Dedication of Paul Demie Mainieri Baseball Field

Former director of athletics, baseball coach and alumnus of STU’s Sports Ad-ministration graduate program, Paul Main-ieri ’82, was honored at the March dedica-tion of the Paul De-mie Mainieri Baseball Field.

Mainieri remains the “winningest” coach in school his-tory. After his first opportunity at STU as a college head coach, he has enjoyed 30 years of coaching and is number 10 on the career wins list for all active NCAA coaches and one of only six active coaches to have won 1,000 games and an NCAA national championship. He is currently the Head Baseball Coach at LSU.

Mainieri’s gift made it possible to resurface the field. His father, Demie Mainieri, longtime baseball coach at Miami Dade College, attended the dedication ceremony, as did many of the alumni his son coached at STU.

2009Marie J. Edouard, MPS Executive Management, launched a new travel agency IMJ Travel & Services, LLC, that designs group pack-ages to connect clients to new places and people, history and culture, including pilgrimage trips that are focused on faith and spirituality.

Ricky Patel, JD, Sr. Partner at Farrell & Patel, was recently recognized by South Florida Business Journal as one of its “40 under 40” honor-ees. He and his wife Arti recently had a daughter, Maya Layla.

Schuyler Smith, JD, an associate at Lydecker Diaz, was selected by the Florida Bar Leadership Academy as part its 2013 inaugural class.

2009Leroy Smith Jr., MA Pastoral Ministries, was honored May 13, 2013 for outstanding community service by Miami Dade Commissioner Jean Monestime. He was presented with a commendation for his tireless ad-vocacy to construct bus shelters in District 2.

Calder Hynes, MS Sports Administration, is the public relations manager for the Brooklyn Nets. He recently married Lisa Nicole Gernak in Marana, AZ.

2011Hans Malebranche, MBA, Sports Administration, relocated to Hous-ton to work for Sam Houston State University athletics in the Corporate Partnerships division. He was hired by alumnus David Paitson ’82, As-sociate Athletic Director of Sam Houston State University.

Angelo Nicolosi, MSM Sports Administration, is the assistant head baseball coach at Tallahassee Community College.

in defeat. You can spend months showing a client a home and in the end they may decide not to purchase. STU sports prepared me for these situations. In tennis you win some and you lose some but you can’t let the losses defeat you nor the wins make you boastful and arrogant. In addition, I gained a sense of fair play and justice; for example, not cheating an opponent with a bad call or arguing disrespectfully with a referee. In my real es-tate career, I’ve applied these lessons by remaining morally ethi-cal and treating all people with respect.” Sabaea is the daughter of STU Tennis Coach Bruce Carrington.

Kevin Rogers ’85, Bachelors in Busi-ness Management, President of South Florida Region Seaside National Bank & Trust & member of STU President’s Board of Advisors: “Baseball at STU taught me self disci-pline. Preparing for a baseball season took many hours of extra work, self conditioning, preparation and self mo-tivation. It also taught me how to work together as a team and to accomplish a goal, something that is very important in business. There is a lot of competition in banking as we compete for the same clients. There are no entitlements in baseball or in business. The guy that works harder will win.”

Margee Martinez ’06, BBA in Sports Administration, Finan-cial Services Sales Manager at LINQ Financial Group, Inc., and member of STU School of Business Advisory Board: “My senior year they announced we will have a new head coach, so I quit the soccer team. Seeing everyone with their soccer gear hurt and I wanted to be part of the team again. Michelle (Coach

Center for Ecumenical & Interreligious StudiesThe School of Theology and Ministry has established

the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Studies. This new center will develop study programs in Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, which will complement existing courses in Catholic theology, Christian history, and Ecumenical Christian studies. The University is seek-ing to endow the Center and pro-fessorships in the various world religions. Eventually, the Center will offer a Masters and a Ph.D. in Comparative Theology.

Its mission includes aiding clergy of all religions to grow in such aras as pastoral counseling and chaplaincy. To assist local religious institutions, churches, mosques, synagogues,

Michelle Smith) said ‘You have to work harder and complete pre-season on your own in the morning before classes start and we have no money for you.’ STU soccer taught me disci-pline, how to compete, and that being on time means being five minutes early. I also learned that you dust yourself off and get back up. A sports agent once told me that if two profession-al athletes have the same athletic abilities, the only difference between the good and the great athlete is how fast they get back up. But the big-gest lesson I learned was –– don’t quit.”

Carlos Solis ’71, Bachelor of Arts, First Vice President of Bank America-Merrill Lynch and member of STU Athletics Advisory Board. Carlos played on the tennis team. “As an athlete, I learned to love com-petition and focus on winning. These attributes have served me well in succeeding in the Finance Industry.”

Koely Kempisty ’09, BA Sports Administration, Executive Assis-tant, The Legacy Agency, NYC: “I never imagined the impact that the STU soft-ball and cross country would have on my future. Teamwork means understanding the value of the person right next to you, their role on the team and providing a helping hand to achieve the goal. Learning the significance of overtime work to improve individual performances benefits the team as a whole. As a full-time student-athlete living at home with a part-time job, I learned how to prioritize, how to handle an extensive and busy schedule, and find a balance in my life. And through cross country I learned to never give into fear and to never give up; I learned how it feels to succeed when your body or mind works against you. Once you find that ability you have the ability to take over the world.”

and temples, the Center will also offer programs to educate lay peo-ple in their own religious traditions, within a context of respect for other faiths.

Rabbi Mark L. Winer, the founding director of the Center, has devoted his entire life to interreligious reconciliation. As the Presi-dent of the National Council of Synaogoues, he was a leader of Cath-olic-Jewish relations in the United States and around the world for many years. He has a Ph.D. from Yale in the Sociology of Religion and was a congregational rabbi for over 40 years. He is working with Monsignor Terence Hogan, Dean of the School of Theology and Ministry, Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, and STU President, Monsignor Franklyn Casale, to create the new center.

To learn more about the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Studies, the STU community, friends and alumni are invited to attend a session to introduce Rabbi Winer and his plans for the Center. It will take place Wednesday, November 20, during the Common Hour, noon until 1:30 pm, in Goldbloom Convocation Hall.

STU’s Sixth Annual Leadership Golf Tournament took place April 26 at Trump Doral Golf Resort & Spa. STU alumni, friends and support-ers enjoyed a fun-filled day participating on the Great White and the Red Courses. Funds raised by the Tournament support student scholar-ships and the Annual Fund.

Since joining STU as Alumni Director in April this year, Yisel Cabrera has been busy. She has met with alumni in person and on social media, organized alumni ac-tivities, and, with Lorena Hidalgo, Project Coordinator in the Office of University Ad-vancement, revamped the alumni webpage and social media channels. As a member of the University Advancement team, she is responsible for planning and implement-ing programs and projects that strategically engage alumni with the university. Serving as an ambassador, Yisel is charged with securing commitments from alumni to provide professional expertise and volunteer service and col-laborating with colleagues in the administrative offices and the schools to create and maintain pathways for alumni participation that advance the goals of the university. Before coming to STU, Yisel was Manager of Corporate Social Re-sponsibility at Burger King Corp., where she led the communications and development efforts of the Burger King McLamore Foundation. From 2006 through 2011, she worked for the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), a U.S. based non-for-profit organization in Washington, DC, culminating in the position of Interim Executive Director. She received a graduate certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Public Policy Institute at Georgetown University and a B.A. in Government and World Affairs from the University of Tampa.

Yisel can be reached at [email protected] or (305) 628-6562. Join us on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter.

The School of Law’s Graduate Program in Intercultural Human Rights was named the Law Institution of the Year at the Law-yers to Rescue 2013 Public Service Award ceremony and the program’s director, Pro-fessor Siegfried Wiessner, was honored as the Law Professor of the Year.

As one of the dynamic learning experiences for our students, the School of Business launched a Distinguished Business Lec-ture Series in 2012. The goal is to expose students to uniquely successful business leaders and to show them different models for business achievement. In April, the theme was The Multi-Generational Successful Family Business and featured Pedro Capo, COO of El Dorado Furniture; Andrew Hertz, President & GM of Miami Seaquari-um; and Carol Wyllie, Senior VP of the Graham Companies. The panel was moderated by Dean Antonio Villamil.

The 8th Annual Southeast Cell Science Undergraduate Research Symposium was held this past spring with undergraduate science students from eight regional and local universities, including Uni-versity of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and University of Miami School of Medicine. Directed by Dr. Jeffery Plunkett the sym-posium has grown from approximately 15 participants in 2006 to over 150 students in 2013 who present their research in either oral or poster format. The purpose of the symposium is to offer a one-day regionalized format for students to present their work in prepa-ration for presentation at national or international meetings or their senior thesis presentation.

Dear Alumni and Friends: The fall semester is in full swing and we are planning exciting new ventures and opportuni-ties for our students.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, 100 undergraduate science students were able to participate in the Summer Research Institute on projects on campus and in partnership with New Mexico Tech, University of Pittsburgh,

Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, and Vivant Skin Care of Miami Lakes. The School of Science’s Institute for Technology of Science has initiated a Cloud and Analytics Lab, the first of its kind in a South Florida university. It combines industry and technology, giving students unprecedented hands-on experience in ap-plying technology to specific industry challenges. Similarly, for students in all schools, we are establishing internship opportunities with local businesses and non-profits. Practical experi-ence in the workplace is of inestimable benefit to students in the class-room and when applying for work or graduate school. A new and timely venture of the School of Theology and Ministry is the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Studies, founded by an internationally-known interfaith proponent, Rabbi Mark Winer. A new member recently joined STU’s fundraising team. Ignacio “Iggy” R. Tamayo is a Major Gifts Officer who will be raising funds for the Capital Campaign, concentrating especially on the needs of Bis-cayne College. Born in Cuba, Iggy grew up in Louisiana and has a BS in Mathematics from Louisiana Tech University and a graduate certifi-cate in Management Information Systems from FIU. Thank you to all our volunteers who give so much of their time and expertise, as well as their financial support, to make this University so successful. Thank you also to all those who have contributed to last year’s Annual Fund. Regards,Beverly S. Bachrach, Vice President, University Advancement and Marketing & Communications

Dr. Jeffery Plunkett, Associate Professor of Biology, and Dr. Alexis Tapanes-Castillo, Research Assistant Professor of Biology, School of Science, recently published a review article entitled Axonal regenera-tion after spinal cord injury in zebrafish and mammals: differences, similarities, translation. The work appears in the August edition of Neuroscience Bulletin. This is the first of several articles concerning research on regeneration following spinal cord injury carried out with funds from the Department of Defense working in collaboration with the laboratory of Dr. Martin Oudega at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. This summer the Plunkett lab engaged 14 under-graduate students in research endeavors through funding provided by the Ethel and W. George Kennedy Foundation.
