, February 19. ATTENTION CLOVERBUD LEADERS
There are now three years of amazing Wisconsin Cloverbud Learning Activities available for you to use! Each year has nine activities that were developed or adapted by Wisconsin 4‐H educators. Check them out at https://fyi.extension.wisc.edu/wi4hcloverbuds/activity‐plans/. After clicking the “Unlock Activities” button, and completing a short survey, you can access these fabulous resources. Each lesson also has an accompanying family letter – a letter that can be provided to parents so they can extend the learning at home – available in both English and Spanish.

WI 4‐H TOWN HALL MEETINGS
Starting in 2020, Wisconsin 4‐H will be hosting quarterly Town Hall meetings where volunteers and staff can join to hear updates from the State Leadership Team and learn about things going on in the program. Town Hall meetings are hosted via Zoom. It is recommended that you join Zoom via a computer or smart phone by downloading the Zoom application. You will be able to see key visuals if you connect via Zoom. Otherwise you can dial by phone with the unique meeting ID for each Town Hall meeting. Each Town Hall meeting will be recorded for later viewing and will be archived in a Google Drive folder. The dates are April 14, July 14, and October 6 from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. We will be having a viewing party here at Calumet County and have reserved room #017 for anyone who is interested listening in and participating. As we get closer to the dates, we will send out the agenda and the information to join the meeting by computer or phone. PROJECT MEETING LEADERS NEEDED!
Adult and youth volunteers are a vital part of our program, and their talents are needed! As part of 4‐H, we emphasize that youth will receive hands‐on learning opportunities, and we need to deliver to help keep our program vibrant and growing. If you have a talent and are willing to share, we’d like to start a countywide project meeting calendar. Project meetings can be held when and where it works best for you, such as after school at the library; on the weekend at your workshop, etc. If you are willing to share your talent with members, please call Carlea at 920‐849‐1450 x1 and share your ideas.
4‐H HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS
The Wisconsin 4‐H office is currently accepting applications for the National Hall of Fame. We have an annual opportunity to nominate individuals from Wisconsin for recognition in the National 4‐H Hall of Fame sponsored by NAE4‐HA, in cooperation with National 4‐H Council and 4‐H National Headquarters for the Class of 2020. Please reach out the Extension Office to receive a copy of the nomination form or if you have any questions regarding the Hall of Fame nominations.
VOLUNTEER IN PREPARATION TRAINING
We have dates scheduled for volunteers and leaders needing to go through VIP (Volunteers in Preparation) training, so they are able to complete their requirements for 4HOnline. They are as follows: Wednesday, January 29; Tuesday, February 18; and Thursday, March 19 The training on all three dates will be 6:00‐8:00 pm in Room #017 of the Calumet County Courthouse. If you need to go through the most updated VIP training, please sign up for one of the three trainings with the Extension Office.

Looking ahead, we have scheduled several Counselor Trainings. We are adding a third Camp Counselor Training session since they are so popular! And we would love to see more adult participation as well. • Camp Counselor Training Session 1:

Saturday & Sunday, May 2‐3 All youth on our camp staff need to attend one of these trainings. Adult volunteers attending camp are encouraged to attend as well.

If there are any pictures taken at club meetings, socials, field trips, project meetings, etc. please email them to the Extension Office. We would like to gather more pictures throughout the year to use for marketing, at the recognition event, and to share with our County Extension Committee that we meet with on a monthly basis. 4‐H DANCE
Friday, February 7
The 4‐H Dance Committee is planning a great time at Cobblestone Creek in Brillion. Tickets are available to sell through your 4‐H club. Ask a friend to join you for a night of music and fun!
Host clubs are Busy Beavers, Chilton Tip Top, and Darboy Ever Alert. Additional dance tickets are available from the 4‐H Office.
Please return dance ticket stubs, unsold tickets, and money to the Extension Office by Friday, January 31.
SILENT AUCTION ITEMS NEEDED
Have you been working on getting donations for the upcoming silent auction at the annual 4‐H Dance to be held on Friday, February 7, at Cobblestone Creek in Brillion? We are looking for all kinds of donations. If you are crafty, we would love your donations of homemade items. Don't forget about items that appeal to our younger members who seem to have a great time bidding on items as well! As always, thank you in advance for your support.
Popular items from past years included baskets of grocery items, family game or movie nights, as well as small things like stuffed animals, cars/tractors, and jewelry. (A reminder, donations that include alcohol are not allowed.)

Silent auction items can be delivered to the Courthouse (by January 31), or at the 4‐H Dance on February 7. 4‐H LIBRARY – CHECK IT OUT!
The 4‐H library of all 4‐H member and leader literature is available during regular office hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00‐4:30 pm) at the 4‐H Office. The Chilton, Brillion, and New Holstein Public Libraries have also received copies of the 4‐H publications. Check them out!
SPEAKING CONTEST
The 2020 4‐H Speaking Contest will take place on Tuesday, February 25, at 6:00 pm at the Calumet County Courthouse. The Speaking Contest is an annual event that promotes communication and allows youth to feel comfortable speaking in public. This is a county fair event, so please remember to add this to your county fair entry form to receive your premium. Cloverbud project members will each receive a participation ribbon and feedback. Participants in 3rd grade and older will be competitively evaluated on their presentations. Youth who wish to participate need to register by Wednesday, February 12, by filling out the online form (https://tinyurl.com/4‐HSpeakingContest) or contacting the 4‐H Office. Participants need to contact the Extension Office if they are not able to attend after registering.
Categories include: (participants can only enter ONE of the following categories): • Traditional Speech • Interpretive Poetry or Prose
• Traditional Speech – Pick a topic of your choice and write an original, factual speech about it. This could be about a 4‐H project you love or a current issue you are concerned about. Your speech could inform, persuade, or motivate your audience. Your entire speech or an outline of your speech can be put on note cards for use during your presentation, or it may be memorized. You may also use visuals (posters, charts, diagrams, power point) to help you deliver your speech, but NOT props or costumes. (Keep in mind, this is a speech, not a demonstration.)
• Interpretive Presentation – A memorized introduction should be included to credit the author. The options include: prose reading (such as a story or essay), poetry reading, a memorized piece, storytelling (where the story is told and not read), or an interpretive speech (a speech that had originally been written and presented by someone else). You may edit your selection to meet the time requirement. Original poetry or stories can also be used. If reading the selection, text should be mounted on construction paper instead of reading from a book. You should write an introduction and any transitions that are needed if you have more than one piece. NO props or costumes are permitted. Grade categories: (participants are asked to be respectful of and stick to the time limits) • Grades K‐2 (2‐4 minutes) • Grades 3‐5 (2‐4 minutes) • Grades 6‐8 (5‐7 minutes) • Grades 9+ (5‐7 minutes)

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief organization. Their mission is to provide children around the world with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies.
They ship these simple gifts outside the United States to children affected by war, poverty, natural disasters, famine, and disease. As a 4‐H community we pledge “to help our country and our world.” So the Leaders Council wants to challenge you to collect supplies related to the theme each month. Towards the end of the year we will be hosting a packing party where we will use the supplies that the 4‐H clubs collect to see how many boxes we can send. Here are the items that we will be collecting each month. Please keep in mind all items must be small enough to fit inside of a shoe box:
January ‐ hats, gloves & scarves
February ‐ accessories (hair ties, sunglasses, watches, necklaces, etc.)
March ‐ art & crafts and games (crayons, markers, coloring books, deck of cards, etc.)
April ‐ stuffed animals
May ‐ hygiene items (bar soap, floss, comb, brush, lip balm, nail kit, etc.)
June ‐ toys (jump rope, doll, toy truck)
July ‐ girl items (Barbie, sewing kit, hair accessories, kitchen items, apparel, etc.)
August ‐ school supplies (no liquid items like glue)
September ‐ boy items (LED flashlight, tools, toy trucks, apparel, etc.)
October ‐ monetary donations ‐ these donations will be used to ship the boxes, along with purchasing any additional supplies that we may need to fill the boxes.
November ‐ Packaging party ‐ TBD ‐ Everyone who collected items throughout 2020 is invited to attend the county packaging party.
If you have been collecting items for Operation Christmas Child, you may drop them off at the Extension Office or at any State Bank of Chilton locations. There may be opportunities for us to work with local businesses and organizations to help us collect items or to act as a drop‐off location to help collect items. MALE CAMP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We are still looking for interested male volunteers to help us take youth to Upham Woods this Summer Camp 2020 scheduled for Tuesday, July 7‐ Saturday, July 11. We follow a 10:1 ratio for campers, so in return we are in need of more youth and adult male volunteers who would like to assist in providing an awesome camp experience to local 4‐H members and youth from the community. The more volunteers we have, the more youth we are able to take to Upham Woods. SAVE THE DATE! 2020 4‐H SUMMER CAMP!!!!
Outagamie and Calumet County 4‐H Summer Camp is scheduled for Tuesday, July 7, through Saturday, July 11, 2020. For youth in grades 3‐6, camp is held at Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center in the Wisconsin Dells. For youth in grades 7‐8, Outpost Camp is held at Mirror Lake State Park, also in the Dells. Camper registration opens in March.

Session 4: August 9‐12, 2020 (4‐Day Camp) Express Yourself Open Enrollment Camps offer youth more opportunities to attend summer camp at Upham Woods. It is open to 4‐H and non‐4‐H youth from every county! Campers in grades 3‐6 are encouraged to attend; some campers even come to more than one session! Camp Upham Woods is also looking for youth counselors, aged 14‐18, to help make these open enrollment camps a success. This is an opportunity for youth leaders to hone their skills as a counselor while giving them a chance to interact with campers from all over the state. Adult volunteers are needed too. UPCOMING EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
PINEWOOD DERBY – CARS STILL AVAILABLE!
A popular event for our 4‐H program last year is returning and it is open to all 4‐H members (Cloverbuds thru 13th grade), adults, and even non 4‐H members! Invite your friends to join you. What is a pinewood derby? It is a racing event where you build your own car from kits containing a block of pine, plastic wheels, and metal axles. The Leaders Council will purchase the kits for our 4‐H members to participate! If an adult or non 4‐H participant would like to compete as well, they would need to pay $4.00 for their kit. Blocks can be whittled with a hand knife, bandsaw, or Dremel carving tool for major shaping. Decals can be bought to decorate your car, or you are encouraged to use your imagination to paint and decorate the way you’d like! On Friday, March 6, 6:00 pm, at Trinity Lutheran School in Brillion, we will host a practice night to come and test your car on the track so improvements can be made. The final event will take place on Sunday, March 8, 1:00 pm, at Trinity Lutheran School in Brillion. Multiple awards per division will be awarded, including fastest car, most fuel efficient car, and people’s choice best decorated car! Additional kits are still available – contact the 4‐H Office to reserve yours.
WISCONSIN 4‐H & YOUTH CONFERENCE
Attention Youth Grades 7‐10, a great experience awaits you! The Wisconsin 4‐H & Youth Conference is a three and a half day Statewide Educational Experience held June 22‐25, 2020. Youth from all over Wisconsin go to Madison for educational seminars, assemblies, speakers, exploration, and fun on the UW‐Madison campus! During your time there, you will stay in the dorms and eat at the college cafeterias, attend seminars of your choice, tour landmarks in Madison such as Camp Randall and the State Capitol, participate in community service activities and make new friends. Youth choose different seminars on subjects that interest you. They may be in careers, STEM topics, water sports on Lake Mendota, and more. See the sampling listed below.

Leadership seminars like Unleash Your Inner Leader and Keeping Up with Cloverbuds
Healthy living seminars such as water sports with Hoofers, Yoga, and Run Smart, Live Smart!
Art seminars with the Art Team and gardening specialists!
And a variety of other seminars that you will love to learn from! If this experience interests you, please fill out the scholarship application and return it to the 4‐H Office by March 2. A group interview will take place on Tuesday, March 17, at 6:00 pm at the Courthouse in Chilton. Applications which are due March 2 can be found on the “Things to Do” page on the 4‐H website https://calumet.extension.wisc.edu/4‐h‐youth‐development/things‐to‐do‐in‐4‐h/. The cost of this experience is approximately $250, with the Leader’s Council providing a $125 scholarship for those attending for the first time and $50 for those attending a second time. This fee covers meals, lodging, a t‐shirt, and most seminar fees. (Some seminars like the water sports have an additional cost. Transportation is provided to and from the conference, for an additional fee.)
WISCONSIN KEY AWARD
This award is the top honor a 4‐H member can achieve in 4‐H in Wisconsin. Two awards can be given this year in Calumet County. Also, the key award winners will have the opportunity to be a recipient of the Cheri Sattler Memorial Scholarship. Qualifications: at least 14 years old on January 1, 2020, and completed at least three years of 4‐H and one year of youth leadership. Interviews for the Key Awards will be on Tuesday, March 17, at 6:00 pm. Applications are available on the “Things to Do in 4‐H page” of our website: https://calumet.extension.wisc.edu/4‐h‐youth‐development/things‐to‐do‐in‐4‐h/, and are due back to the Extension Office by Monday, March 2.

LOOKING FOR LIDS
As Calumet and Outagamie Counties are planning for Summer Camp 2020 at Upham Woods, we are in needs of some supplies to help with our art & crafts project that we will be having campers make. This year we will be making dream catchers and to help the costs of supplies we are looking to collect canning jar lids, along with lids from plastic containers such as ice cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc. Please bring any lids you are willing to donate to the Extension Office located in room #024‐A of the courthouse basement.
FESTIVAL OF FUN PRESENTERS NEEDED!
Do you remember Festival of Fun? FOF is Calumet County’s project days, which hasn’t taken place since winter of 2016. We have recently started the planning process in the hopes of having the next Festival of Fun take place in October. STEM CHALLENGES FOR FUN
Did you know that one of our neighboring counties, Brown County, has developed their own 4‐H Tech Change Makers Program? Together with Microsoft and National 4‐H, the 4‐H Tech Change Makers are a group of local high school aged youth that have been charged with solving some community needs utilizing technology. The group will launch regular challenges on the website and hope youth will complete them regularly. If an adult completes a survey about how the challenge went, participant groups will be entered into drawings for prizes! Make your plans to participate in the 4‐H Demonstration Contest. This can be a great deal of fun and a fantastic way to improve your presentation and speaking skills. If your club has members doing demonstrations, it often doesn’t take much more effort to “spiff” that presentation up for the Demonstration Contest. Ask your leader or an older member in your club to help you. Grade divisions and time limits are listed. Time limits include set‐up and take‐down time. Please plan your total demonstration to stay within the time limits.

1. Subjects can range from project
work to hobbies. Anything you can both show and tell.

AG IN THE CLASSROOM ESSAY CONTEST
A writing contest for youth in grades 4 and 5 is being sponsored by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau.
This year’s topic is “How has Wisconsin Agriculture affected Your Life Today?
Essays must be handwritten in ink or be computer generated. They must be single‐sided and fit on one sheet of paper.
The essay must be between 100 to 300 words in length.

WI 4‐H FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation will award more than $15,000 in scholarships to outstanding Wisconsin students pursuing higher education in 2020. To be considered for financial support, applications must be received by the Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation via email by Monday, March 16, 2020, 5:00 pm. Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation scholarships are awarded to students based on demonstrated personal growth, development and leadership, academic performance and future educational goals. To be eligible for Wisconsin 4‐H Foundation scholarships students must have been a Wisconsin 4‐H member for at least three years; have a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and be enrolled or planning to enroll at a university, college or technical school during the 2020‐2021 academic school year. Scholarship winners from previous years are not eligible to receive a second 4‐H Foundation scholarship. How to apply and more information is available at: http://wis4hfoundation.org/scholarships. The Calumet County Fair is in search of individuals age 18 and over interested in the position of the 2020 Fairest of the Fair and individuals 11‐13 interested in the position of 2020 Junior Fairest of the Fair. Duties of the Fairest and Junior Fairest of the Fair include being the official hostess and junior hostess of the Calumet County Fair. As interns of the fair, they will represent and promote the fair at local parades, festivals, speaking engagements, and promotional events. Duties during the fair vary, but include greeting fair visitors, announcing entertainment, and rewarding exhibitors. Candidates will be evaluated on professionalism, community involvement, speaking ability, and overall enthusiasm and ability to promote the Calumet County Fair. This is a unique opportunity to get inside and see how the fair works and functions. Candidates must submit an application by March 15, 2020. Details regarding the date of the selection have not been finalized at this time. Updates will be available on Calumet County Fair Facebook page. HORSE PROJECT
The next HORSE Project meeting is Thursday, February 13, at the Hilbert Community Center starting at 7:00 pm, lasting about 90 minutes.
At our February meeting, we will be talking about professions related to horses and the equine world.
Meetings are open to all active 4‐H members in any county (many activities are suitable for Cloverbuds), including Horseless Horse and Horse, and others who are interested in horses. So, drop on in and bring a friend.
Our January meeting was about horse colors. We also added to our fair project books and discussed our club project. Looking forward, in March we will be having a parents vs kids (alumni are encouraged to join us) hippology contest.

YQCA (YOUTH FOR THE QUALITY CARE OF ANIMALS) CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
YQCA was created for youth in the beef, dairy, goat, poultry, rabbit,
sheep, and swine projects. This program gives families more flexibility in acquiring this much‐needed information that trains youth in improving the care of food animals and promoting a higher level of consumer food safety. Calumet County will offer two instructor led opportunities to be certified through YQCA. These programs are scheduled for February 20 and February 26 from 6:00‐7:30 pm. We will break into two groups for each session, one group for youth ages 8‐11 and one group for ages 12‐18. Whether you complete the online modules or participate in the instructor‐led program, you must register online.
Upon completion of courses, an identification number will be provided to you and you must carry it with you and show proof at any/all contests in which you will participate. What is the cost?
$12/person/year (paid online) for the online modules that are different each year. College students or members ages 19‐21 will need to complete the online modules.
$3/person/year (paid online) for the in‐person trainings (The Calumet County 4‐H Leaders Council will provide coupon codes to pay for your registration if you attend the in‐person training. Coupon codes will be distributed in early February.)

If you are an FFA member or other organization affiliate, please sign in through the independent system on the right. Upon signing up for a course, you will then pay for that course with a credit card or coupon code. Please email [email protected] for any assistance you need in creating or signing up in the YQCA system. Remember, Wisconsin State Fair and other national exhibitions will require certification in YQCA for participation for 2020 events and beyond. This will be the case for ALL ANIMAL EXHIBITORS at the Wisconsin State Fair including dairy, goats, rabbits, poultry, beef, sheep and swine! Meat Animal Carcass Evaluation

Gary Onan will help you understand what the ultrasound scanner measures and why it is important. He will be covering the basics of traditional carcass evaluation as done in a meat cooler. He will then relate that to the use of ultrasound measurements on live animals and how we can use those to accomplish the same result as the cooler show.
Rabbit & Poultry Project Meeting

All rabbit and poultry project members who plan to exhibit at the 2020 Calumet County Fair should be attending this meeting! We will cover fair wrap up and talk about market and show animals and everything in between.
YOUTH SWINE PROJECT SCHOLARSHIP
Each spring, Wisconsin Pork Association offers youth pig project scholarships to assist youth with their 4‐H or FFA pig projects. The program encourages youth to become involved in the Wisconsin pork industry, provides opportunities to develop life skills, and exposes youth to the many career paths available within the industry.
4‐H and FFA youth are eligible to apply for a $50.00 scholarship used to offset costs associated with their 2020 pig project. Scholarships will be awarded in three age divisions, as follows: Ages 9‐12, 13‐15, and 16‐19 (as of January 1, 2020). Thanks to support from pig breeders throughout the state, a minimum of thirty $50.00 scholarships will be awarded this spring. WI STATE 4‐H LIVESTOCK QUIZ BOWL AND 4‐H SKILLATHON
Do you show market animals at the fair or are involved in a 4‐H livestock project area? Would you be interested in participating in a Livestock Quiz Bowl or Skillathon contest? We are interested in putting together a team for Calumet County. WI State 4‐H Livestock Quiz Bowl and 4‐H Skillathon contests scheduled for March 7, 2020 (Madison) The 4‐H Livestock Quiz Bowl and State 4‐H Skillathon contests will be held together on Saturday March 7, 2020, at UW Madison Animal Sciences Building, Madison, WI. Deadline for registration is February 21, 2020, 5:00 pm. Livestock Bowl is a quiz competition where all the questions are about beef, sheep, swine, and meat goat topics and students use a buzzer in order to answer the questions. Teams compete in a double elimination format by giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Each match has both an individual and toss‐up question round. The winning 4‐H senior team will represent Wisconsin at the National 4‐H Livestock Quiz Bowl competition in Louisville, KY at the North American International Livestock Exposition. Skillathon contest is made up of a written quiz and learning stations such as breed identification, feed identification, equipment identification as well as some team activities such as demonstrating evaluation skills. PET FIRST AID /CPR
The pet first aid/CPR course will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020, from 10:00 am ‐ 12:00 noon at the Community Center, 1725 Silver Moon Lane, New Holstein (by the soccer fields and swimming pool). This event is limited, so please pre‐register by emailing Trisha Flanigan ([email protected]) with the 4‐H member’s name and age. Please leave your pets at home, but bring a four‐legged stuffed animal along with you. If you do not have one, we will have a couple extras for you to borrow during class.
DROP IN DOG TRAINING
The future dates for the drop in trainings at the Sheboygan dog training club, for current members that have participated in training last summer are February 21, March 27, and April 24. We will start with showmanship from 6:00‐6:30 pm. obedience from 6:30‐7:15 pm. and rally from 7:15‐8:00 pm. For additional information, contact Trisha Flanigan at [email protected].
