Gospel Meditation “Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod.” Large Jewish communities existed in most major cities of the ancient Mediterranean world, after the collapse of their kingdoms chronicled in the Old Testament, and Joseph could likely find work as a carpenter. All the same, today’s Gospel reminds us that the first formational years of Jesus as a babe-in-arms were spent in a strange land. The members of the Holy Family were foreigners, outsiders, immigrants.

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. God took on our humanity. He is in solidarity with our own trials and difficulties. On the feast of the Holy Family, we honor the special place of the family within society. We are invited, too, to recall those families who share in the struggles of the Holy Family in a particular way. We pray for immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. AROUND OUR PARISHES

ST. HELENA PARISH

ST. PATRICK PARISH

FROM OUR PASTOR Home for Christmas... Being home for Christmas can entail many things—children bringing dirty laundry home, etc. If you visited with family this Christmas, you probably had a few aggravating moments alongside the happy times.

Today’s first reading says, “God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons.” Nice sounding words, but are they meaningful in today’s world?

The feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, reminds us that they too were subject to trails and sufferings. There was no room at the inn, Herod attempts to kill the child, and the flight into Egypt.

Family life is not easy in our broken world. But today’s feast day gives us

great hope. What is Christian hope? It is not blueberry pie and a mint julip (thinking of warmer days to come!) No, Christian hope is more than feeling good that everything will turn out ok. The Catechism says hope is, “placing our trust in Christ’s promises and relying not on our own strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit” (1817).

The old saying goes, “Home is where the heart is.” Is your heart in the right place? The wood of the manger leads to the wood of the Cross. But the Cross of Christ promises eternal life. Today’s reading says, “...take care of your father when he is old… kindness to a father will not be forgotten.” Our heavenly Father never forgets us. I pray that the Christmas season will fill your heart and home with the hope of eternal life!
