A month has gone by already, with a few meetings under our belts but no doubt many more to come. It's been great getting to know the Centre and its key people, particularly Linda & John. We are extremely lucky to be able to employ people like Linda & John, with such dedication to our Centre. If you don't know either Linda or John, please make sure you make your-self known and say hello next time your at the Centre when they are. Similarly it's important that you get to know your new committee. We plan to put mini 'pro-files' in the next newsletter so you can at least get an idea of who we are (in case you don't know). Still debating whether we put photos in or not!!

I'm looking forward to our first meeting next week, where I hope we can encourage more members to come along and participate. We are putting in place several procedures, which I hope will reduce the length of the monthly meetings to no more than about 2 hours. Linda will be circulating weekly reports/updates to the committee on items that require some form of action or decision. If the decision or action required is fairly straight forward, then we can decide as a commit-tee (given the majority are in agreeance) so that the required action can take place and not have to wait until a monthly meeting. The background and subse-quent decision will be recorded at the following meet-ing so everyone remains aware of what is going on. Ideally the meetings become more of an information session for members, with the chance for feedback and/or contributions by members. Of course if the majority of the committee believes a matter requires further discussion, with member input required at a meeting - then that's what will be done, and the matter will become an agenda item for the next meeting.

The new committee has many ideas on how we can develop and improve the Centre, so our aim is to harness and drive this new enthusiasm that only a new committee can bring to an association or club like ours.

AWEC calendarFrom the president

Of course the short term will involve various members getting to know the club, their new role and generally trying to 'get the house in order'. So bear with us in this settling in period.

We seem to have lots going on at the centre, with plenty more coming up as we head towards Spring. For those that attended the first session of the Winter Show Jumping series, run by the newly formed AWEC Jump Club - I hope you had a great day. It seemed well attended with more than 50 riders, and the morning certainly left us in no doubt it was a 'Winter' series! Some may have even noticed your new President make a rather ungraceful dismount on the first jump in the 75cm class (if you weren't watching, the sound of crashing rails and wings would certainly have grabbed your attention!!). Yes, I crashed and burned - but walked away with my pride being the main injury. More prac-tice required in that field I'd say - or perhaps I'll turn my efforts to dressage instead. Anyway, all in the name of 'having a go' and getting to know some new people along the way.

I look forward to seeing you at future meetings or events, and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any feed back or comments to make (by email is my preference!).

Regards

Bradley HaydenAWEA [email protected]

Boggy situation

The committee of the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre would like to express its gratitude for the way Hutcheon & Pearce came to our rescue during a recent altercation with deep mud.

Community support is vitally important for the continuation of any sporting or recreational club and Hutcheon & Pearce has shown this quality in abun-dance.

Showjumping club

AWEC one jump ahead The Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre is literally jumping with activity this winter. The first round of the Winter Series jumping competition was held on Saturday 18 July in perfect conditions on the Cen-tre's large sand arena. Nearly 70 horses, with mostly junior riders, enjoyed the courses designed by multi-skilled Jump Club secretary, organiser and competitor Jess Bertram from Chiltern. Penny Gormley and Marita Alexander from Albury judged the three competitons and presided over the multitudes of Freshman's rounds, specifically designed to encourage our younger and less experi-enced riders. Club members would like to thank the volunteers who helped run the competition - such as Craig Bertram on the BBQ, our announcer Steve Fulton, and jill-of-many-talents, Wendy Kimpton. The Jump Club could really do with a few new helpers - so even if you don't know one end of a horse from the other there are plenty of little jobs you can do which make for a successful competi-tion. Things like the catering, the raffle tickets, the paperwork for entries etc.

Three new AWEC members signed up on the day, and we'd love to see you at the working bees which we keep as short as possible the day prior to com-petition.

A reminder everyone that the finals are on Saturday 22 August.

Please contact Jess Bertram on [email protected] or 0357261187 if you'd like to be involved in the AWEC Jump Club or could lend a hand at one of the upcoming events.

75cm Junior 1st Eliza Fisher – Kahuna Prince (Browns Plains)

75cm Senior1st Christine Staats – Patrick (Ebden)

90cm Junior1st Ryan Smith – Amedeo (Barnawartha)

105cm Junior1st Grayd’n Stones – Ellasondra (Gooramadda)

105cm Senior1st Linden Milham – Anabanana (Albury)

All these winners have in recent times benefitted from the tuition and advice of Sydney-based specialist jumping coach Jenny Sheppard who visits AWEC regularly. Nearly 30 riders attended Jenny's most recent jumping training clinic held at AWEC last week-end, and her next Albury clinic will be held indoors on 29/30 August.

Well-known pony club jumping instructor Alan Mitch-ell also ran a training clinic at AWEC last weekend, organised by the ARC for those perhaps less intrepid riders.
