Content of Process & Plant Design II Project Report
Sem II 2011/2012
MAIN CHAPTER SUBTOPICS
Chapter 1
Introduction
1.1 History and Background
1.2 Application of Products
1.3 Market Survey
1.4 Screening of Synthesis Route (With concrete justification, e.g.
availability of raw materials, comment on equipment purchase
and/or operating cost, effectiveness/efficiency of selected process.)
1.5Site Selection & Plant Layout
Chapter 2
Process Synthesis andFlow Sheeting
2.1 Process Flow Diagram (* Students cannot follow exactly patented
plant for their project. They need their own creativity to come out
with modification of existing plant. They can use the selectedprocess from Chapter 1 only as a guideline)
2.2 Manual Material and Energy Balance (in this part, students must
state clearly what is the assumption that they use and where all
the physical properties/correlation originated from. Numbered
clearly each process streams and show results for all streams)
2.3 Comparison of simulation and manual results; as a rough
guideline, error between them preferably should be less than
10%. In the case ofLARGE ERROR, students need to justify.
Chapter 3
Utilities
This chapter should describe details on the types of utilities used for
the proposed plant, total requirements (hot and cold) and also
preliminary design of the utilities sources (eq: boiler, cooling tower,
etc).
Chapter 4
Equipment Sizing
An equipment sizing should be done for all equipment involved in the
process. Students have to state the method they are using and give a
rough dimension of the equipment. For example Reactor: Material of
construction, Height, Diameter, Impeller power & diameter. Thisinformation is deemed to be sufficient.
Notes: Detail calculation either in Doc or Excel format should be
attached in Appendix.
Chapter 5
Process Safety Studies
Must submitcomplete P&ID for the whole plant printed in A3 paper.
(Student can use Visio to draw the diagram). On top of that, this
chapter should cover control and safety aspects of MAJOR
equipments only.
5.1 Introduction5.2 Identification of hazard
8/2/2019 Content of PD II
2/2
5.3 Control of hazard analysis
- DOW Fire, Explosion index, Toxicity5.4 Major equipment control
5.5 Major equipment HAZOP
Chapter 6
Waste Management
3.1 Introduction (Student have to identify the type, amount and
sources of the waste)
3.2 waste/ waste water treatment system (How/Strategy of
handling to comply with standard. State how much the cost if need
disposal)
Chapter 7
Economic Analysis
6.1 Introduction
6.2 Grass-roof Capital
6.3 Fixed and Total Capital Investment Cost
6.4 Manufacturing cost and total production cost
6.5 Cash Flow Analysis
6.6 Conclusion
Notes: Equipment cost estimation can be done via a standard method
available in Engineering Economics or Perry Handbook. Student must
state clearly the year of their index based on. FYI, the index is
different for every year. Its the duty of students to find out the latest
index (its some sort like rate/conversion index).
Chapter 8 Conclusions
and Recommendations
An overview of all chapters in the body of text and recommend
further steps that can be taken to improve the design.
