Most people are familiar with the Nike swoosh. But many may not be familiar with the that fact it’s a Greek goddess that gives the company it’s name.

The Greek pronunciation is actually Knee-Kay. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory.

In the bible, in the new testament, the word NIKE is used exactly one time….in this verse…

1 John 5:4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the VICTORY that has overcome the world, even our faith.

NIKE is the noun form of the word.

The verb form of the word (NIKAO) is used here:

"And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death. Revelation 12:11

The enhanced form of the verb (hupernikao) is used here:

But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.

Romans 8:37

What about agony or better said, the root AGON. How is that used in the bible?

Look at Paul’s word to Timothy:

Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12

Both Agon and Agonizomai are used there.

Another form of the word is used here:

Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.

Jude 1:3
