ROCKS TAKES LISTED BADENIA CHASE

GREEN ROCKS, trained by Greg Wroblewski in the Czech Republic, was a comfortable winner of the Listed Badenia Steeplechase in Mannheim on Sunday. Sent off an 82:10 chance on the local tote, the Red Rocks gelding, who at five was the youngest of the seven runners in the race, pulled clear of his rivals in the closing stages under Bulgarian jockey Sertash Ferhanov to claim the 15,000 Euro Listed contest by 14 lengths from odds on favourite Kazzio, with long time leader Cro Easy back in third.

The race was responsible for what may be not one but TWO world records. The Cornelia Schmock-trained Supervisor, who was pulled up during the 4200 metre contest, was running in the race for the NINTH successive time, whilst trainer Greg Wroblewski was winning the race for the second time, however it is thought that the 27 year gap, having won the race back in 1990 with Trajan, might well be a record for a Pattern race.

Anglo German Racing’s very own Darren Thrussell was at Mannheim on Sunday in his usual role as co-presenter at the raceday, however he also found time to take

some photos, a selection of which can be found in the next couple of pages.

MANNHEIM ROUND-UP

Elsewhere on the Mannheim card, jockey MAXIM PECHEUR secured a double thanks to the Horst Rudolph-trained OLKARIA, winner of the Class 4 Preis vom Dentalstudio Busenbender handicap, and TEDDILEE, who landed the big flat race of the day, the 9,400 Euro Preis von Jungheinrich, a class 2 handicap. Making her first racecourse appearance since finishing a disappointing last of eleven at Magdeburg back in October, the Markus Klug-trained Teddilee held on in a terrific finish to win by a neck from Redesert under Marco Casamento, with the Philipp Berg-trained Rock Academy a short head away in third. It was a raceday to remember for jockey KERSTIN ELSAESSER (photo right), who rode the Marco Klein-trained IGNAZ to victory in only her second ever race ride. Showing a composure that belied her lack of experience, the rider gave Ignaz an excellent ride in the Class 4 Preis der Privatbrauerei Eichbaum against much more experienced jockeys, the pair coming home ¾ length clear of the Matthias Schwinn-trained Christin, with French import Born to be Alive back in third. One horse that looked sure to be going in plenty of notebooks was the Monsun filly AZITA photo below), who made the journey down from trainer Jean Pierre Carvalho’s stables in Cologne. Having finished second to subsequent Italian Oaks winner Nepal on her debut, Azita, who disappointed when only eighth at Nancy in France last month, was back to form at Mannheim when romping home unchallenged in the Preis der ALBERS Wettbörse under jockey TOMMASO SCARDINO for a five length victory over the Horst Rudolph-trained Southern Comfort.

MUNICH: STATES STATES CASE FOR DERBY WITH BAVARIAN WIN

The Andreas Wöhler-trained WARRING STATES got the better of a titanic struggle with Enjoy Vijay in the Group 3 Bavarian Classic at Munich on Monday, regarded as one of the main trails for the German Derby. The Japanese-bred colt, one of three horses in the race for his trainer, got home by a nose under English jockey Harry Bentley from the Peter Schiergen-trained Enjoy Vijay, with the Markus Klug-trained pair of Kastano and Northsea Star third and fourth respectively.

SECRET SET FOR GERLING GLORY

Eight high class runners line up for the Group 2 Gerling Preis at Cologne on Sunday, with last year’s German Derby second and third SAVOIR VIVRE and DSCHINGIS SECRET renewing rivalry here. However, with Savoir Vivre carrying a 1 kilo penalty here, DSCHINGIS SECRET, who was only a neck behind his rival in the German Derby, could be the one to beat here. Aside from a disappointing run when only ninth in last year’s Grosser Preis von Baden, Markus Klug’s colt was in fine form last season, rounding off the year with victory in the Italian St. Leger, and could get revenge here.

KASHMAR has developed into a decent handicapper, and handled the step up in class when landing a Listed race at Berlin-Hoppegarten last time out, however this hot contact may be beyond both him and BRISANTO, who hasn’t won since his two year old days.

SIRIUS was second in this race last year and could go well again here along with the consistent KASALLA, a fine third in last September’s Grosser Preis von Europa over Sunday’s course and distance.

PREDICTION: DSCHINGIS SECRET-

SAVOIR VIVRE -

SIRIUS - KASALLA

SPANISH RIDER TAKES DÜSSELDORF FEGENTRI RACE

PABLO LABORDE took the lead in this year’s Longines Fegentri Gentlemen’s World Amateur Championships after winning the latest round of the series at Düsseldorf in Germany on Sunday aboard the Birgit Lenz-trained JOGI’S BOY.

The 18 year old Spaniard showed a calm maturity beyond his teenage years despite the pair at one stage being around twelve lengths behind early leaders Mon Petit Fleur and Kevin Woodburn. However, as that pair tired in the home straight, Laborde produced Jogi’s Boy with a perfectly time run to take the 2200 metre contest from American Dreamer under Italian rider Andrea Besana with French non-nominated rider Guilain Bertrand coming home third on Belgian raider Boccaccina despite the saddle slipping in the home straight.

FEGENTRI CHAMPION IN BIG RACE VICTORY

Defending Fegentri Jump Racing Champion GONZAGUE COTTREAU landed one of the world’s most famous steeplechases when partnering the Gerry Brewster-trained DERWIN’S PROSPECTOR to victory in the Maryland Hunt Cup in the United States on Saturday, regarded as the top timber race in the world, and in doing so becoming the first ever French jockey to win the race.

However, the race was full of incident, with only two of the ten starters completing the four mile race over 22 tricky timber obstacles. Despite the lack of finishers, the spectators at the Worthington Valley course were treated to an exciting spectacle with Derwin’s Prospector and Cottreau just getting the better of Drift Society under English rider Hadden Frost in a terrific finish.

KRASNODAR SET FOR JUMPS RETURN

Saturday marks a landmark day in the history of Krasnodar racecourse, as the Russian track re-introduces jumps racing for the first time in many years. A hurdle race, run over 1800 metres, has attracted a field of five Russian-bred runners, none of which have, unsurprisingly, any jumps form. However, the race, which will be the last on the ten race card, looks to be a competitive affair with some very interesting runners.

GASHA returns to racing for the first time since 2013, and although unconfirmed, it is understood that the seven year old has returned to racing after an unsuccessful time as a broodmare. However, despite having competed at Group 1 level in her heyday, the four year absence from racing looks to be too much to overcome.

The unexposed five year old grey KLASSIC LI and four year old filly FERTIKA both look evenly matched, and could well fight out the places here, whilst GARDIAN is nicely bred, having Northern Dancer lines on both his sire’s sand dam’s side, however has failed to live up to that, remaining winless in six runs so far.

However, the four year filly ILOIDA looks to be the one to beat here. Winner of two of her six starts, Iloida was last seen when runner up in a conditions race at Rostov, and with three Group placed horses finishing behind her that day, Iloida looks set to write her name in history and take the first of what is hoped to be many jumps races at Krasnodar in the new era.

PREDICTION: ILOIDA - KLASSIC LI - FERTIKA

QUEEN TO REIGN IN CZECH GUINEAS

FASHION QUEEN makes the journey from German trainer Claudia Barsig’s stables in Dresden to Prague on Sunday for the Czech 1000 Guineas.

Winner of a Listed race at Hannover last time out, Fashion Queen, who will be ridden on Sunday by Rene Piechulek, will face nine Czech-trained rivals, the best of whom looks to be the Dalibor Torok-trained POLYANTA, unbeaten in both her races to date including victory in the Rudolf Deyla Memorial, regarded as the main 1000 Guineas trial in the Czech Republic. Polyanta won that race by an impressive 4½ lengths, with CHICA QUERIA (second), COFFOLA (third) KATARINA (fifth) and JOHANKA (sixth) all in opposition again on Sunday. However, the Tomas Vana-trained SASA should not be discounted, having won in fine style at Karlovy Vary last time in a decent field, whilst LIKE A TRINITY returns to her homeland after racing exclusively in France this season.

PREDICTION: FASHION QUEEN - POLYANTA -

SASA - LIKE A TRINITY
