With only a few of the original shikumen lanes remaining, Capella Shanghai is proud to protect and evolve the city’s cultural legacy. The design concept, created by Jaya Design International, embodies the spirit of Jian Ye Li.
SHIKUMEN HOUSESSensitively restored lanes feature distinctive Western and Chinese design elements that define the shikumen architectural style. Chinese matou, or ‘horse head’ gables adorn these three-story brick and stone-accented townhouses while the interiors were conceived by the renowned Jaya Ibrahim. The bespoke interior design is a careful blend of classic Chinese elements and 19th-century French flair. ACCOMMODATION

CULINARY EXPERIENCESInternationally celebrated French chef Pierre Gagnaire debuts his first culinary concept for Mainland China in the restored shikumen estate, Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li. Gagnaire, one of the world’s most lauded chefs, has earned merits that include 16 Michelin stars and the title of "Best Chef in the World 2015” as conferred by Le Chef magazine. Since its conception, Mr. Gagnaire has personally nurtured a talented team to bring his vision to fruition through dedicated guidance and frequent visits to Shanghai.
At the heart of the cultural preservation zone of Xuhui District, the 50-seat Michelin-starred restaurant le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire is open for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner to serve Gagnaire’s signature brand of French cuisine.
In addition to le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li will host the entirety of Gagnaire’s first Mainland China venture, projected to be fully operational; le Bar, a 40-seater intimate bar lounge, la Boulangerie, an informal yet relaxed café serving homemade pastries.
