    TOTAL Transemirates Classic RallyInternational Dragon Boat Festival: 3 & 4 April 2009

    Feel theT OTAL Transemirates Classic Rally 2009 proved to be an excellent opportunity for spectators in UAE to view over 40 classic cars. Around 140 participants drove through all the emirates, covering a distance of 800 kilometers. The classic cars that participated included prestigious vintage models of Porsche, Jaguar, Cadillac and many more from the 1930 to 1975 era.TOTAL Transemirates Classic Rally 2009 was held under the patronage of Mohammed Bin Sulayem, President of the UAE Automobile & Touring Club.

    The rally commenced in Dubai before moving to Sharjah, Ajman, Al Hamrah, Khasab, Fujairah, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and ended back in Dubai.TOTAL has extensive experience in rally and motor sport competition, having enjoyed many world championship victories in Formula 1 and WRC, thus proving the technology and the high performances of its products.     I n the follow up to last years inaugural event, the Dubai International Dragon Boat Festival took place for the second time at Festival Marina on Friday, 3rd April and Saturday, 4th April 2009. This year, hundreds of participants took part and they were cheered on by thousands of spectators.The event is organized by Dragon Boat Alive and Festival Centre and sponsored by TOTAL Lubricants Middle East with support of the Intercontinental Dubai Festival City and Four Seasons Golf Club, in association with Island Global Yachting (IGY).

    in Dubai:On 11th April 2009, at the

    F1 Road Show the pilots of Renault

    performed on a purpose-built platform

    by the lake near to Burj Dubai. A

    specially designed TOTAL lounge was

    created on the terrace of The Address

    Hotel that offered a full view of the show

    area where TOTAL hosted over 40 VIP

    guests. These guests all had special

    access to F1 garage and paddocks

    to observe F1 engineers at work. Two

    guests also had the chance to realize

    Megane Drive on the platform during the

    show. Nelson Piquet, Romain Grosjean

    and Adam Khan also visited TOTAL

    Lounge, posed for pictures with guests

    and signed souvenirs.

    Following the F1 Road Show brought

    by Renault F1 Team to Dubai on 10th

    and 11th April 10th 2009, a Renault

    F1 shooting was organized at the TOTAL

    lubricants blending unit, Dubai. The F1

    car was driven by Nelson Piquet and was

    followed by the Renault F1 Technical

    Team.Several shoots were performe

    d in

    different parts of the plant including the

    tanks farm, the warehouse, the bulk

    loading bays and the grease production

    unit. During the shoot, Nelson Piquet

    also signed collectors cans and

    drums for TOTAL and ELF. It was also a

    memorable day for the teams of TME

    FZE who actively took part in this event.

    C ould you please give us an overview of RAD International Road Construction?Earlier, we were a young team with

    potential and specialization in road works. Unfortunately, our previous company ended up being bankrupt and it was around 2003 I decided to establish a new company.

    Owing to the nature of road works at that time, we initially started operations in Dubai as Road Subcontractors. After this, our first major project was constructing 3.1 kms road works in two phases. This project was for the duration of 60 days at HFZA, Phase 1.

    There was official tendering for this project, called Inner Harbour Road works and all experienced road contractors based in Sharjah were invited. We completed the project a day before the deadline. Because of our capabilities and swift conclusion, HFZA showed their appreciation by giving us a new road works project 3.4 kms, the Modern Road Works in HFZA, Phase 1. These two projects were responsible in laying down the foundations for RAD International Road Construction.

    Soon after, we acquired a positive reputation within the construction and road works industry. Since then, we have completed numerous projects for Dubai Municipality, JAFZA, Emaar and Nakheel from 2004 to 2008. Additionally, we

    are listed in RTA as one of the top 10 professional and qualified road contractors.

    We are presently involved in 10 kms road works in HFZA for Phase 2, and owing to our successful track record, we have been awarded an additional 20 kms road works project with approximately 300% more value. We are proud to disclose that this has been completed and it has been handed over five months prior to the scheduled deadline.

    How has the global downturn affected your business?

    As we are involved in local services and our activity falls in infrastructural and road works, any adverse impact to our business was felt later compared to other activities like trading. Fortunately, our greatest advantage during the crisis is our client and the Sharjah Government who are constantly developing sound programmes and initiatives. Furthermore, good management practices together with counsel from qualified advisors have ensured that the crisis has had no negative impact. Another important reason is our firm belief of planning well in advance to weather any crisis.

    Despite the construction slowdown, RAD International decided to establish an asphalt factory. How is this financially viable for you?

    As mentioned above and due to nature of our projects in HFZA, we decided to establish our own asphalt factory because we knew for at least one year our requirements were enough to provide us with a reason to establish an asphalt factory. Moreover, we knew and believed the nature of infrastructure related to road works will not be completely halted as there is always a requirement of these regardless of the prevailing economic situation.

    Why was HFZA chosen as the location for the factory?

    HFZA's beneficial location in the part of Northern Emirates is bound to lead to future developments concentrated in this area. HFZA has also provided us good facilities and very good opportunities.

    I would like to stress here that one of the main reasons we owe our success to is because of Dr. Rashid Al Leem. We are enduring grateful for his constant cooperation and advice. A key element of our accomplishment is RAD Internationals trust of Dr Al Leem in our capabilities and potential. His wise counsel and leadership in planning programmes for us is highly appreciated. We believe RAD International would not have achieved such monumental progress without his vision and guidance in his capacity as Director General of HFZA.

    Zone works in favour of entrepreneurs with flexible long-term rental lease agreements, a spate of tax exemptions and rent holidays. The HFZA management has also taken the initiative of negotiating agreements with several local and international banks to provide corporate and individual credit facilities to assist SMEs in fast-tracking their business set-up.

    At the Petrochemical Zone, investors have access to pre-built warehouses, factories and office units for lease. Other incentives include advanced infrastructural facilities and telecommunication links as well as abundant and inexpensive energy.

    The location of the Hamriyah SME Zone itself is massively advantageous. The UAE emirate of Sharjah straddles the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean with a unique link that functions as a trade corridor providing enterprises with an unparallel logistical advantage. There is also the added benefit of close proximity to the Sharjah International Airport. Moreover, the Hamriyah Port boasts a 14 meters deep water harbour and Sharjahs Khalid Port and Khorfakkan Port are both within easy reach, being a short distance away.
